  1. Mitrovic departure leaves 'an incredibly bitter taste'published at 14:43 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

As weekends go, it's been a stinker. To lose 3-0 to your rivals and have your talismanic striker leave, all in one afternoon, is quite a lot to take. I was hoping for the Lionesses to cheer me up on Sunday, but that went up in smoke too.

There is a lot of soul searching amongst the fanbase, partially because of Saturday's result, but mostly because of the sale of Aleksandar Mitrovic. The club's statement saying that "the player had consistently made his desire to leave known" leaves an incredibly bitter taste.

On the other hand, we have to remember what Mitrovic gave to the club. Seeing him score 43 goals in one season, I don't care what level it was at, is something I will never ever forget. Then to witness him finally silence his doubters last season, who questioned his ability at the highest level, was a joy to behold too.

Louis Saha was a brilliant striker, but Mitrovic is my personal favourite forward of all-time. I loved his competitiveness, his intelligence, and his ice-cold ruthlessness in front of goal. He was the hero who saved us on so many occasions and, in time, that's what he'll be remembered for.

If he had to leave, it should've been to a club where he could have truly tested himself - a club in Europe, for example. At only 28-years-old he's got years left in him, but now he'll just be shooting fish in a barrel in a league that has no legacy, no prestige and, barring a few superstars, no quality.

It's the end of an era and that's tough to take, but nobody is bigger than the club. Hopefully we spend the money we received for him wisely.

  2. 'Fans are emotional, players are logical'published at 14:42 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

    Arsenal v Fulham (15:00 BST)

    Sebastien Bassong
Former Spurs defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

As a fan you are looking for loyalty from players, you are emotionally attached.

For Mitrovic he was being logical.

In these situations you see that football is very ruthless. The fans will feel like the club gave him everything, but you only have one life and Mitrovic made his decision.

It is Fulham's job to just move on and find a way to play without him.

  3. 'Mitrovic deal shows the player power in the game'published at 14:41 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

    Arsenal v Fulham (15:00 BST)

    Chris Wilder
Former Sheffield United boss on BBC Radio 5 Live

Marco Silva has done a fantastic job there, getting them out of the Championship and delivering a good season last year.

Finished in such a high position, played a nice style with Mitrovic being central to everything they did.

I think it just shows the player power there is now. If he wants to move he moves, and you are left feeling sorry for the club.

People may say you should have contingency plans but in such a short space of time to deal with the situation is very difficult to manage.

  4. 'It's not going to be easy to fill Mitrovic's boots'published at 14:40 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

    Arsenal v Fulham (15:00 BST)

Former Premier League defender Steve Brown has been speaking to BBC Radio London's The Far Post podcast about Aleksandar Mitrovic's departure: "Once your head's turned there's just no way you're not going. I think it would be detrimental to the rest of the squad to keep him because all I think you're going to see is the negativity around the training ground everyday until the deal is done.

"Although you have a pot of money now, there aren't really many strikers that could guarantee you 15-20 goals anymore. They're not built like your Shearers and your Henrys and Fowlers. You don't see too many like that because the game has developed in terms of what they're asking centre-forwards to do these days.

"They probably don't get as many opportunities as they did back then because their job is slightly different to centre forwards back then, but it's not going to be easy to fill Mitrovic's boots that's for sure. You can scan the world as much as you like, but he was a proven goalscorer with a good track record that is going to be hard to replace."

On whether it has impacted their start to the season: "It has had a knock on effect to performances in my opinion. In terms of performances on the pitch, there's a lack of opportunity and a lack of chances. Fulham were exciting last year and the one thing they did was create chances."

Fulham are now, of course, in a post-Mitrovic era, with their prolific forward Aleksandr joining a host of megastar players in Saudi Arabia.

You'd imagine the Cottagers will dip into the market for a replacement with the hefty fee they received. However, they have also been proactive by picking up Raul Jimenez from Wolves. Today, he's returning the ground at which he suffered that horrific skull injury that kept him sidelined for so long and threatened to end not only his career but his life.

Thankfully, he's recovered now and is able to return to playing. You have to imagine he'll get a warm reception today. Unless he starts banging em in for the visitors that is.

Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will be making presentations to the families of 13 past players who now qualify for league title medals due to a change in regulations introduced by the Football League.

Amongst them will be the family of Munich air disaster victim Geoff Bent, who was part of the United championship winning squads in 1956 and 1957, but didn't play enough games to receive a medal at the time.

  7. Hodgson hails 'trump card' Frankpublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

Brentford v Crystal Palace (15:00 BST)

Roy Hodgson hailed Brentford's unbeaten start to the season under "trump card" Thomas Frank.

On Saturday the Bees face a Crystal Palace side looking to bounce back from a narrow defeat by Arsenal last week.

With Brentford yet to taste defeat this season, Hodgson said: "As far as their [Brentford's owners'] trump card was to find Thomas Frank and to get behind him, they have showed their faith in him and believed in what he does.

"And to give him the chance to put this team together and give him the type of players he's asked for, to be able to play the type of football they want to play.

"They've reaped a very big reward for it, because not only did they get back into the Premier League, they've got into the top 10 of the Premier League already."

Hodgson is also impressd by the way thee Bees have coped in Ivan Toney's absence.

He said: "To be able to shrug off the loss of a player so important as Ivan Toney is in itself an enormous strength and something I'm sure Thomas is proud of doing."

  9. Martial with a point to provepublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

Man Utd v Nottingham Forest (15:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

It is nearly eight years since Anthony Martial signed for Manchester United.

The France forward has been a frustrating presence in the United squad since then, mixing moments of genuine brilliance, with some completely ineffective performances and a series of injuries.

His presence does allow Marcus Rashford to move out to his favoured left-sided attacking role.

Erik ten Hag will hope the move makes his side more effective going forward.

They have managed just one goal so far this season - a header from Raphael Varane against Wolves.

  10. 'Scars from last season yet to heal at Everton'published at 14:34 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

    Everton v Wolves (15:00 BST)

    Sebastien Bassong
Former Spurs defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is always a risk to throw young players into this sort of situation.

You are looking to find the right balance, there will always be questions when things go wrong.

Young players bring that fearlessness, new energy and hunger that people are looking for.

For Everton about pressing the reset from last season. I think the scars from last season haven't healed yet which is why we are only two games in and talking about 'Here we go again'

  11. Gunner win again?published at 14:33 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

    Arsenal v Fulham (15:00 BST)

Arsenal are the first of the three teams still with a 100% record in the Premier League this season to get a stab at extending it.

They host London rivals Fulham at the Emirates and will absolutely be favourites to win.

In fact, just to underline that, the Cottagers have never won an away match against Arsenal in any competition (D6, L25), including all 30 league fixtures. It's the most one team has faced another away from home without winning in English league history.

Fulham are winless in their last 10 Premier League games against Arsenal (D2, L8) and have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their past 16 games against the Gunners.

    Cheers Tom.

Yep, we've got four games coming your way at 3pm. Some intriguing games amongst them too. And dare I say a few teams already feeling a bit of pressure, as mad as that is after two matches.

Ben Davies shoots over the top after a good Spurs breakaway, that was a chance. Bournemouth for all their bright play in stages have only managed three efforts on target.

    Bournemouth 0-2 Tottenham

    Francis Benali
Former Southampton defender on BBC Radio 5 live

The game has gone a bit flat now.

The home fans seem very much resigned to the outcome. A raft of changes helped to break the flow of the game too.

Bournemouth did make a good start to the second half but after that second goal it has been one way traffic really.
