Scenes of jubilation among Netherlands fans inside the ground. They're outnumbered by USA supporters but it's the Dutch who are making all the noise. The last time the United States lost a group game at the World Cup? Way back in 2011 against Sweden. There's a long way to go in this though.

Jill Roord finishes perfectly into the bottom corner, hard and low.

We've seen this so often with Wolfsburg this season from Roord. Fantastic finish!

    USA almost hit back immediately!

Trinity Rodman curls a snapshot from range, and Daphne Van Domselaar does well to get her fingertips to it and turn it around for a corner.

The Dutch manage to see off the set-piece. Suddenly this game is alive!

    HOW ABOUT THAT!

The Dutch put together their first attack of note today, and it results in a goal.

It looks like Victoria Pelova has wasted the chance with a poor ball into the box, however it deflects back out to her and she has the wherewithal to pull it back to Jill Roord on the edge of the area.

Roord fires it first time into the corner, Alyssa Naeher no chance!

It's brilliant from the United States. They get the ball into those wide areas where they know the have two really dangerous players - DeMelo and Smith.

This US team have given the Netherlands no time to settle and try and find their way into their game. They're certainly finding it difficult to get the ball out of the back three.

The ground is about three-quarters full and those that have turned up are making themselves heard.

Thousands of United States fans have poured into Wellington over the last 24 hours. Stars and stripes everywhere you look.

There are pockets of orange around the ground which is a sprawling bowl of yellow seats.

Sophia Smith shows her class for the first time today.

She cuts in from the left and plays a clever pass into the area, however Savannah DeMelo shanks her shot wide.

The United States are getting on top here.

It's been a very even start to the action, both sides just working each other out at this stage.

A Crystal Dunn ball almost sneaks through the Dutch defence to find Alex Morgan, however it just runs out of reach of the American striker.

This was a 9pm kick-off eastern time in the USA. Good that the team are getting a primetime slot.

Their opening game against Vietnam coincided with Lionel Messi's Inter Miami debut so got overshadowed somewhat.

I think it will be a USA win. I'm expecting a highly competitive game for both nations here and one that I'm excited to watch.

It doesn't get much better than this.

Dutch fans are famous for walking to the ground in numbers behind a big orange double decker bus blasting music from giant speakers.

The bus hasn't been spotted at this tournament so far but fans have travelled in numbers from the Netherlands to support the women's side in New Zealand.

I first met Miek (top picture, centre) at a fan park in Leigh, Greater Manchester, before a Euro 2022 game.

So what's the fan festival like in Wellington?

"Not as good as the one in Leigh," Miek tells me. "The music isn't as good."

  17. The state of play in Group Epublished at 01:55 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

United States v Netherlands (02.00 BST)

Both of the big guns got their campaigns underway with victories - although not with the bang we expected.

USA saw off Vietnam, although only by three goals to nil as they missed several chances - including Alex Morgan having a penalty saved.

Netherlands meanwhile were pushed hard by debutants Portugal, eventually edging to a 1-0 victory.

Both will look to improve their game here, knowing a win would see them take a giant step towards both qualification and topping the group.

Neither side can qualify directly as a result of this game, but the winner here will progress if Portugal v Vietnam later ends in a draw.

Netherlands boss Andries Jonker was relaxed at his pre-match news conference saying this game "will be a fight from the first minute until the last."

However, the Dutch team's preparations at this World Cup have been overshadowed by training pitch troubles.

Before his side's win over Portugal in Dunedin on Sunday, former Wolfsburg men's boss Jonker criticised Fifa, calling the global soccer federation "amateurish" for the poor pitch his squad were given for training.

By Wednesday, he had put all that behind him and spoke of his excitement about a repeat of the 2019 final.

"This will be an example of modern women's football," he said. "It will be a fight from the first minute until the last with teams who want to compete, teams who want to win, teams who respect each other, who both have no fear."

I spoke to Alyssa Thompson earlier this week. She's the only teenager in the USA squad and has a huge career ahead of her.

In 2019, aged 14, she watched in excitement on television at her aunt's house as captain Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle scored to secure a fourth World Cup for the Stars and Stripes.

Now the forward is set to feature against the Netherlands - the team she watched the United States beat in the final four years ago.

"In that moment I wasn't really thinking 'I'm going to be at the next World Cup' because I felt so young and it felt so far away," Thompson, 18, said when I asked about her memories of the 2019 final.

By the way, Thompson's mother left her daughter a voicemail before she arrived in New Zealand.

"As a parent, I would think that I was here to teach you about life," said Karen Thompson. "But honey you have taught me so much more than you'll ever know.

"That fierce and fearless personality is what got you to your dream, the World Cup," she told the Players' Tribune., external
