Chelsea returned to the top of the Women's Super League table with victory at West Ham, putting them in pole position to defend their title with two games remaining.

Emma Hayes' side, recently crowned FA Cup champions, are chasing a fourth successive league title.

It was a routine win in London as Pernille Harder capped off another impressive display with a goal.

Niamh Charles, Sophie Ingle and Erin Cuthbert were also on the scoresheet.

Victory ensures Chelsea sit two points clear of challengers Manchester United - who they beat at Wembley on Sunday - having played 20 matches each.

In a pulsating title race, Chelsea also extended their advantage in goal difference, moving three above Manchester United.

While Chelsea's momentum continues, this is another unwelcome defeat for West Ham, who have now gone 10 games without victory.

They performed well in patches - England international Lucy Parker impressing in midfield, while forward Viviane Asseyi had a few half-chances.

It has been a concerning end to the season for Paul Konchesky's side.

This result means Chelsea could win the WSL title this weekend if they beat Arsenal and Manchester United fail to beat rivals Manchester City.

The Blues could be champions by Sunday night.

"We got an early goal but didn't build on it. We struggled in creating the overload like we wanted to and had to adjust that at half time.

"Of course, when you make changes it has an impact. I knew Erin Cuthbert would be in and around the box.

"I don't talk about goals, I talk about performance. I wanted them to go out and build on the first half performance."

They made a bright and energetic start and the changes in the second half really helped them.

West Ham never really tested Chelsea's defence.

Was that West Ham's chance? Substitute Amalie Thestrup gets in behind, rounds Chelsea keeper Zecira Musovic, but her shot from a tight angle is cleared off the line by Jess Carter.

And then the Hammers come again but Kate Longhurst's strike from the edge of the box goes just over the bar.

Erin Cuthbert is on a mission. The substitute wins the ball back, shakes off a defender and launches a powerful shot just over.

Meanwhile, "We can see you sneaking out" is the cry from the Chelsea fans towards the West Ham supporters.

West Ham also make a swap. Viviane Asseyi is replaced by fellow forward Izzy Atkinson.
