    That's all from me tonight.

Congratulations to Newcastle for securing their place in the Champions League next season.

But Leicester's relegation worries continue. We'll be back on Sunday for all the drama following the bottom four on the final day.

In the meantime, Brighton host Manchester City on Wednesday and Manchester United welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford on Thursday needing a point to join Newcastle in the Champions League.

    See you then!

  2. 'We're going to need help on final day'published at 22:58 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

    FT: Newcastle 0-0 Leicester

    Leicester City

More from Leicester manager Dean Smith speaking to Sky Sports: "We wanted to keep the ball a bit better when we got it, maybe looking for the feet of our front two sometimes.

"Once we regained the ball we had to connect a few more passes before we went there [to the forwards].

"But I understand the players are anxious at the moment, they wanted to keep a clean sheet and we wanted to get to the final bit of the game where we could try and nick it."

On changing tactics as the match went on: "I was always fearful that if we kept Kelechi [Iheanacho] as a sub then brought him on he would break down because he had only just come back from injury.

"He gave us a really good 45 minutes and then we brought on James [Maddison] and we wanted to see if we could get the ball into him. We were hoping there might be a sprinkling of stardust that he can bring.

"Later on, the changes were to bring on the pace of Patson Daka and Harvey Barnes and give them a problem. I thought second half we restricted them better than we managed to in the first half."

On the final day: "We're going to need help. I think there's going to be a lot of anxiety between the three teams that are in it.

"First and foremost we have a really tough job against West Ham, to try and win that game. But I'm sure with our supporters behind us [we can do that], they saw how hard the players worked today.

"And then it is out of our hands. If Everton win... we obviously will give it our best shot and as long as we can say that we have fought tooth and nail, all we can do is put pressure on them."

Nobody had Forest to beat Arsenal or Everton to thrash Brighton or Leicester to take a point at Newcastle. So it's fair to say this great game of football will dish up more surprises on the last Sunday. No one is safe or down yet Everton, Leicester or Leeds.

    FT: Newcastle 0-0 Leicester

Leicester waited until the 92rd minute to muster their first shot of the game - the latest any side has had to wait for an effort in a Premier League game this season.

Newcastle have hit the woodwork 25 times in the Premier League this season (including three times in this game). That's six times more than any other side.

Leicester registered their first clean sheet in 22 Premier League games. It was their first since November.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have kept a clean sheet in 14 of their 37 games, only Manchester United (17) have had more this season.

Eddie Howe's side attempted 698 passes in this game, their highest total in a single match in the Premier League this season.

  5. 'We had a great chance at the death'published at 22:52 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

    FT: Newcastle 0-0 Leicester

    Leicester City

Leicester manager Dean Smith speaking to Sky Sports on his team selection: "We hadn't kept a clean sheet. That's a big thing mentally for the players. It is the first clean sheet at half time that we have had in my first seven games, so it was important that we did that.

"You can't open up here at St James' Park and go at them with the momentum they have. So yes, it was a tough watch at times, but you can see that the players were fighting for it, and we had a great chance at the death."

On the red card incident: "I do feel like there should have been a red card earlier in the game. It was a poor challenge from Bruno [Guimaraes], he's caught [Boubakary Soumare] on the thigh.

"I'm not sure what VAR sees there, from what we have seen so far thoughout this season, that has been a red card many times."

More from Newcastle manager Eddie Howe to Sky Sports: "We'll think about next season during the summer. We don't want to go far away from what we've done. We are realistic to know there will be more games and that's a challenge."

Is this biggest achievement of career? "I'm just trying to flick quickly through my career. This is the most recognised around the country just because of the scale of it.

"I think my first challenge in management trying to keep Bournemouth in the league and in existence was incredibly huge to me and the club.

"This is on a totally different scale media-wise. I'm just grateful to have the opportunity to manage here. We've had great success and that's satisfying."

On Newcastle fans: "I think if you're not united with the fan base, regardless of how you play and performances, I don't think it's going to work. The first thing was to show how important it was that we represented the city in the right way, and that's through sheer hard work and determination.

"The supporters, even in the dark days during the first few weeks, have stuck with us. They've galvanised the squad this year without a doubt.

"Whenever you achieve something you're not just happy to participate. You want to succeed and want success. I want success massively for this football club. We'll enjoy tonight, but we want to bring silverware here if we can in the future."

Newcastle claimed the point needed to secure a top-four Premier League finish with a goalless draw against relegation-threatened Leicester, whose fate is now out of their own hands.

Eddie Howe's side failed to break the deadlock in a match they dominated, striking the post three times, but the result was sufficient for the Magpies to make a return to the Champions League next season.

Newcastle are four points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool heading into Sunday's final day of the season, while Leicester remain in the relegation zone, two points adrift of safety.

  8. 'I make no apologies for the way we played'published at 22:44 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

    FT: Newcastle 0-0 Leicester

    Leicester City

Leicester manager Dean Smith speaking to Sky Sports: "Only time will tell [if it is a good point]. What we have done is taken it to the last game and made Everton need to win. That's what we had to do. I make no apologies for the way we played today. I felt that we had to stay in the game.

"Newcastle have been one of the top three teams all season, they have steamrollered some teams here [at St James' Park]. We couldn't allow them to do that, with the height they have and the delivery from Kieran Trippier. It was still tough defensively, but we needed that extra centre-back.

"We were starved of the ball for long periods but I thought our discipline was good. Yes, they had some chances, but they have done that against most of the teams in the league this season.

"We were hoping in the last 20 minutes or so we could actually go for it a little bit more, and we ended up getting that chance in the 90th minute."

  9. 'Players see fruits of their labour'published at 22:41 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

    FT: Newcastle 0-0 Leicester

    Newcastle United

More from Newcastle manager Eddie Howe to Sky Sports: "Our early look into the transfer market, there is a very small pool of players to look at. We have to recruit wisely, as we have done in every transfer window to date. This will be our toughest one."

On dip in form after EFL Cup final: "I don't think there was anything drastically wrong with our performances, I just think our focus had turned away from the Premier League.

"As soon as the EFL Cup final was over, we had a tough run of fixtures around it. Then we kicked on, and the performances after that period were brilliant. I think that's elevated us to where we are now.

"I have to compliment the whole squad because physically it's been a big demand. They've coped with it really well.

"They've seen the fruits of their own labour really, they've seen the results. That's helped keep them focused and keep them on track."

  10. 'Aim certainly wasn't top four'published at 22:39 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

    FT: Newcastle 0-0 Leicester

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking to Sky Sports: "It's a big relief actually, an amazing night to see the supporters.

"It is just a general reaction to what we've achieved - it is incredible. It's been a great evening for us."

On what he expected this season: "It certainly wasn't top four. I think you always hope, you always believe and you have to dream.

"But we didn't feel that we were ready for that. After last season's battle with relegation it was whether we could consolidate and become a better team.

"To not have that flirtation with relegation and try to give it a go...The lads have been unbelievable for me this year I can't praise them enough. Their attitude, their mentality. It's just been incredible."

Even if Leicester do what Colin says below, it's out of their hands if Everton do their jobs. Here's what the crucial fixtures are next Sunday:

    • Everton v Bournemouth
    • Leeds v Tottenham
    • Leicester v West Ham

There's hope for all three teams. Everton are strong at home, Leeds play a struggling Tottenham side and Leicester face a West Ham team whose priorities are wholly on the Europa Conference League final.

But in short, if Everton win, Leeds and Leicester are relegated no matter what they do on the final day.

  14. 'We didn't get the goal we wanted'published at 22:26 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

    FT: Newcastle 0-0 Leicester

    Leicester City

More from Leicester defender Harry Souttar speaking to Sky Sports: "Ultimately we didn't get the goal that we wanted. But defensively the low block worked well. I thought we frustrated them.

"They did have chances, every team is going to have chances in football, but I thought we kept them relatively quiet, and we could have nicked it at the end."

On the final game of the season: "We've got to win the game. I know it's cliche, but we just have to focus on ourselves. That's all we can do and let the rest take care of itself.

"We're going feeling positive, we've picked up a result and a clean sheet, which, let's be fair, we haven't had enough of this season.

"We go there with a positive mindset for the three points and whatever happens, happens."

    FT: Newcastle 0-0 Leicester

    Leicester City

Leicester defender Harry Souttar speaking to Sky Sports: "We'll take the point here. We know it is a tough place to come. What they have done to teams [this season], the crowd really helps them a lot.

"They normally make a fast start so we knew we had to stay in the game. But we also knew that we would get a chance towards the end of the game bringing our attacking players on - and that's what happened. It was a great save from the keeper.

"Ultimately we rode our luck at times, they had a few chances and our keeper was magnificent again. It's a point, we'll take that, go to the last day and we've got to be positive."

On when he found out he was in the starting XI: "Today. We did tactics and shape throughout the week, but everyone kind of gets involved in that. Today it was about getting the mind on it. I hadn't played for a few weeks but I was delighted to be in the starting XI. Like I said, we take the point and go to the last day."

It's a great season for Newcastle, and this is a great achievement.

Newcastle deserved the win tonight but they sort of ran out of steam towards the end. But they were probably mindful of just getting the point and getting over the line [for Champions League qualification].

This [St James' Park] is going to be a some fortress next season in the Champions League.

Sam: Newcastle get their much-deserved Champions League spot whilst Leicester has a slim chance of survival on the final day with this draw. Win/win.

All passengers who have boarded the Leicester smash and grab train must now disembark. The train has stalled. Our engineers are working on a resolution & hope the train will be moving by Sunday. Alternative routes from Leeds or Everton should be considered

    Kev

Their Burnley days might be behind them, but it’s nice to see that Nick Pope’s saves are still keeping Sean Dyche’s team in it.
