Five changes apiece but still very strong line-ups from both sides.

Sean Dyche throws loan signing Jack Harrison in against the club he may well have joined in the sumer.

Harrison was undergoing a medical with the Toffees when Aston Villa swooped to agree a deal with Leeds.

But Unai Emery's side were put off by the winger's hip injury, which has kept him out until tonight.

This is his first appearance since the final day of last season in Leeds' 4-1 home defeat by Tottenham, which sent the West Yorkshire side down.

Newcastle v Man City (20:00 BST)

    Manchester City

Manchester City defender Nathan Ake speaking to Sky Sports: "[It is a] tough one. Always a tough place to come here. We are going to do our best to win tonight.

"I think as another game we take it game by game. This is another competition and we still want to win. We see today as a very good opportunity."

What do you need today? "Concentration from the whole team. They have a big threat and they are very energetic. We have to be at it again today, for sure."

Everton midfielder James Garner admits it has been “hard to stay positive” following their tough start to the season but thinks confidence is now growing before their Carabao Cup trip to Aston Villa.

The Toffees ended their winless league run with a 3-1 victory over Brentford on Saturday thanks to goals from Abdoulaye Doucoure, James Tarkowski and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Garner registered his first assist of the season when he set up Calvert-Lewin to seal the three points and Everton will look to make it back-to-back away wins with a third-round victory at Villa Park.

Before the weekend win pressure had been building on Everton and Garner says it has not been easy to play with a smile.

He said: “When you are losing games, it is hard to stay positive.

“The manager wants you to play with a smile on your face and all that, but it’s hard to remain positive, happy and smiley when the results are not going your way.

“But it’s time for us to change that now. We’ve definitely got the squad to be nowhere near that relegation zone, now we just need to start putting the points on the table and slowly climb up the table.”

  4. A six-goal thriller in 2021published at 19:20 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

    Liverpool v Leicester (19:45 BST)

On 21 December 2021, tonight's exact fixture between Liverpool and Leicester City was played out.

The Foxes travelled to Anfield for a League Cup clash - this time in the fifth round - that ended up seeing six goals scored in normal time.

For the visitors, James Maddison grabbed one and Jamie Vardy got a brace, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino were on the scoresheet for the hosts.

Jota's goal came in the 68th minute, with Liverpool trailing 3-1, but Minamino struck in the dying moments to force extra time.

Jurgen Klopp's men won on penalties in the end. Could we see an as enthralling encounter this evening?

  12. 'The effect the crowd have on the game is magic'published at 19:11 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

Lincoln v West Ham (19:45 BST)

Lincoln City are bidding to knock out their second Premier League team of the season, having beaten Sheffield United on penalties in the last round.

The Imps have not won any of their four League One games since that tie though and sit in mid-table.

“It’s really pleasing for us that we’ve got a home tie. We’ve got an incredible crowd, and it’ll be absolutely rocking like it always is," he said.

“The impact the crowd play, and the effect they have on the game is magic, so it should be a really buoyant night.

“They’re an outstanding team, a very, very good Premier League side with David Moyes as their manager.

“They’ve got a huge history, and we’re going to have a full house. Hopefully it’ll be a great night for all involved.”

  13. Team news - Teenager Miley makes first Newcastle startpublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 27 September 2023

Newcastle v Man City (20:00 BST)

Newcastle hand a first start to 17-year-old midfielder Lewis Miley, who has one 14-minute appearance in the Premier League to his name from last season.

He is one of 10 changes, that sees only goalkeeper Nick Pope survive from the XI that hammered Sheffield United 8-0 on Sunday.

Jamal Lascelles and Paul Dummett come in at the heart of defence, summer signings Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento get a chance to stake a claim, while Sandro Tonali is the experienced head in midfield.

The bench includes plenty of first-team talent - Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes and Miguel Almiron included - should things take a turn for the worse.

Newcastle XI: Pope, Livramento, Lascelles, Dummett, Targett, Hall, Miley, Tonali, Murphy, Joelinton, Isak.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola revealed this week that Kalvin Phillips would start and make only his fifth game for the club since joining from Leeds in the summer of 2022. So it is no surprise that he's included as one of seven changes.

Those keeping their spot from the weekend are defenders Manuel Akanji and Josep Gvardiol and forward Julian Alvarez.

Oscar Bobb gets some more minutes in midfield, with Mateo Kovacic back after injury. In net, Stefan Ortega takes Ederson's place.

City also have a stacked bench, which includes Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.

Man City XI: Ortega, Lewis, Akanji, Ake, Gvardiol, Gomez, Phillips, Kovacic, Bobb, Grealish, Alvarez.

Ollie Watkins has revealed his relief after his first league goal of the season.

The Aston Villa striker opened his Premier League account by grabbing the winner in Sunday’s 1-0 victory at Chelsea.

Watkins scored a hat-trick in the 5-0 Europa Conference League qualifying win at Hibs last month but has been waiting to break his top-flight duck.

“It’s a bit of a relief, really, because the more the games go by, there’s a lot of talk and pressure,” he said, before the Carabao Cup visit of Everton.

“But I just try and block that out and I back myself in front of goal no matter what anyone says.

“The first one is always hard to get. I’m delighted to get off the mark now. I’m looking forward to the games coming up now and plenty more goals for the season.”

Watkins’ second-half strike at Stamford Bridge lifted Villa to sixth in the Premier League before turning their attention to the Carabao Cup.

    Chelsea v Brighton (19:45 BST)

    Chelsea

    Mauricio PochettinoImage source, Getty Images

Chelsea's season has begun in poor style with one win and three defeats from Mauricio Pochettino’s first six Premier League games.

The Argentine said he waited until Monday to address his players following the 1-0 loss to Aston Villa, which came after the visitors took advantage of defender Malo Gusto’s second-half red card to win it with a breakaway Ollie Watkins goal.

“We talked on Monday and Tuesday with the players," said Pochettino. "But it’s my duty, if I need to do it, it’s my decision (to make) some speech. Only me, or the captain.

“It’s not a job of the owner to come to the dressing room and give some speech after the game, whether you win or you lose. But they know very well how they need to behave."

Defeat on Sunday made this Chelsea’s worst start to a league season for 45 years, with the team still struggling to convert possession and chances into goals – a feature that has carried over from last term.

“If you go back to the Liverpool game (on the opening weekend), I think no-one expected this situation," added Pochettino.

“The circumstances are (something) that sometimes you cannot manage, a little bit of bad luck. We can’t talk about excuses, but that is the circumstances and the reality.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on making 10 changes: "Whatever team I select, there will be those who believe I have made too many changes and those who think I have not made enough.

“As the players have shown already this season, they are prepared to work together and give everything no matter which names are on the back of our red shirts, so hopefully it will be exactly the same tonight.”
