    Denmark 0-0 Northern Ireland

First chance of the match as Spurs midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg volleys wide at the backpost from an Andreas Skov Olsen cross.

An early warning for Michael O'Neill's team, who are playing deep as expected and hoping to frustrate the Danes.

We weren't certain before kick-off exactly where Trai Hume and Ciaron Brown would play for Northern Ireland.

The early exchanges would suggest, as expected, that it's Brown on the left of the back three and Hume at left wing-back.

It will be fast and frantic until the young players get used to it, but growing up, these are the games you want to play in, what an occasion and atmosphere.

Denmark v Northern Ireland (19:45 BST)

The Denmark kit might look both old and familiar tonight, and that's because it is.

Their kit supplier is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and to mark the milestone it is producing a number of iconic kits for the team to wear.

Tonight it's the famous kit from the Mexico 1986 World Cup, perhaps the most iconic of all.

There were plenty of them about the Copenhagen city centre this afternoon and many fans in the crowd are sporting one.

    Keith Gillespie
Former Northern Ireland winger on BBC Radio Ulster

A point is like a victory when you go to countries like Denmark. We are going to have to defend very well, not give anything away cheaply. We have gone to places like this before and got a result, so hopefully we can tonight.

  8. 'Backs to the wall' game ahead for NI - O'Neillpublished at 19:40 British Summer Time 16 June 2023

    John O'Neill
Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio Ulster

I'm hoping the young players are going to raise to the occasion. This is going to be a backs to the wall game for Northern Ireland, without a doubt. Cathcart missing is a huge blow.

The Parken Stadium is hotting up nicely as kick-off approaches in this Euro 2024 qualifier.

The home fans are in fine voice, having covered the majority of the venue in a sea of red and white - with the traveling 1,700 Northern Ireland supporters adding their famous green and white in their section behind one of the goals.

There is an array of flags among the home fans in the bottom section of the stand opposite. It's an impressive sight as they are waved in the summer air.

The Northern Ireland subs are starting to take their place in the away dugout. We're nearly there.

The last time Northern Ireland played in the Parken Stadium against Denmark, they produced a defensive rear-guard action that earned them a battling 0-0 draw in a Euro 2008 qualifer.

Jonny Evans was winning just his second cap as an 18-year-old who hadn't even appeared in the Manchester United team at that time.

He played left-back that night, as he did on his heroic debut against Spain a month earlier.

Ahead of captaining the side on what will be his 101st Northern Ireland appearance tonight, the now 35-year-old said he remembers the game fondly.

  13. Bradley and Hume both good enough to adapt for NI - Bruntpublished at 19:34 British Summer Time 16 June 2023

Denmark v Northern Ireland (19:45 BST)

Former Northern Ireland international Chris Brunt believes that Michael O'Neill can incorporate exciting right-backs Conor Bradley and Trai Hume into the same starting XI.

Bradley enjoyed a stellar spell on loan at Bolton in League One this season from Liverpool, whilst Hume has had a breakout year with Sunderland in the Championship.

That has led to questions of if O'Neill can fit both dynamic full-backs in the same team and Brunt, who won 65 caps for his country, believes Hume could play at right centre-back with Bradley at right-wing back.

With both starting this evening, it will be one to keep an eye on.

It's been incredibly hot and sunny in Copenhagen over the last few days, but the rain arrived - for the first time in three weeks according to locals - at about 18:00 BST.

It persisted for about an hour but the skies over the Parken Stadium are dry now as kick-off approaches.

It's not just as warm as it was last night, either, which the Northern Ireland players will no doubt appreciate.

  19. Hoijlund on hot streak!published at 19:18 British Summer Time 16 June 2023

Denmark v Northern Ireland (19:45 BST)

Northern Ireland will have to be wary of the threat posed by Denmark's 20-year old striker Rasmus Hoijlund.

The Atalanta forward scored a hat-trick in his first start for his country against Finland in March and netted twice in their shock 3-2 defeat against Kazakhstan.

He will be keen to continue his hot streak this evening with a host of top European clubs rumoured to be interested in acquiring his services this summer.

The Parken Stadium in Copenhagen is an impressive arena.

Renowned for its atmosphere, the first thing you notice about 38-000 capacity ground before the crowd arrive is just how strikingly red it is. Every single seat is red.

There are what look like glass-fronted office blocks in each of the four corners and it's the same in the top half of the stand behind the net where the 1,700 travelling Northern Ireland fans will sit.

The stadium hosted the 2001 Eurovision Song contest, the same year Northern Ireland grabbed a 1-1 draw here in a World Cup qualifier.

Michael O'Neill's men would no doubt take a similar result this evening.
