Leicester leave their best two players on the bench?!?!

    Laurie in France

Maddison and Barnes injured? Or are Leicester accepting their fate and protecting their most profitable assets...?

    John

Simeon: Not a Leicester fan but why have they left 2 of their best attacking players on the bench and picked three pondering midfielders when they need goals to stay up? Does Dean Smith have a clue what he's doing?

  2. 'We know we need to perform'published at 19:22 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

    Newcastle United

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson, who makes his 200th Premier League appearance tonight, speaking Sky Sports: "We're at home and want to win the game first and foremost.

"We have an opportunity in front of our fans to get into the Champions League. The result will take care of itself.

"You learn to switch off as a professional. We know we need to perform and be at our best.

"You just go in confident and you almost don't think about scoring which is easier said than done. You want that relaxation in your body."

The bottom line is Leicester have to get something out of this game.

If they lose tonight then they have to win their last game and rely on results elsewhere.

It's not impossible, but Newcastle are on the up.

  4. 'You have to be prepared for changes'published at 19:18 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 BST)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to Sky Sports: "Always the key is giving your best and getting the tactical plan right. We won't take anything for granted. We need the same approach as we had against Brighton and execute what we need to do.

"The players have been very focused on the small-term objectives. But it's never straight-forward and we expect a tough challenge.

"We think Sean Longstaff is fit enough to play. He's a massive part of our jigsaw. Joelinton is fit to play. We haven't done much training since Brighton but he's participated in what we have done."

On James Maddison and Harvey Barnes being left out: "Yeah maybe a little surprised. You have to be prepared for changes in the Premier League. It's always slight tweaks. We have played against different systems all season so we know what we're doing."

It's a tough time at Leicester.

While nothing can be decided tonight, they remain in real danger of being relegated from the top tier for the 12th time in their history.

It would equal the record held by Birmingham City in English football.

The Foxes have lost all nine league matches this season against the teams currently in the top five of the table.

They have gone 21 consecutive Premier League matches without a clean sheet since beating West Ham 2-0 on 12 November.

  7. 'Foxes defence not good enough'published at 19:12 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

Leicester have scored more goals than any other team in the bottom half of the table.

They have some excellent attacking players but their defence is just not good enough.

Even the return of Jonny Evans, who is a real warrior, has not changed that.

That's why I don't think they will be able to compete with Newcastle, who have got a top-four finish in their sights.

    Prediction: 3-1

    Neil Lennon
Former Leicester midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I get the change in formation but I'm not sure about leaving Harvey Barnes and James Maddison out because there are goals there. I am surprised by the change in personnel but not the change in formation.

Leicester have to get something out of this game but it is not impossible. Two quality players he has left out, it is a big gamble.

  9. 'We decided to change it'published at 19:08 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 BST)

    Leicester City

Leicester boss Dean Smith speaking to Sky Sports on why James Maddison and Harvey Barnes are on the bench: "We decided to change it. We need to be harder to beat. The last couple of games, we have needed lots of goals to win them so we needed to make a change. We picked a team we feel can compete.

"I had to think long and hard about it. Watching the game against Brighton, the first two goals are from set-pieces and I wanted another centre-back in the team.

"They were professional about it. I want them to be disappointed if they're not playing but they see the bigger picture and understand why.

"With both Kelechi Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy, we're not coming here just to not get beat but to win the game. We want to create chances as well and be competitive against a good team.

"The good thing is before the weekend started it wasn't in our hands but it is for now. We want to keep it that way."

  10. 'Remarkable turnaround at Newcastle'published at 19:07 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 BST)

Former Newcastle defender John Anderson says the turnaround in 18 months at St. James' Park is "absolutely unbelievable".

"All of a sudden people are really enjoying coming to football matches now," Anderson told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"The atmosphere is electric and it is incredible the season that Newcastle have had.

"You couldn’t have written the script. You’d expect them to go and beat Leicester and then it will be party mood for Stamford Bridge.

"All this has happened a lot more quickly than the new owners and supporters thought it would. It has been remarkable."

  11. The numbers behind Newcastle's seasonpublished at 19:04 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 BST)

Not only will Newcastle clinch a Champions League place if they avoid defeat tonight, a win would take them to 72 points, which would be their highest Premier League total since 1996.

They have scored 67 goals already this season which is their most in a top-flight campaign since 2002.

But there is room to improve defensively.

Newcastle have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their past nine Premier League matches.

In fact, they have kept just one clean sheet in 16 league games.

But securing European football is their main concern for now and they can worry about tightening things up at the back later.

  12. Postpublished at 19:02 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

James Maddison on the bench is a huge call if it is tactical. Surely he's picked up a knock?

We'll hopefully hear from Dean Smith before kick-off.

    Newcastle v Leicester

Some huge breaking team news from St James' Park, which we will come on to.

Newcastle make just one change from the side that beat Brighton 4-1 last time out. Sean Longstaff replaces Joe Willock.

Newcastle XI: Pope, Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn, S Longstaff, Guimaraes, Joelinton, Almiron, Isak, Wilson.

    Newcastle v Leicester

Both James Maddison AND Harvey Barnes are on the bench for Leicester, which is a massive surprise considering the position the Foxes are in.

We wait to see if it's because of injury or a tactical decision from Dean Smith.

There are three changes in all with Ricardo Pereira dropping out too. Harry Souttar, Luke Thomas and Kelechi Iheanacho come in.

Leicester XI: Iversen, Castagne, Souttar, Faes, Evans, Thomas, Soumare, Ndidi, Tielemans, Iheanacho, Vardy.

Leicester manager Dean Smith said his players are "demoralised" by the last two limp defeats in their fight to survive in the Premier League.

A 5-3 loss away to Fulham and a 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool have left the Foxes on the brink of relegation with just two games to play.

"I think they are demoralised by the last couple of results," said Smith.

"The goals we’ve given away in the last two games haven’t been good enough and we’ve been working on that.

"I don’t need to pay homage to these players, I inherited this squad. I don’t have to defend them. I will because of what I’ve seen from them.

"I choose what I say about the players because I can, and they care."

  15. 'It can happen to any team'published at 18:54 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe believes relegation "can happen to any team" because of the strength of clubs within the Premier League.

"Leicester have some outstanding individuals and a really strong squad when you look at it as a whole. But that is the Premier League.

"I’m not going to talk about Leicester’s reasons for being in the position that they’re in currently, all I know is I know their qualities.

"Dean Smith is an outstanding manager. He’s been given a tough task."

  16. What European spots need deciding?published at 18:51 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

Manchester City wrapped up the Premier League title on the weekend and Arsenal are assured of second so there's just two places in the top four still yet to be mathematically secured.

Newcastle and Manchester United both just need one point to confirm their spots in next season's Champions League.

They have two games to do it - including Newcastle's match tonight against Leicester.

After their draw with Aston Villa on Saturday, Liverpool are three points back in fifth with one game remaining.

All sides that finish in the top seven will secure some form of European football next season.

Liverpool are assured of Europa League football at worst as they cannot finish below sixth.

Brighton cannot finish below seventh and therefore are assured of Europa Conference League at worst.

West Ham have reached the Europa Conference League final and if they win, will earn a place in the group stage of next season's Europa League. It will not take away an English place, but become an extra.

Nottingham Forest confirmed their safety with a remarkable victory over Arsenal on Saturday.

That means it is now just three teams left in the battle, with Southampton already down.

Everton picked up a valuable point at Wolves on Saturday but Leeds lost 3-1 at West Ham on Sunday.

After tonight, it will come down to the final games of the season and they all have home advantage.

Everton host Bournemouth, Leeds welcome Tottenham and Leicester face West Ham.

    The football keeps coming.

It's two teams in action tonight that are fighting for very different things in the Premier League.

Leicester desperately need points to avoid relegation. Newcastle just need one to secure Champions League football for the first time in 20 years.

The difference of those outcomes to both clubs will be huge.

    All to play for...
