Flynn Downes is "grateful" for the playing time he has had in the Europa Conference League.

The 24-year-old has made seven appearances for the club in the competition this season and could add to that tally off the bench tonight.

"I've got more of my game time in the Europa Conference League so I'm very grateful for it," said Downes.

"I know how big this is for the club. All the boys know that and the manager has said it too.

"Hopefully we play a lot better and we progress."

David Moyes has been the brunt of a lot of criticism from some West Ham fans recently. Some have even suggested they want him to leave even if the Hammers win the Europa Conference League this season.

Evidently the Scot still has some admirers judging by the number of autographs he was signing as he made his way out of the tunnel.

West Ham are aiming to win their first major trophy since the 1980 FA Cup.

Christian Eriksen says he "dreamed" of being able to play with a team like Manchester United again.

The Denmark international is hoping to help United into the Europa League semi-finals with a win over Sevilla in their second leg.

It is only 14 months since Eriksen made his return to football with Brentford following his cardiac arrest, before joining Manchester United.

"A year ago I dreamed of being where I am today," he said. "It was a dream to come back and play football and I was lucky that the manager wanted me here."

United have already pocketed the Carabao Cup this season and, with an FA Cup semi-final on Sunday, are targeting further silverware. Eriksen knows the threat Sevilla will pose after they came back from two goals down in the first leg.

"We let them into the game in the first game as we had good control in the first hour," he said.

"They have had a lot of different coaches this season, but they are now starting to win games. They have a good team, a good shape and some very good individuals.

"But we have already won a trophy and I am aiming for two more."

West Ham are aiming to reach a European semi-final in consecutive seasons for only the second time in their history tonight.

It would be the fifth time overall.

Clearly, if they won the tournament, they would be in the Europa League next season.

It's a big prize for David Moyes.

"European competition over the last two seasons has been a great experience for us," he says in his programme notes.

"We certainly take nothing for granted and we never will.

"The prestige of competing in Europe is huge for any club, in any country and we know we are in a group of privileged teams."

Marcus Rashford has trained once and you cannot just throw him back in. They've got a big FA Cup semi-final coming up and they'll want to protect him, if they need a goal they can always bring him on.

The biggest call he had to make was Luke Shaw and see if he could come in, but then Dalot has done well against Nottingham Forest.

The team does pick itself with the injuries at the moment.

Sevilla are understandably confident heading into the second leg given the way last week’s match ended at Old Trafford.

Completely outplayed in the first half, Jose Luis Mendilibar’s side grew into the match and snatched a last-gasp 2-2 draw thanks to late Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire own goals.

“If I have to be honest, it’s not an easy game,” the Sevilla boss, who was appointed last month, said ahead of the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan encounter.

“It’s going to be a tough game. For me, we are tied 50-50. It’s true that the fans will help us but on the pitch it’s going to be 11 v 11 players.

“They played so many times in this competition, quarter-finals, so seriously I don’t think it’s going to be an easy game and that’s what the players are thinking now.”

Sevilla have won the Europa League on a record six occasions, most recently lifting it in 2020 having beaten United in a one-legged semi-final in Cologne.

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag talking to BT Sport: "We have to play our best football to get there. This is a great opportunity for some players.

"We play against a tough opponent and need to bring it for a minimum 90 minutes.

"It is more an English team than a Spanish team we are playing against. The second ball is huge, we need to win that and play football.

"It is all about silverware at the end of the season. We have fought to get into this position and now we need to get it done."

West Ham got to last season's Europa League semi-finals, where they lost to Eintracht Frankfurt.

They have won four major trophies in their history - the 1964, 1975 and 1980 FA Cups and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1965.

"We've been here before which will hopefully help," said David Moyes.

"We hadn't before, here at West Ham, before last season, so we didn't know how the players would react to the games.

"There is no given right that you deserve to win or because someone sees you as favourites, you go through. You have to earn the right to go into the semi-final.

"I think we've certainly earned the right to be in the position we're in and to be in this competition last year. If we want to be a semi-finalist, then we have to earn it."

  17. Hammers draw first leg in Belgiumpublished at 19:02 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

West Ham v Gent (Agg: 1-1)

West Ham remain well placed to make back-to-back European semi-finals despite seeing their 100% winning run in the Europa Conference League ended by Gent.

The Hammers looked on course to make it 11 wins out of 11 in Europe this season when Danny Ings tapped home after the hosts were caught out by a quickly taken throw-in.

David Moyes' side, Europa League semi-finalists last season, had to soak up waves of pressure in an intense quarter-final first leg in Belgium and Gent equalised after a clever touch and finish by Hugo Cuypers.

"I didn't think the performance was good but the result was not a bad result," West Ham boss Moyes said.

"I think you will find everyone has worked really hard to be here and they don't want to give up a chance to make a semi-final."

The hosts piled forward in search of a winner to take into next week's return leg, with Gift Orban - who scored a hat-trick in 205 seconds , externalin the last round - hitting the bar with a wonderful 82nd-minute acrobatic attempt.

There was drama deep in stoppage time when Gent's Kamil Piatkowski was shown a red card for bringing down substitute Lucas Paqueta, but it was overturned after the referee watched the incident again on the pitchside monitor.

  18. What happened in the first leg?published at 19:00 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

Sevilla v Manchester United (Agg: 2-2)

Manchester United conceded two own goals and lost Lisandro Martinez to a serious-looking injury in the final six minutes against Sevilla to put their Europa League hopes in jeopardy.

United looked to be coasting to a quarter-final first-leg victory at Old Trafford thanks to Marcel Sabitzer's first-half double.

However, after Antony had hit the crossbar, Sevilla came back into the contest and profited from a terrible ending to the game for Erik ten Hag's men.

First Tyrell Malacia diverted the ball past David de Gea after former Manchester City man Jesus Navas had pulled a low cross back from the goalline.

Then, two minutes into injury time, Youssef En-Nesyri's off-target header struck Harry Maguire to leave De Gea helpless as it flew into the net.

  19. Tonight's actionpublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

We have four matches in the Europa League and four games in the Europa Conference League.

All the ties have to be sorted out tonight and away goals are no longer a deciding factor in European matches so if they're level at full time then bring on the extra time and maybe the penalties.

These are the scores from the first legs.
