Brendan Rogers was very successful at Celtic. He left due to a perceived lack of support. I’d be more than happy to see him back.

  3. Is Potter what Celtic need?published at 12:24 British Summer Time 6 June 2023

Graham Potter is a name I'm sure a lot of Celtic fans will be happy to see.

Sacked by Chelsea on the same day as Brendan Rodgers left Leicester, he now finds himself vacant and available for work.

A former full-back in the Football League with Stoke, West Brom and York, Potter began his managerial career with Ostersunds FK in 2010, guiding them from the fourth tier of Swedish football to the first, winning the 2017 Swedish Cup and reaching the knockout stages of the Europa League.

He then took charge of Swansea City in June 2018, spending one season with the Championship side before joining Brighton in May 2019 following Chris Hughton's dismissal.

Potter went on to guide the club to 15th, 16th as well as the ninth-place finish in his three full seasons in charge.

But things didn't quite go to plan when he joined Chelsea in September 2022.

Blues dropped to 11th - 12 points outside of the top four - and he was dismissed in April.

So, could Potter be the person to continue Celtic's success?

  4. Moyes to Celtic?published at 12:16 British Summer Time 6 June 2023

West Ham are looking to secure their first major trophy for 43 years in tomorrow's Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina, but the spotlight today is on manager David Moyes.

Could he leave the Hammers for Celtic?

Moyes' side finished 14th in the Premier League table this season and six points above the relegation zone.

There were question marks over the Scotsman's position for a considerable amount of the season but the club stuck by him.

If they defeat their Italian opponents tomorrow, it will secure a third successive season in Europe under Moyes.

Could Moyes be persuaded to leave the East London club?

  5. Rodgers to return?published at 12:08 British Summer Time 6 June 2023

Brendan Rodgers, who spent two and a half seasons at Celtic between 2016-2019, is favourite to return to The Hoops.

During his three-year stint at the club he led them to seven domestic trophies, but his departure was rather bitter when he left the job for Leicester City.

Fast forward four years and he finds himself jobless after being sacked by Leicester on April 2.

The 50-year-old led the Foxes to consecutive fifth-place finishes in his first two full seasons, and they also beat Chelsea to lift the FA Cup in 2021.

But his side began the 2022-23 campaign with seven defeats from their opening 10 Premier League games, slumping to the bottom of the table before a run of four wins from five games going into the World Cup break.

A fifth defeat in six league games dropped them into the relegation zone, he was sacked and Leicester never recovered.

Could he be set for a return to Celtic?

  7. Rodgers 'perfect candidate' for Celtic despite 'terrible' departurepublished at 11:59 British Summer Time 6 June 2023

With Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou confirmed to be joining Tottenham next season, attention turns to who the club will look to replace the outgoing Australian.

Former Scotland winger, and boyhood Celtic fan, Pat Nevin gave his view to Good Morning Scotland on some of the reported runners and riders for the job.

On ex-Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: "He would be the perfect candidate if he had left under better circumstances. The timing of it was terrible. It would work perfectly and the fans would forgive him, as long as he won."

On West Ham boss David Moyes: “To walk away from the Premier League, it would be a tough one, but will it come round again for him?"

On ex-Chelsea head coach Graham Potter: "He was a superb manager at Brighton. He got no time and no great help at Chelsea. I think he would be brilliant."

On current Celtic coach John Kennedy: "I think he will be a great manager at some point and I think Ange was pushing him."

New boss at spurs has to prepare for Kane to go, and surely as a business Spurs has to let Kane go they cannot let him play out his contract and leave for nothing?

    James

Huge step up for Ange. It will be interesting to see how he manages good players against good opponents when he doesn't have a team that can win the league blindfolded. When he's come up against semi okay teams in Europe so far he's been absolutely smashed...

    Ange PostecoglouImage source, Getty Images

Former Tottenham defender Stephen Kelly, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live on Ange Postecoglou: "At Tottenham with every manager that goes there, there is a chance it might not work the way things have gone of late. However, I think he fits the bill for what Tottenham want now. They have gone for the tried and tested with Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte which just hasn’t worked.

"They are trying to get someone who is similar to Mauricio Pochettino that plays attacking football and is energetic and that is what he does. He has not been at the top level in terms of the English league, so that goes against him in terms of a lot of the fans but what he did at Celtic was phenomenal. He has earned the right to come and manage at this level.

"It seems like the perfect fit as he actually seems like he wants the job which is nice. He will need a couple of windows to get the players in who will suit his style and get rid of the players who don’t."

  11. No time for Postecoglou to wastepublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 6 June 2023

Spurs have spent 10 weeks searching for Antonio Conte's successor, with Julian Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique, Brendan Rodgers, Arne Slot, Graham Potter, Julen Lopetegui and Pochettino all linked with the role at some point.

Since losing 2-0 against Liverpool in the 2019 Champions League final, they have claimed just one top-four finish in the subsequent four seasons.

Postecoglou is no stranger to arriving at a club facing a significant task having taken over Celtic in the summer of 2021 after they had finished the season 25 points behind champions Rangers.

When he arrived at Celtic, chief executive Peter Lawwell had been replaced by Dominic McKay, Nick Hammond stepped down as head of football operations and long-serving captain Scott Brown left to join Aberdeen.

There are several similarities as he walks through the door at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with chairman Levy searching for a new sporting director following the exit of Fabio Paratici, who resigned after losing his appeal against a 30-month ban from football.

Addressing the uncertainty surrounding the future of striker Harry Kane - with Real Madrid showing interest in the England captain - will be high on the agenda this summer as he looks to shape a squad capable of guiding Tottenham back into the Champions League.

Nigel: Those bemoaning the quality of Scottish football and Gerard's failure in England have short memories- seem to recall Sir Alex doing quite well here.

Luke: Why would you do that! Why would you turn down Champions League group stage football and a high probability of winning medals at Celtic to join Spurs? Good manager, bad decision.

Stephen Vincent: 'Ange, Ange, When will those clouds all disappear'? Blue skies now for Tottenham

  13. Postecoglou - the boy from Greece who has become Tottenham's main manpublished at 11:23 British Summer Time 6 June 2023

    Tom English
    BBC Scotland's chief sports writer

On Saturday, Postecoglou won his fifth domestic trophy from a possible six since his move to Scotland from Japan in the summer of 2021. On Tuesday, he was officially unveiled as the new head coach of Tottenham Hotspur.

A Celtic manager winning lots of titles is nothing new, but there is something different about this.

Postecoglou didn't inherit a champion team in need of minor tweaks as, say, Brendan Rodgers had done before him. The season before Postecoglou took over, the club lost their bid for 10 league titles in a row by a whopping 25 points and the mood music at Celtic was dismal.

  14. It has been great to work with Postecoglou - McGregorpublished at 11:18 British Summer Time 6 June 2023

Celtic Captain Callum McGregor said: “It has been great to work with the gaffer over the past two seasons and to achieve the success that we have, especially achieving yet another Treble at the weekend.

“In fact, to win five out of six domestic trophies is a tremendous achievement and that is testament to the real focus and relentlessness of the manager, the players and our whole backroom team who have all worked so hard."

Gutted, but can't really begrudge him 'Top 6' Spurs. In saying that, if you’re the manager of a club I think you have more of a responsibility than a player to stick around longer than 2 years considering we gave him his big European opportunity and moulded the whole football department around him.

    Patrick

Spurs fans should be ecstatic right now but I doubt they are Ange is a superb manager who transformed Celtic into a TEAM playing fast attacking football with a winning attitude! He signed some great quality players at little cost and develop them. What’s not to like and admire!! Good Luck Ange you will be missed at Celtic, but the Ange effect will continue at Celtic due to your smart business decisions which Celtic will benefit from in seasons to come as Celtic cash in on your great buys

  16. 'I will forever be a supporter of this great institution'published at 11:05 British Summer Time 6 June 2023

In his statement to Celtic, Ange Postecoglou continued: "Our supporters have been magnificent to me and I thank them for the way they have embraced me during the past two years. My ambition was always to give our fans a team they could be proud of, a team people talked about and I think we have achieved that.

"Celtic is a phenomenal football club, and so much more - and I will forever be a supporter of this great institution. I wish everyone connected with Celtic nothing but continued success."

New Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has spoken of the "honour" it was to lead Celtic.

In a statement, he said the Scottish champions wanted him to stay but "a new opportunity has been presented to me and it is one which I wanted to explore".

"It was an honour to be asked to be Celtic manager and during my two years I have given everything I have to deliver success to our supporters. Culminating in the Treble at the weekend, my players and backroom team have been brilliant for me on this journey," he said.

"They have given us all some fantastic moments through their energy and effort, creating real quality, winning football."

Postecoglu may do well at Spurs, we'll see. But - and nobody seems to want to say this - success in Scotland is hardly a guarantee of success, Rodgers and Gerrard have demonstrated that. There simply isn't the competition, and Celtic would probably struggle in the Premier League.

    Paul

I wish Postecoglu all the best in the Spurs job. He's the best the club can attract at the moment and his job is daunting. He's got a four-year contract. Let's hope they give him time and don't sack him if he didn't hit the ground running.

    Andy

As a Celtic fan I’m disappointed to see Ange go, feel he had a point to prove in Europe this season. However, it’s tough to turn down one of the Prem’s big six when they come calling, good luck to him. His football is a joy to watch and he’ll win over the Spurs fans eventually. The only concern is whether he can tame the divas in that dressing room.

  19. Football Australia congratulates Postecogloupublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 6 June 2023

Ange Postecoglou managed Australia from 2013-17, and his former employer has congratulated him on his appointment as Tottenham manager.

Football Australia CEO James Johnson said: "This appointment is a personal triumph for Ange and his family, and we are absolutely delighted for them.

"Ange personifies the Australian football story: a proud Greek-Australian who immigrated to Australia at a young age and found his place in a new Australia through football.

“This new chapter at Spurs for Ange is a testament to his enduring determination, skill, and vision as a leader. It is also a moment of great pride for Australian football and highlights this current golden age as we see more of our coaches making an impact on football around the globe and a steady presence of players across European leagues, particularly in Great Britain."
