  1. Thank you and good nightpublished at 22:56 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

Throwing away a comfortable 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 thanks to a couple of own goals. Losing both of your first-choice centre-backs to injury. It has not been a great night for Manchester United. They and West Ham are both still level in their respective ties, though. All to play for next week.

That's it from us for tonight. We'll return at the weekend for more of that Premier League stuff.

Thanks for joining us. Have a good evening.

  2. 'Man Utd still miles away from the best teams in Europe'published at 22:55 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

Sevilla were dead in the first half. That's when you have to kill them.

A clever team that has won it six times will know they will get chances.

The momentum was completely gone for Man United and even at 2-1 they were unbale to stop it.

This is going to be the team for next season, more or less. It seems to me they are still miles away from the best teams in Europe.

  3. 'Martinez will be a massive miss'published at 22:53 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

Former Manchester United goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Let's hope it's not so bad, but the fact that he was stretchered away from the technical area and he was in tears, it's difficult to say what's happened but he was holding on to his ankle.

The only injury that I know from that part of your leg is the Achilles. I hope I'm wrong about that. Things can look very very bad in the moment and then in a few days it is looking up again so we have to wait. He will be a massive miss. Varane also came off injured today. Martinez and Varane has been a very good partnership and they have grown throughout the course of the season.

Harry [Maguire] has come back very strong and played well for England as well. He carries something in the public eye that makes players around him nervous. He couldn't do anything about the own goal which he will be credited with tonight.

He is the club captain so when you wear the armband, you expect some leadership as well and he didn't give that today. Varane does that all the time.

  4. Martinez injury 'not' his Achilles - Ten Hagpublished at 22:50 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    Man Utd 2-2 Sevilla

I asked Erik ten Hag whether Lisandro Martinez had injured his Achilles.

Ten Hag said 'no'. He didn't say what it is.

  5. 'Not a nice night'published at 22:49 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    FT: Man United 2-2 Sevilla

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to BT Sport, says: "We had the game in our hand. We were 2-0 up and should've scored three or four - the game was totally on us. Unlucky moments with injuries, we had to make some subs with injuries then we lost the control.

"We conceded two own goals, that's bad luck but we have to deal with it. We have to learn and have to kill the game but everything is open.

"When we didn't get the third and got some injuries we lost the rhythm in the game. We played well in the first half with a lot of belief, scored two great goals for Sabitzer and we could've scored even more, then after half time we lost control of the game.

"I know we can do better with these players in the last part of the game and we needed to be more composed, it was not a nice night."

On the injuries to Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, Ten Hag added: "We've seen Lisandro drops out after a moment where there was no opponent involved so it does not look great. I can't say [how serious it is] at this moment, the same with Rafa."

  6. 'Martinez being carried off shows lack of leadership'published at 22:45 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-2 Sevilla

    Peter Schmeichel
Former Manchester United goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Martinez gets injured and he is clearly in pain. It looks like the Sevilla players are nice carrying him off the pitch. No, they wanted him out so they could get going.

By carrying him off, it didn't stop their momentum, Man United used their five subs so they knew he wouldn't come back.

It didn't give the manager or the players the opportunity to have a conversation. Man United players should have stopped that, leave him on the pitch, let them [the physios] come on and carry him out and in that period, you regroup.

This is something the players need to do, that's a lack of leadership on the pitch. Harry Maguire should have managed that situation. When the manager sees that his player is carried off by two opposition players, he should have stopped that.

  7. 'Man Utd lacked game management'published at 22:41 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-2 Sevilla

    Peter Schmeichel
Former Manchester United goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Man United are not a top European team yet.

I was saying they needed to go for the third goal with 28 minutes played. They needed to up the tempo and get the crowd going again. That is a ability that they haven't got and it is necessary if you want to build yourself into a top European team.

Every time Man United have been successful in Europe, they have had that so that is something that ten Hag needs to add to the squad.

It was a little bit casual. Sevilla were too average in the first half and that made it too easy. Nothing is easy in top European football.

No-one gets to this point by luck or being a bad team. Any team that gets an opportunity will take it and they did. Fair dos to Sevilla.

That is my worry, the lack of ability to manage the game. We have seen this a couple of times this season. That is something that ten Hag needs to add to this team.

  8. 'Complete disaster'published at 22:35 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-2 Sevilla

More from former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes, speaking to BT Sport: "The second half was a complete disaster.

"You never felt Sevilla put loads of pressure on United. United must have felt this was going to be a stroll in the park.

"It looks like Lisandro Martínez has done his Achilles. It doesn't look great."

Since his Man Utd debut in February 2020, Bruno Fernandes is one of just two players in the big-five European leagues to register at least 50 goals (60) and 50 assists (50) across all competitions, after Lionel Messi (80G, 59A).

  10. 'Two stupid goals'published at 22:29 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-2 Sevilla

    Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer, speaking to BT Sport: "I have problems finding the right words. It was like a rollercoaster game. We had to finish the game off and at the end it's a draw and it's not what we wanted.

"We had the chances [to finish the game off]. We controlled the game but unfortunately we gave easy goals away. We cannot concede these kinds of goals and we're really disappointed now.

"In a competition like this you have to be focused until the end. The last minutes were a bit strange. Two stupid goals. That's not what we wanted. When you are 2-0 up at home you have to get it done."

  11. Postpublished at 22:25 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-2 Sevilla

This won't feel like a positive, but the draw means Man Utd remain unbeaten in their last 25 home games in all competitions, winning 21 and drawing four.

Tonight, they've also become only the second English side to score two own goals in a single match in a major European competition, after Chelsea against Erik ten Hag's Ajax in November 2019.

  12. 'Man Utd are not a top European team'published at 22:22 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-2 Sevilla

    Guillem Balague

    Football, eh?

A team that has won so much in this competition and I think we undervalued that.

Every time Sevilla have been in the quarter-finals, they have won it. If the two goals don't get deflected, it is a different game.

They just thought their chance would come, or did they? In any case they persisted and eventually it came.

The result shows that Man United are not a top European team. They did not kill Sevilla or kill the ball long enough to manage the game.

Their heads went after they conceded the first goal. It was still 2-1, perhaps they were disappointed that it was not 4-1 at that point. They should have managed the game much better.

That is the difference between a good team that can be brilliant at times and a very good side that Man United are not yet.

  13. 'Really sloppy' - Scholespublished at 22:17 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-2 Sevilla

Former Manchester United player Paul Scholes, speaking to BT Sport: "I tell you what, going over there, it's going to be really difficult. It was a really sloppy second half. If away goals were still around United would have a real battle to get through. But they should still have enough."

  14. 'Missed opportunity for Man Utd'published at 22:13 British Summer Time 13 April 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-2 Sevilla

    Peter Schmeichel
Former Manchester United goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's a fair enough result, the way that it developed in the second half.

The players of Manchester United have missed a very good opportunity here.

A few players today need to have a look at themselves and think about whether they are contributing to the team enough. There are a few players who should be embarrassed with their performances.

De Gea played well, he made two fantastic saves, couldn't do anything about the goals. He kept Man United in the lead to no avail. Casemiro came back and played really well as well.

The best player is the guy who scored two goals, Marcel Sabitzer was really good. His team-mates have let him down. he showed the way and they didn't catch on to it.

It's 2-2 and as a Man United supporter, I'm really disappointed. This could and should have been a 5-0 win.

It is funny how football works sometimes.

Last Friday, Sevilla were 2-0 up against Celta Vigo in the last 10 minutes, but down to 10 men. Celta scored twice late on to claim a 2-2 draw.

Less than a week later, they find themselves salvaging a 2-2 draw late on after an opponent is reduced to 10 men.

It's advantage Sevilla, after a mad end to this game.

At half-time, it was all about whether Man Utd might out this time out of sight. But two late goals, with a Lisandro Martinez injury to leave them with 10 men thrown into the mix, means Sevilla are the team with a bounce in their step.
