Vieira had Palace in 12th place with a points tally to match or better every comparable club in the league. They haven’t lost by more than a goal since the start of January despite a run of very tricky fixtures, with draws against Liverpool, Newcastle, Man United. Absolutely baffling, backwards move to replace Vieira with Hodgson.

Kelly Simmons will leave the Football Association after 30 years of "seminal contribution" in developing the women's game in England, says FA chief executive Mark Bullingham.

Simmons will step down from her role as the director of the women's professional game in the summer before leaving the governing body next year.

She joined the FA in 1991.

"After over 30 brilliant years at the FA, Kelly has decided that it is time for a change," Bullingham said.

"Kelly has made a seminal contribution to the FA, and the growth and development of the women's game in particular, and will leave an enduring legacy."

The King is dead, usurped by the old king - who we thought had abdicated for good.

There are four directors at Crystal Palace, but we can safely assume Steve Parish is the driving force behind the change from Patrick Vieira to Roy Hodgson.

Whether he is replacing Vieira to avoid relegation or is returning in panic to a more comfortable style, the horse has already bolted.

However, if Parish hoped for a positive reaction to a Hodgson return, he is misguided, regardless of his legacy at the club.

When Hodgson was unilaterally "retired" by Palace in 2021, the fanbase was sold a vision of “progressive" football: more passing, modern recruitment and a younger playing squad.

Vieira had embodied that change but the shine had faded. Arguably, he had been enacting a Hodgson-lite approach to stay competitive. The low block, the rigid structure and choosing workmanlike alternatives instead of someone like Eberechi Eze.

Of course, the worry was that he wouldn't be able to escape a conservative mindset when it mattered, but the club appears to be double-downing on defending.

If the main criticism of this season has been a lack of shots, having a coach willing to "throw a punch" in equal match-ups could have been a tonic to the current fear and apathy.

That may be a romantic notion to set Wilfried Zaha and Michael Olise free to attack rather than passing backwards – but the path chosen is back into the trenches.

Numbers-wise, Palace probably need nine points. Vieira may have achieved this, McCarthy the same, and Hodgson does have decades of experience.

The biggest concern is if Parish's Palace have only been playing the role of a "progressive" football club. At the first hurdle, they have retreated to the past, hoping for the same results.

Kyle West: Spent 1.5 years trying to completely change their style of play from what he was playing there, and now they’ve brought him back. Makes sense.

CPFC fans will get right behind Roy as he's well liked and a local chap but does seem a step back and the club didn't have a plan when they sacked PV.

Patrick Vieira knew his side had trouble scoring goals before he left. Palace became the first team since records began to go three games without a shot on target.

They have scored just 22 goals this season, the joint-fewest in the league. But Roy Hodgson is known better for defensive strength, and the Eagles have the second best defensive record in the bottom half, with 38 goals conceded.

Crystal Palace are going backwards while the likes of Brighton, Villa, Brentford and Fulham are on the up. Steve Parish hasn't invested in proper players for years and just gets ransoms from tin pot clubs on the cheap. This is the final straw with getting Roy out of retirement. Parish could potentially ruin his legacy now.

After Patrick Vieira's sacking on Friday, Paddy McCarthy was in charge of Crystal Palace for Sunday's 4-1 defeat at Arsenal. That was the Eagles' 13th game without a win, including their FA Cup exit against Southampton.

Just four points separate Southampton at the bottom of the Premier League and Palace in 12th place. The Eagles have 10 games left and are currently three points above third-bottom West Ham, who have two games in hand.

Their next six games are against teams below them in the table, beginning with Leicester at home on 1 April.

Micah Richards, however, also cited Conte having to deal with, external the death of friends Gian Piero Ventrone, who was the Spurs fitness coach, Gianluca Vialli and Sinisa Mihajlovic, as well as having gallbladder surgery in February.

He added: "If you look at the whole thing, what he's had to deal with in terms of injuries, the whole Harry Kane situation about whether he is going to sign a new contract or move on, your best midfielder [Rodrigo Bentancur] getting injured, Dejan Kulusevski getting injured, then the people passing around you who are good friends.

"It is going to have an effect on what you are going to say in a press conference. At the end of the day, he is a human being,.

"That news conference for me was all his emotions coming out after that game. Maybe he is at the end of his tether.

"I understand his frustration of him being a great manager and not being able to deliver what he wants to do at Spurs. I think it's a mix of everything."

  20. Is Conte 'spot on' or 'toxic now'?published at 07:58 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2023

Junior: Thank goodness, Levy has been called out! We could change managers every 18 months for the next 10 years and the outcome will be same. It requires a total overhaul of the football club from the first team down. A plan would help!

Emiliano: I think Conte's comments are spot on. This club will never change until the current owners go. To them, we are a business trying to rake in as much money as possible and happen to have a football team. The stadium was not for the team but for all the other events. It's not Conte who should go but the owners - and most of the squad, who are rubbish.

David:Conte is absolutely correct and the problem at Spurs lies at the top. Unfortunately, the truth hurts. Spurs do not have a club ethic. That is because Levy isn't interested in such a thing.

Stef: Conte needs to point the finger at himself as well. The players are obviously better than the results - losing to Sheffield United, Wolves, and drawing against Southampton. He is the one who is supposed to bring the best out of them. Instead, he's starting to sound like Mourinho, talking about past achievements and blaming everyone else.

Lee: If I was employing Conte, it would be P45 time straight after those comments. He's toxic now.

Gareth: After Conte's post-match rant, I believe that Levy has no choice but to sack him. Conte is being paid a considerable amount of money to be Spurs manager, and to publicly undermine those paying your salary is poor form. Conte knew the situation at Spurs and our problems in achieving success, which he was meant to remedy.

Mark: Conte is a disgrace - does he think his tactics are blameless? How can the players respond to him after he criticised them? And what gives Conte the right to criticise the club? What an arrogant man. He's truly overrated and he's panicking because he's got no answer.
