  1. Mitrovic & Silva charged by the FApublished at 11:17 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, former Premier League striker Chris Sutton called for Aleksandar Mitrovic to be given a 10-match ban, but Fulham manager Marco Silva appealed for "fairness" for the Serbia striker from the Football Association.

However, the FA said on Monday that its standard punishment for Mitrovic's sending off at Manchester United was "clearly insufficient".

The 28-year-old has been charged with violent and improper conduct while Silva, who was also sent off at Old Trafford, has been charged with abusive behaviour towards match officials.

Silva will also face an improper conduct charge for allegedly throwing a water bottle in the direction of the assistant referee and the club has been given an additional charge of failing to control its players.

  3. Sevilla sack coach Sampaolipublished at 10:58 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

Sevilla have sacked coach Jorge Sampaoli with Sunday's 2-0 defeat against Getafe having left the team just two points above La Liga's bottom three.

The Argentine, 63, was previously in charge of Sevilla in 2016-17 and returned to the Andalusian club last October following the sacking of Julen Lopetegui.

Sevilla won 13 and lost 12 of their 31 matches under Sampaoli this season and have reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League - a competition they have won a record six times since 2006 - where they face Manchester United after the current international break.

A club statement said that Sevilla are "already working on recruiting a new coach as soon as possible" and wished Sampaoli "the best of luck in his future".

  4. AI chooses best-ever Man Utd XIpublished at 10:48 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

Giggs, Rooney and Beckham all miss out

An Artificial Intelligence website, external has selected Manchester United’s best-ever starting XI. With so many generations of success at the club, there are plenty of players to choose from.

Crucially, however, some big names have missed the cut – including Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and even the club’s record goal scorer, Wayne Rooney.

Instead, the AI has opted for Roy Keane and Paul Scholes in midfield, with a front four of George Best, Bobby Charlton, Cristiano Ronaldo and Eric Cantona.

Not a bad line-up, but with 253 goals in 559 appearances, Rooney may well feel aggrieved. When Giggs retired in 2014, the winger bowed out as the most decorated player in the English game, having won 13 league titles, four FA Cups and two Champions Leagues, among 34 trophies.

Here is the Man Utd XI selected in full by the AI: Schmeichel; Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Irwin; Keane, Scholes; Best, B. Charlton, Ronaldo, Cantona.

  5. Adebayor announces retirement with dig at Arsenalpublished at 10:41 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

Emmanuel Adebayor is hanging up his shooting boots.

The 39-year-old announced the news in a bizarre Instagram post, which heavily features the goal he scored against his former club, Arsenal in 2009. It was the most controversial moment of Adebayor’s career. The Togolese striker had joined City for £25m that summer, as part of an overhaul under new owners, the Abu Dhabi Group – and many fans in north London felt let down.

Adebayor subsequently scored the winner when the two sides met in September that year and decided to burn any bridges left standing by running the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the travelling Gunners.

Amidst a title race between City and Arsenal, it feels like he’s pinned his colours to the mast with this latest statement.

Alongside those two clubs, the 2008 African Footballer of The Year played for a string of other big teams in the Premier League and elsewhere, including Real Madrid, Monaco, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace.

After spells in Turkey and Paraguay, he finished his career back in his homeland at Semassi.

Adebayor wrote: “SEA, from the highs to the lows, my career as a professional athlete has been an incredible journey. Thank you to my fans for being there every step of the way. I’m feeling so grateful for everything, and excited for what’s to come!”

  6. ‘Hodgson already knows Palace’s key players’published at 10:33 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

    Alex Howell
    BBC Sport

Crystal Palace have turned to Roy Hodgson as a safe pair of hands to try to fight off the threat of relegation.

Following the sacking of Patrick Vieira, it was understood Hodgson was one of the names being considered by the Palace hierarchy and you can grasp their thinking.

After taking over at Palace in 2017, Hodgson kept the Eagles clear of relegation for the four seasons he was in charge.

However, some supporters are not keen to see the former England manager return, due to the style of football that was played towards the end of his previous spell in the Selhurst Park dugout.

There are also reservations about how his time at Watford ended following his short-term appointment last season, when he was unable to stop the Hornets being relegated from the Premier League.

Under Vieira, Palace were not conceding a lot of goals. The team's problem is at the other end of the pitch, with the Eagles struggling to put the ball in the back of the net.

The advantage of hiring Hodgson is he already knows a number of Palace's key players.

Getting Wilfried Zaha scoring again will be Hodgson's biggest target, with the Eagles' hopes of staying in the top flight heavily reliant on their talisman. Zaha is the only player in the squad who has scored regularly in the league over the past four seasons.

It could be argued that there is a lot more talent in this current Palace squad than the one Hodgson left in 2021. With players like Joachim Andersen, Marc Guehi, Cheick Doucoure, Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze, it will be interesting to see the style of football he implements as Palace look to extend their stay in the top flight to 11 seasons.

Raymond Hughes: Is it definitely that the manager's the problem at Palace tho?

Mark Burt: Not a Palace fan but can’t help feeling Roy Hodgson’s appointment on par with Turkeys voting for Christmas. But if he keeps them up, it’ll be hailed as a master stroke.

  8. Haaland withdraws from Norway squad with groin injurypublished at 10:25 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

Spain v Norway (Sat, 19:45 GMT)

    Norway

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has pulled out of the Norway squad for their opening Euro 2024 qualifiers through injury.

Haaland, 22, picked up a groin problem after scoring a hat-trick in City's 6-0 thrashing of Burnley in the FA Cup quarter-final on Saturday.

It means he will miss Norway's games against Spain and Georgia in Group A.

"Erling took it hard when he realised that he could not fight for the team," said Norway coach Stale Solbakken.

  9. 'Conte covering his own shortcomings'published at 10:20 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

While watching Conte's rant, it seemed he had been holding a lot back and could no longer do so. I felt he was covering his own shortcomings. Some of the points he raised are valid and appreciated by sections of the support - but, ultimately, Spurs have gone backwards this season. They play a style of football that is turgid and boring and I cannot think of a player he has improved.

If these players are as he describes, why keep picking them without rest or rotation?

He is an elite manager - his CV sets that out - but surely he knew what he was signing up for working under ENIC? Despite being the ninth-richest club in world football, Spurs do not operate in a way akin to Chelsea.

They have tried two 'win-now' managers in Conte and Jose Mourinho, yet they were 90 minutes away from winning the biggest trophy in club football under a project manager in Mauricio Pochettino. While the ownership remains as is, a boss in Pochettino's vein appears the more suitable option.

Conte's behaviour can also be viewed as selfish. He has attempted to protect his own reputation while throwing the players under the bus. Yes, many of them need replacing, but it is he who insists upon a style without a creative player in the squad, and a rigid formation with three at the back.

While it could be seen as a last roll of the dice to get the players motivated for the final 10 games of the season, reports are emerging that many of them want Conte gone as he crossed the line with this latest outburst. He was always going to go at the end of the season anyway, but it now feels it could be far sooner.

I've said it once and I'll say it again - replacing Vieira with Hodgson is a backwards step, and noticing more than a lazy appointment by the board who obviously don't want the club to progress. It's time for Parish to go before his reputation crumbles.

Roy Hodgson appeared to have finished his managerial career, but had not completely ruled out a return.

"But you never say never because you are going to miss it whether you are 75 or 35 and just been sacked from your first job."
