  1. How England reached their first Women's World Cup final

    FT: Australia 1-3 England

England's semi-final with Australia was an instant classic. Ella Toone gave the Lionesses the lead after 36 minutes, firing a superb strike into the top corner.

Sam Kerr's equaliser for Australia was even better, a stunning effort halfway through the second period.

But England continued to push, retaking the lead through Lauren Hemp with 19 minutes remaining.

And the result was wrapped up in the 86th minute when Alessia Russo netted the Lionesses' third.

England goalscorer Ella Toone on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It feels unbelievable. I was speaking to the girls as we celebrated with the crowd and said 'Wow, we are in a World Cup final,' which is something you dream of as a little girl."

England manager Sarina Wiegman on BBC One: "We achieved the final! Unbelievable, it feels like we won the whole thing. It's like I'm living a fairy tale or something?"

England goalscorer Alessia Russo on BBC One: "I'm over the moon, incredible. We've been saying we've been dreaming of the semis but this is what it's all about, a World Cup final with this group. Buzzing."

England defender Lucy Bronze on BBC One: "The one thing I've always wanted to do is get to a World Cup final. After two times of such disappointment, I can't believe it. We played how we wanted to, we were determined, resilient."

  7. 'Best starting line up that England have'

    FT: Australia 1-3 England

    Jonas Eidevall

    Arsenal manager on BBC One

I think this is the best starting line up that England have defensively and it is more dynamic because they have movement from both Georgia Stanway and Ella Toone running deep and that makes it so hard to defend.

Both Alessia Russo and Lauren Hemp can drop and ask for the ball and you have to deal with those attacking runs.

England take their official team photo before the match with the Matildas.
  8. Toone comes up clutch

    FT: Australia 1-3 England

With her goal in this game, Ella Toone became the first England player (men’s and women’s) to score in a quarter-final, semi-final and final of major international tournaments (Women’s World Cup & European Championships).

Sofia: What an incredible game! Going into the game I was very nervous. But from the first goal there was no doubt that we were going to pull it off. Up the Lionesses!

TheMcAdams: We LOVED listening to 5 Live whilst driving home from the South of France. It has made our epic 8 hour drive sooo fun! We cannot wait for Sunday.

  10. 'Start with the same team against Spain'

    FT: Australia 1-3 England

    Alex Scott

Former England and Arsenal defender on BBC One

Ella Toone cheers with fists in the air after she scores the opening goal.

Another debate, another headache that will happen now, does Lauren James come back in?

Because Ella Toone is right there. It's a great headache for Sarina Wiegman to have.

I would say watching this team today and then when you watch Spain play, I would start with the same 11. For discipline and the way Spain play, I think you need to start with this and have someone like Lauren James come on.

  13. 'The mentality is something I have never seen before'

    FT: Australia 1-3 England

    England

    Millie Bright

England captain Millie Bright on BBC One on what it means to reach the World Cup final: “I don’t know. It’s a something we have wanted for so long. We had amazing success last summer but we’ve always known there is something missing and it’s always been the World Cup. To have that opportunity is incredible. Like Less [Alessia Russo] said before, the dream remains alive. Yet again we have found a way."

On why England have been able to make it to two major finals: "The mentality of this group is something I have never seen before. That comes through Sarina and the belief she gives us. We can play so many ways - that is the beauty of this squad. Whatever an opponent throws at us we adapt and find a way to win. I'm really proud of the girls."

On Australia: Fantastic team, I think we knew they were going to have a really good game. We have seen that from their performances. Another team who grinds out results and finds a way to win. That’s what made the game so exciting. It was end-to-end, lots of goals. They could have had a few more but on the night it is just who puts them in the back of the net."

On leading England out at a World Cup final: "It’s crazy. I'm keeping two feet on the ground. Just remain on task, focused. I don’t have any words for that. To be saying we’re going to the final is crazy. Overwhelming, so many different emotions. I'm so happy that we could give the fans the dream back home and the fans here as well. To be leading them out will be absolutely incredible."

  14. 'Spain cannot be underestimated'

    FT: Australia 1-3 England

    Ellen White

Former England striker on BBC One

Salma Paralluelo celebrates scoring by pumping her fists.

We can't underestimate Spain. They've grown through this tournament. Obviously they were disappointed with their performance against Japan.

They've had issues off the field as well so they've got something to prove as players as well.

It's going to be a tricky game for England.

Peter: What an incredible performance. Well done the Lionesses. Every player was brilliant but Lauren Hemp was out of this world. Perfect attitude and commitment. Never give up... amazing show of skill and determination for the full 97 minutes.

Andre: Could easily go down as one of the best England performances of all time (men or women). The crowd, the pressure, the opponent. Hemp with the assist that would be called special if Messi did it. Every player stepped up and made it count.

  16. Ruthless Russo

    FT: Australia 1-3 England

Alessia Russo has now scored seven goals in 12 appearances at major tournaments for England.

Only Ellen White (10) and Fara Williams (eight) netting more for the Lionesses across World Cups and European Championships.

  17. 'I thought, why not just smack it?'

    FT: Australia 1-3 England

    England

Ella Toone watches on in mid-air as the ball flies into the net from her shot.

England midfielder Ella Toone speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It feels unbelievable. I was speaking to the girls as we celebrated with the crowd and said 'Wow, we are in a World Cup final,' which is something you dream of as a little girl.

"It's history and we are all over the moon, we already can't wait for it!

On her goal: "The ball fell to me perfectly and I thought, 'Why not just smack it?' I've never hit a ball like that in my life, and the girls reminded me of that.

"It went top bins and I am just so happy I could help the team to the win tonight.

On Sam Kerr: "Not bad at all, we know what a player she is, she is huge. She scores big goals in big games. I thought we kept her quiet aside from that, but that is the challenge. We went 1-1, stuck to it and went on to score two more.

On Hemp-Russo dynamic up front: "Both unbelievable players, we know what they are about. I think we played to their strengths, both have different strengths.

"They both played really well, have been great for us in previous games and tonight Hempo was on fire again and Less [Russo] with another amazing goal again."

On the group as a whole: "Credit to the players not playing too, they keep us going and give us that support. We are just a strong, strong team.

"For a lot of us it is our first World Cup, for a lot of them it is their third.

"We know how close the older players have been [to a final] in the past, and we have that little bit of wanting to do it for them, for all of the players that came before us, and for everyone back home too."

Anon: What an incredible game and a team of inspirational women. Watching in Madrid and ready for an almighty final on Sunday. Best get out and find myself an Earps shirt!

Anon: That performance front to back was outstanding. And the mental fortitude, Carter misplaced a cross field pass in the first half which gave Australia a chance, then a couple of minutes later she pulls the ball out of the air with exceptional control! That ability to put mistakes straight out of your mind is exceptional and great credit to the team ethic instilled.

  19. Matildas make impression as England celebrate

    FT: Australia 1-3 England

    Emma Sanders

    BBC Sport at Stadium Australia

England players celebrater as Matildas players commiserate in the foreground.

There were wonderful scenes at Stadium Australia at the final whistle.

England's players were initially subdued in their celebrations. They want to go all the way. This is not enough for them yet.

But they did release some emotions in a team huddle afterwards, taking on congratulations from manager Sarina Wiegman before dancing in front of supporters to the classic 'Sweet Caroline'.

It was not the result the Matildas wanted but they were smiling and applauding as they received warm cheers on a lap of honour.

The sell-out crowd here in Sydney have witnessed their success in this tournament and they are likely to have changed Australian women's football forever.

Katy: Watched that in a pub in Copenhagen. What a result! So happy for the Lionesses and Sarina is the best boss! Doing so much for women's football!

Tim: I don't think I've ever seen a better England performance in a knock-out football match, maybe any tournament match, men's or women's.

Anon: Today is my 29th birthday and I just want to pass on my sincerest thanks to our girls for a wonderful birthday pressie. You've made my day.
