There were two big matches in the WSL tonight, of course.

In Melissa Phillips' first league game in charge, Brighton claimed a crucial 3-2 victory over Everton to move off the foot of the table.

Elisabeth Terland scored twice in a thrilling game in Crawley as the Seagulls jumped above Leicester and Reading, and level on points with Tottenham, to boost their survival chances.

  3. 'We've had a heavy week but we're proud tonight'published at 21:41 British Summer Time 19 April 2023

    FT: Manchester United 1-0 Arsenal

    Manchester United

Manchester United striker Alessia Russo, speaking to BBC Three:

On manager Marc Skinner's message for the run in: "Tonight we are just really proud. We have had a heavy week, coming off the internationals, to then go into the FA Cup and Arsenal tonight.

"But credit to all the players and staff, everyone was fit and healthy, and ready to go."

On the team dynamic at Man Utd:"We have such a good group of girls, there is special dynamic in the dressing room. I think it shows on nights like this that we know that when it gets tough, we all have each other's backs."

  4. 'We go into these games knowing how good we are'published at 21:39 British Summer Time 19 April 2023

    FT: Manchester United 1-0 Arsenal

    Manchester United

Manchester United matchwinner Alessia Russo speaking to BBC Three: "I'm buzzing. These are the games that mean so much. Arsenal are a top side and these games are so important to us. From now until the end of the season, every three points count, and this was a big one tonight."

On pre-match message from manager Marc Skinner: "We just wanted to go out there, be positive and show what we can do. I think often in previous years we haven't backed ourselves against the top teams. But this season we have grown so much, and we go into these games knowing how good we are."

On her matchwinning goal: "I don't really remember too much of it to be honest! Obviously when Keets [Nikita Parris] gets the ball I want to get in the box. It was a great pick out from Keets, and I seem to be always falling over when I shoot at the moment! But I'm just glad it hit the back of the net!

"Keets picks out the pull back quite often, so the ball broke quite quickly and I just thought I'd hang back, and I did long enough to get the ball [and shoot]."

As for Manchester United, their dreams of the double are still well and truly alive.

Chelsea stand in their way on both fronts. They'll face Emma Hayes' side in the FA Cup final at Wembley while the Blues are four points behind in the WSL but have two games in hand.

A massive win for United tonight but there is plenty of work still to be done for them.

I'm sure Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall will have something to say about the schedule again, especially having seen Leah Williamson go off after just 15 minutes with a potentially serious injury.

The Gunners have a Champions League semi-final at the weekend but with just 92 days until the start of the World Cup, it won't just be Arsenal fans sweating over Williamson's fitness.

    I'm disappointed.

We've got two English teams in the semi-finals of the Champions League, and the fixture schedulers whoever does them, could have helped Arsenal tonight.

This fixture did not need to be played tonight.

To have to travel away to Manchester before going away to Wolfsburg, it is disappointing for the Arsenal players.

Manchester United's players are enjoying a walk around the pitch with their fans believing it could be their season.

They still need Chelsea to drop points, but the home fans are hoping it could still be a league and cup double.

  9. 'My body was hanging on at the end'published at 21:25 British Summer Time 19 April 2023

    FT: Manchester United 1-0 Arsenal

    Manchester United

Manchester United defender Aoife Mannion, speaking to BBC Sport: "There are absolutely no words for that win. My voice has gone a little bit actually!

"Every part of my body is cramping. I'm just so glad that as a team we were able to get the result and get over the line.

"It was a game of two halves. In the first half, it felt like we could get into a rhythm then in the second half everything changed.

"To be fair to Arsenal, they put us on the back foot and at the end it felt like we were hanging on to that lead. But in the first half, we did think we deserved it.

"Those last five minutes, I can't tell you how it felt. I was just looking into everybody's eyes and saying, 'come on, let's just get this out.'

"Sometimes in football it works and today was one of those days."

On making comeback from ACL injury: "I'm so pleased. I must say that my body was hanging on towards the end but I'm delighted. I'm just really pleased."

  10. 'A massive three points'published at 21:23 British Summer Time 19 April 2023

    FT: Manchester United 1-0 Arsenal

    Fara Williams
Former England midfielder on BBC Three

Massive three points - It keeps them at the top of the table.

As players, collectively at this stage of the season, having points on the board is far more important than it is being in the chasing pack.

Four more games to go, and if they win them, they put themselves in a great position to win the title.

  11. United maintain title pushpublished at 21:21 British Summer Time 19 April 2023

    FT: Manchester United 1-0 Arsenal

    Michael Emons

Gunners goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger, unmarked for a last second corner, almost became an unlikely hero for Arsenal, but volleyed wide when the set-piece dropped to her.

"We are top of the league," is the chant from the home fans and yes they are, four points clear of reigning champions Chelsea. However, Emma Hayes' side still are the favourites for the title as they have two games in hand.

For Arsenal, it looks a tough task now as they are six points behind United, but their main focus will be on how Leah Williamson is after that serious-looking injury in the first half.

  12. 'Gritty, determined and quality performance from Utd'published at 21:18 British Summer Time 19 April 2023

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
    Ex-England goalkeeper on BBC Three

Man Utd have had the craft, you can see the well-worked build up play that has been drilled in to them by Marc Skinner and his coaching staff.

They put on a gritty, determined, but ultimately a superior-quality performance tonight.

A massive win for Manchester United but nearly the most incredible conclusion to this game.

Manuela Zinsberger was up for the corner, the initial delivery was punched in her direction by Mary Earps and she sends the volley narrowly wide!

United have done the double over Arsenal, though, and they go four points clear at the top!

Arsenal hook it back in and this time the ball is allowed to bounce before - who else? - Aoife Mannion gets it away. She's been superb on her return to the side.

United were just trying to keep the ball in the corner but Ona Batlle didn't get the memo and swings in a cross to no one.

Arsenal break and after good work from Frida Maanum, Aoife Mannion is able to stab the ball clear. Relief for United - and Batlle in particular.
