“It was a very good performance, all the game we were the best team on the pitch – we started really well, running the game from the first minute, pushing them back.

“It was a very good feeling to see Carlos scoring again, improving and more confident and a great feeling to have Mitro back – we have missed him, he is a really important piece in our squad.

“He’s been important for me since I arrived at this football club – I think in 69 games under me, he has scored 55 goals, the numbers are really impressive. It was nice to see him back and score a goal.

“It’s been a tough period for him, but he has been a very good professional – now I want him to forget completely what has happened, to learn from the moment and do what he is able to do very well, that is score goals.

“It has been a brilliant season – at the start of the season everyone said we were among the favourites to go down and we are now here, in my opinion, where this club belongs.

“It has been hard work from all of us but the season has not finished yet, we want more – our targets are there and the players want to fight for the six points that are ahead of us.”

Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery: "We can be happy and excited about our position. We have to play Liverpool away and here against Brighton, and we will try and and get a chance to play in Europe.

"Overall, I am so, so proud of the work and connection here with our supporters. We've played here the last six matches and won.

"But we have to be very demanding and the first half we played very well. The second half we were maybe a little bit tired.

"For me, it wasn't a penalty because I think the goalkeeper touched the ball."

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Ebs has had a wonder end to the season, as has Olise, once we got into our stride the front three with Eze behind them would be a handful for any team."

On the Joachim Andersen incident: "I don't have one [an opinion], it's a long way away and we aren't looking for individual duels in that moment. The referee didn't think it was an offence, backed up by VAR, so I accept that situation.

"I once got a broken nose by a fella accidentally backing into me, these things happen."

On Palace's form since his return: "It hasn't been a rollercoaster at all, from the offset we have played well, we have got better in these games. Our team has maintained quality and are capable of building on it."

On Zaha's injury: "Zaha felt his hamstring which is worrying, but we won't know how serious until he has the scan. Hopefully it will only take a few days rather than a couple of weeks."

Wolves

Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui speaking to the BBC:

"We tried to compete with them [Man Utd]. Maybe not sure in the first half but they did not have many clear chances. With their first goal it was our only mistake and their only chance in the first half.

"After in the second half we had to take more risks. When we dominated them, we had good situations which we could have finished better. Maybe in the last part of the match we didn't have that 'Killer feeling.' We have to finish better, have more intent.

"Then of course when you don' take advantage of the good chances you have against Manchester United, in the last moments they had two or three very good counter attacks. Dan Bentley made some very good saves.

"But analysing the match as a whole, they didn't have lots of clear chances, neither did we. We had some chances in the box where I think we should do better. In the end maybe they deserve to win."

Unai Emery is now averaging 1.96 points per game this season as Aston Villa manager, the third-best rate of any manager to take charge of at least 10 games in the Premier League this term, after Pep Guardiola (2.41) and Mikel Arteta (2.31).

Bournemouth

Bournemouth manager Gary O'Neil speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We were well beaten by better side today, if we are not at our level this happens to you in Premier League games. We dropped levels all over the pitch, it was really disappointing afternoon."

On Joachim Andersen avoiding a red card following a clash with Jefferson Lerma: "Andersen punched Lerma in the face, Jefferson has a broken nose. I'm not sure what we have to do to get a penalty.

"It's difficult on the pitch to see that, but I have no idea how VAR can give it as check complete.

"He [Lerma] was in pain, his nose is broken, it was a strange incident. But there are other things I need to talk about. A penalty could have made a difference but Palace were far better."

On trying to reach 40 points: "I feel like 39 is a good tally, but we have been stuck on it for two games so doesn't feel as good as it did two weeks ago."

Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper speaking to Sky Sports: "I think it's a well earned and hard fought point. The dressing room is mixed with two goals scored. The goals we conceded were not great. People probably expected us to get beaten. It was always going to be a tight game. To play the way we did, we have to take the positives.

"We carved out the goals and worked hard for them and then gave away two goals. We scored two away from home, we're scoring goals away from home and the guys stuck to the game plan brilliantly. Some positives to take out of it. A lot of the betting would have been for us to get nothing and we got something. We're playing Chelsea way from home, it is our first season back in the Premier League.

"If we picked up a few of them results earlier in the season, we would be a bit higher up the table but I don't want to look back too much.

"It's such a together dressing room and it is serving us well, the commitment and the attitude. We have had to deal with so much this season. We will analyse the things we should have done better, take the things that we should have done better out of it and move forward."

Southampton

Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse said: "It's disappointing. It is a moment that has been coming. We knew we had put ourselves in a difficult position. When these things happen you go away individually and as a club and ask if you have done enough? I don't think we have . We talk about leaving things out there and ultimately that is why we are where we are now.

"Have decisions been right? Have we been good enough on the pitch? Have we done enough as a team to progress? I believe we should be performing at a better level than we have done and we have not done that on a consistent basis. The standards have slipped away and that is why we are where we are now.

"I have been here right through form eight-years-old, for all the ups an downs. I'm sure with the good people at the club it will be back in the Premier League in no time."

Asked about his future, Ward-Prowse said: "I'm not thinking too far ahead. We've just been relegated form the Premier League. I'm not looking beyond tomorrow. It's about sticking together and dealing with it in the right way. Over the last 10 years we have had that kind of consistency and that has wavered. It will be testing for everybody but these are the times that make you as a player and as a club, we have done it before and we will do it again."

Leeds move up a place, but gain no ground on Nottingham Forest following today's results.

If Everton can win tomorrow they'll be in superb shape. Problem is, they face Manchester City.

West Ham are technically still in the battle but need just one more point to ensure their safety. They host Brentford tomorrow.

Leicester know a win over Liverpool on Monday takes them out of the bottom three.

Saints are done and dusted. It's the Championship for them in 2023-24.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham defender Clement Lenglet speaking to PLP: "Disappointing performance because we lost the game and it was three important points to reach Europe next year. During the game I don't think we played a bad game. We fought until the end and had good moments to score. We didn't find a solution. We played against a good team and they are in a good moment.

"Every goal will be important until the end. That penalty can be crucial at the end of the season. We are disappointed so we need to work next week to be competitive again.

"The fans were there until the end. They pushed us and we were close to scoring the second goal. We will try to give everything for them until the end."

Aston Villa

Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey: "We needed this win today. The atmosphere was electric and we made a fast start in both halves. We were unfortunate not to keep a clean sheet.

"The boss is spot on nine times out of 10. He said the danger would be their counter-attacks with their pace and I think we dealt with that well today.

"When [Unai Emery] came in, we just clicked. As the weeks have gone on, we've got stronger. Everyone has built into his ideas. We need to continue this form.

"I don't know. This league is so tough. A few weeks ago we were in pole position to get a [European] spot then we lost a few games. If we do it, it will be a really successful season."

Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag to Sky Sports: "Vital. We had to bounce back after big defeats. We had no energy and played slow [in those games]. Today we had to win and we did it.

"We are very good at making the opponents' goalkeeper man of the match. We have to be more clinical. We have to work on better conversion.

On Garnacho: "He was injured for a couple of weeks. He worked hard. Straight impact. We have seen many times this season his impact from the bench.

"Every game is difficult. You have to be ready for every match."

I don't think it was a classic Manchester United performance but they did enough.

United were clinical in the right moments. They are on track to secure a place in the Champions League.

Another damaging day for Spurs. The top four is now mathematically beyond them. They're at serious risk of seeing Villa and Brighton nip past them in the European pecking order too.

Liverpool surely now have to beat Leicester on Monday to keep their slim top-four hopes alive.

It genuinely feels as though something special is happening at Aston Villa under Unai Emery.

There’s a great connection between him and the fans after six home wins in a row. To sum up how well’s he’s done; when he took over they were 14 points behind Tottenham and now they’re level with Spurs.

If Villa have a positive transfer window, next season could be so exciting for the club.

Harry Kane has scored in 24 different Premier League matches this season, equalling the record for a 38-game campaign - set by Mohamed Salah in 2017-18.

Kane's 27 goals would have been enough for the Golden Boot in each of the past four seasons. Sadly for him Erling Haaland has scored 35.

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace defender Joel Ward on Eberechi Eze: "Ebs is quality, it's incredible what he does on the ball, the way he glides over the pitch is mesmerising. He's taking over control of midfield too, and linking up well with the front guys. His future will be very bright.

On Michael Olise: "They make my life easier, I give them the ball and they do their magic. The world is Michael's oyster, he is going to set the bar so high and go on to special things."

On how Roy Hodgson has improved the team: "One of the things is familiarity, the message he brings is clarity to players on the pitch, and freedom to the lads to express themselves which we keep it solid at the back. With Ebs, Michael, Wilf up front, we can hurt teams.

Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes: "We did our job. We needed to get the three points and win the game. After two defeats, we knew how important it was to get the momentum back to our side.

"We did a professional game and could have scored more. Their keeper had a really good game to keep Wolves in the game.

"It wasn't a case of wasting our chances. Their keeper did a really good job. We have to compliment him."

Crystal Palace
