Summary

  • Group H: Denmark 1-0 Northern Ireland

  1. Final whistlepublished at 22:09 British Summer Time 16 June 2023

    Denmark 1-0 Northern Ireland

Talk about drama! Those last few minutes had it all as teenager Callum Marshall netted on his Northern Ireland debut to secure what looked like a memorable draw against the group favourites.

Celebrations erupted on the field and among the big Green and White Army contingent in the Parken Stadium, but it was not to be as VAR found that skipper Jonny Evans was in an offside poistion as he headed on to Marshall.

So it's two defeats in their last two Euro 2024 qualifiers fror Northern Ireland and hopes of making the finals are looking slim after just three matches as they remain fifth in Group H.

It's now up to Michael O'Neill to pick up his players for Monday's game against Kazakhstan in what is a must-win encounter at Windsor Park.

We'll be back for coverage of that game but that's all from us for now.

    Thanks for your company.

  2. NI can 'take confidence' from performance - Gillespiepublished at 21:58 British Summer Time 16 June 2023

    FT: Denmark 1-0 Northern Ireland

    Keith Gillespie
Former Northern Ireland winger on BBC Radio Ulster

It didn't look good the fact that decision took too long, we knew what was coming.

Fair play to Northern Ireland, we didn't start the second-half well but we stayed in the game and created a bit towards the end. Full credit to Michael with the substitutions he made, they were very positive.

The goal we conceded was a disappointing one but we should take confidence from that performance.

  3. 'A sickener' - Feeneypublished at 21:55 British Summer Time 16 June 2023

    FT: Denmark 1-0 Northern Ireland

    Warren Feeney
Former Northern Ireland striker on BBC Radio Ulster

We were in disbelief here, Callum is a great finisher and it is heart-breaking for him. Looking at it, with the rules of VAR, it was the right decision but it is a sickener as we deserved that.

It is a must-win now on Monday night, we really need to take the game to them from the start.

  4. Denmark 'got out of jail' - O'Neillpublished at 21:51 British Summer Time 16 June 2023

    FT: Denmark 1-0 Northern Ireland

    John O'Neill
Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio Ulster

Denmark got out of jail there. That is heart-breaking for Northern Ireland.

  5. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:50 British Summer Time 16 June 2023

    Denmark 1-0 Northern Ireland

It's all over in Copenhagen - Denmark take the points as VAR denies Northern Ireland a late leveller.

The hosts deserved the victory, which came from Jonas Wind's strike early in the second half, while there was injury-time heartbreak for Michael O'Neill's team.

Callum Marshall thought he had snatched a last-gasp point but the celebrations turned to agony as Jonny Evans was given offiside after a long VAR check.

Despair for Northern Ireland as the goal is disallowed for offside.

That was a very long check and it's gone against the visitors.

    Denmark 1-0 Northern Ireland

    John O'Neill
Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio Ulster

That was a great bit of skill from Taylor to get Saville away, but even though we didn't have any one there that was a poor cross.

The visitors manage to get into the box but George Saville's cross is easily cut out by Kasper Schmeichel.

Dion Charles has to be strong on the edge of the area. That was probably the best chance we had.

    Denmark 1-0 Northern Ireland

Christian Eriksen's corner is headed wide by Denmark skipper Simon Kjaer as the hosts continue to look the more threatening side.

Northern Ireland are banking on creating that one chance that could make all the difference but time is against them.

    Into the last five minutes.

    Denmark 1-0 Northern Ireland

    John O'Neill
Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio Ulster

We have weathered a bit of a storm and got back into our shape. Maybe in the last 10 minutes we can go to 4-4-2 as they have started to drop off and give us a bit of a chance.

  17. YELLOW CARDpublished at 21:19 British Summer Time 16 June 2023

    Denmark 1-0 Northern Ireland

That looks a bit harsh - Paddy McNair rises high to head clear but clipped an opponent and is booked.
