  2. England wary of complacencypublished at 07:15 British Summer Time 7 August 2023

    England v Nigeria (08:20 BST)

Sarina Wiegman had a word of warning ahead of this game, though.

"What we have seen in this tournament is that nothing is easy," she told reporters in the build-up. "The growth of the game has shown in this tournament.

"We've not had an easy game at all and that's what we expect, that it will be very competitive and we need to be at our best.

"Everyone who plays us wants to beat us. That's nothing new. The games have been very competitive. Nobody can be complacent because that's inappropriate.

"I think Nigeria have done really well in this tournament and were in a very hard group. We all saw they did very well.

"They are an athletic team, quick in the transition and also want to play. We are aware of their strengths. What we will try to do is exploit their weaknesses."

Sarina Wiegman's team won't be daunted by any opponent, though.

They're reigning European champions (obviously!). On top of that, they have won both of their previous two last-16 ties at the Women's World Cup.

Oh, and then there's the small fact that they have never lost a competitive game under their Dutch coach in what is coming up to two years in the job.

It all adds up to England being the current bookies' favourites to claim a maiden World Cup crown.

  4. England looking to clip Super Falcons' wingspublished at 07:07 British Summer Time 7 August 2023

    England v Nigeria (08:30 BST)

England saved their best for last in the group stages, following up narrow wins over Haiti and Denmark with a real statement 6-1 smashing of China.

Nigeria didn't have it quite so smooth, but emerging out of a group featuring both hosts Australia (who they beat) and Canada (pipping the latter to second place) cannot be sniffed at.

They are competing in the knockout rounds for the third time in the tournament's history but the Super Falcons will now be looking to claim their first-ever victory in these stages of the Women's World Cup.

    They're currently five games unbeaten.

    So yeah, no mugs.

  5. Bright and earlypublished at 07:04 British Summer Time 7 August 2023

    Morning everyone.

I hope you're all showered and got a decent breakfast inside you because we're in for another tense morning of Women's World Cup action and you're going to need the energy.

In around about 90 minutes time, England will take to the field to face Nigeria for a place in the last eight.

The Lionesses come into the tie with a perfect record so far, as three wins from three carried them out of the first stage as group winners.

But if history has taught us anything when following England at major tournaments it is to expect tension and to be put through the wringer.

    Nigeria are no mugs.

    It's up for grabs now!

The biggest World Cup guns have misfired.

The USA - the four-time winners - are out. Before them, Germany, who have bagged the trophy twice, got on a plane and flew home before the knockout rounds had even begun.

As it stands, there is only one nation left standing who have won the trophy before - Japan.

England, the European champions, have suddenly seen this tournament open up before them. If they're to go the whole way, though, they first have to beat Nigeria.
