  1. 'We need to improve'published at 19:49 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

FT: Man Utd 0-1 Crystal Palace

    Manchester United

Manchester United's Mason Mount, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's a frustrating one. We know we need to win these games. We tried to create and had a few chances but we need to look at the opportunities we had and the areas we can improve.

"It's a tough one to take. Palace had 10 men behind the ball and they counter well. We did have chances but we didn't create enough. Listen, there are a lot of things to look at. We need to improve. We have games thick and fast. It's very frustrating."

We've still got some reaction to come from our 3pm matches so while we're getting through reaction from Spurs v Liverpool we'll have a look at some of that, too.

  3. 'If you could bottle that feeling you could sell it for millions'published at 19:47 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    FT: Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison speaking to Sky Sports: "Doing it like that is the hard and the long way. That feeling is very rare, when we beat Sheffield United I said I hadn't felt that in years. If you could bottle that you could sell it for millions and millions.

We don't like it easy do we? That is digging in, that's character, and I'm proud of them."

On the importance of the connection with the fans these moments bring: "The feeling after Sheffield United is something I've never really felt before in terms of a togetherness between everyone at the club. You see the faces on fans, stewards, there's a feeling. That's going to help. The smiles are going to be a little bigger tonight."

On the feeling that they were going to draw against nine men: "It's one of those like 'I hope it's not going to be one of them, especially against nine men'. We gave away a sloppy goal I think. To go to the death like that and keep going, there were groans and whatnot. Pedro got into a dangerous position, put a ball in, and then we charged down the touchline."

On if it's more difficult playing against nine men: "You wouldn't really practice it that much. It actually becomes probably more difficult. Liverpool are devestating counter attacking on the break, their philosophy 11v10 doesn't really change. We know 11v10 their strengths are still there. I'm a bit of a fuzzy head at the minute"

On the red cards: "Jota's definitely was. The Curtis Jones one early on got shown on the big screen I think was a red card as well. I'm not sure Jurgen will complain too much about those too."

John: One side lacks quality in depth, the other lacks self-control, neither of these teams will challenge for the title, 4th place play-off in essence.

Christopher: Just heartbreaking. A red card that shouldn't have been. A goal wrongly chalked off for offside. A stupid red card by Jota and then a superb team effort until the end.

Nine yellow cards in that match. Plus the two reds.

    Wow.

Remarkably, that is the first time Tottenham have beat Liverpool since 2017. That's 11 games without a win.

Spurs remain unbeaten in eight Premier League games this season and that victory moves them to second in the table. One point off Manchester City.

One thing this game tells us, Spurs won't be up there in May. Liverpool were on top with 11, then again 10 and barely managed to break down 9. Nothing off the bench and a fairly average starting 11. Gutting for the reds but we'll be well up there this year.

    Matt

Am I missing something? Did spurs just win the Champions League final? Or did they just beat nine men with a last second own goal?

  9. 'One of the best games I have ever witnessed'published at 19:34 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    FT: Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool

    Stephen Warnock
Former England and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

We have just witnessed one of the best games of football that I have seen in a long time.

The quality that was on show from both sides was incredible.

Liverpool even with ten and then nine men managed to do their part in terms of making it such a spectacle. But Spurs had enough in the end to get that winning goal.

A great result for them and Big Ange, but questions will be asked of the officiating in the aftermath.

The Liverpool players look absolutely devastated after that.

It marks their first defeat of the season.

By contrast, Spurs players are dancing and celebrating with the fans. It would've been very disappointing for them if they had only managed a point against the nine men of Liverpool. They hadn't looked likely to score to be honest, but, that's sometimes the way it goes.

I think Spurs winning against a team with nine men through an own goal tells you all you need to know about their title credentials

    Stevo, Cheltenham

Spurs fan here, obviously delighted but I do feel sorry for Matip and Liverpool today, however sometimes you earn your luck and Spurs of old would of lost this.

The Spurs fans moaned when Kulusevski played the ball backwards, but it made the space for Porro down on the right hand side. Patience has paid off!

He darted down towards the by line and Matip just gets it horribly wrong! Doesn't sort his feet out. Alisson punches the ball in frustration.

Spurs needed one moment of quality and right at the end they have got it.

GOAL - Tottenham 2-1 Liverpoolpublished at 19:29 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Joel Matip (OG, 90+6 mins)

    Ohhhh what drama!

It looked like Tottenham were going to rue all those wasted chances and come away from this with just a point against the nine men of Liverpool.

With what is probably the last kick of the game, Joel Matip attempts to clear but instead fires into the roof of his own net from Pedro Porro's teasing cross.

Cruel, cruel, cruel for the Liverpool man but joy for Spurs.

Allison has gone into the book for time wasting. Simon Hooper must be running out of room on that yellow card, now.

Just moments remain for Liverpool to hold on. Or for Spurs to get more than a point from this match.

At one point earlier in this match Darwin Nunez was stripped and ready to come on. I think it must've been around the time that Diogo Jota was sent off.

After that Jurgen Klopp had to change tact.

Nunez watches on from the bench. How he'll wish he could've come on and had an impact.

Dax: Spurs subs seem like we’re playing for a draw against an 9 man team at home. Baffling.

It seems like great drama when there are players sent off, especially 2 from 1 team. But it inevitably just spoils the game.
