Thibaut Courtois says he is "deeply disappointed" that head coach Domenico Tedesco said he had refused to travel with Belgium to Estonia for Tuesday's Euro 2024 qualifier.

On Monday, Tedesco said Courtois left the squad because he was "offended" after being overlooked for the captaincy against Austria on Saturday.

But the Real Madrid goalkeeper later denied "demanding" the armband.

He says he left the squad after the 1-1 draw with Austria due to a knee injury.

Back to Euro 2024 qualifying, Kylian Mbappe scored a retaken penalty as France beat Greece to maintain their perfect record.

The hosts, who are in the Republic of Ireland's qualifying group, were awarded a spot-kick after Konstantinos Mavropanos' awful challenge saw him kick the head of a jumping Antoine Griezmann.

Odysseas Vlachodimos saved Mbappe's first effort, but some Greek defenders had entered the penalty area with Mbappe scoring the second chance.

Mavropanos was later sent off for bringing down Randal Kolo Muani.

The victory means France have won all four of their qualifying matches and have not conceded. They are top of Group B and six points clear of Greece, who have played a game fewer.

  4. Man City chairman's pledge follows Taylor contract extensionpublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 20 June 2023

Manchester City chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak's comments on the club's women's team follows last week's announcement that manager Gareth Taylor has signed a one-year contract extension with the Women's Super League club.

Taylor, whose previous deal had been set to expire this summer, took charge of the side in May 2020.

City finished fourth in the WSL last season.

"I'm very happy to be able to commit to City for another season, and 2023-24 is one that I'm so excited about," said 50-year-old Taylor.

Taylor, who won the FA Cup in 2020 and League Cup in 2022 with City, was under pressure at the start of last season after his side lost their first two WSL games and were beaten by Real Madrid in Champions League qualifying.

  5. Man City boss told to make women's team 'a priority' by his daughterpublished at 10:07 British Summer Time 20 June 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

After five Premier League titles in six seasons and a historic Treble in the campaign just ended, Manchester City's men's team are evidently in a good place.

However, their women's team missed out on Champions League qualification after finishing fourth in the Women's Super League, their worst performance since 2014.

This has not gone unnoticed by the daughter of City chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak.

"My daughter Lulu reminds me every day that the women’s team ‘has to be your focus’," Khaldoon said in his extended end-of-season interview with club media.

"She watches every game. And that tells me – it’s a great reminder for me and for all of us that the game has arrived.

"Our women’s team has always been again very consistent and we will look at this season as a positive in the sense that we were very competitive all the way until the end.

"We’re going to come back, we’re going to support the team. We have a commitment from the organisation to help this group to continue to grow."

  6. CFG 'not going to stop' - Khaldoonpublished at 10:02 British Summer Time 20 June 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Manchester City have published the second part of their extended end-of-season interview with chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak.

In it he discusses at length the expansion of the City Football Group, which now has 13 clubs and has moved into Italy and Brazil.

Not everyone is comfortable with the multi-club concept at a time when players are moving to Saudi Arabia, whose Public Investment Fund owns four major clubs domestically, in addition to Newcastle and questions are being asked over the involvement with Chelsea's owners, Clearlake Capital.

"We're not going to stop," said Khaldoon.

"We're going to keep going and we're going to keep investing and we're going to keep growing value and we're going to keep bringing happiness to every community and every club we have in the world and hopefully we’ll keep bringing success in every club and team we have around the world.

"It's been a great journey over the last 15 years, but I'm excited about the future and it's about now, the next 10, 15 years too.”

To recap, Kelly Chambers has left Reading after 16 years with the club as player and manager "to pursue new opportunities".

  8. Man Utd sale process 'embarrassing' - Nevillepublished at 09:51 British Summer Time 20 June 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has been talking about the club's ownership situation on BBC Radio Five Live.

Neville was typically forthright as the wait goes on to find out who - if anyone - the Glazers are going to sell to.

"Embarrassing," he said. "But it’s what they have done.

"They drag everything out, always in their best interests and not in the best interests of the football club.

"I thought it would be dealt with quite quickly after the end of the season. But there is no news.

"The idea of Manchester United fans not being updated by the owners on an ownership sale is not good enough but fitting with the Glazers' ownership and how they have operated for 20 years now."

With Reading reverting to part-time status, it felt only a matter of time before Kelly Chambers' departure was confirmed because she has proven her worth as a WSL manager on several occasions and is held in high respect among those in the game.

It is understood West Ham, who are seeking a new manager, have reached out to Chambers to express their interest, while Tottenham and Women's Championship club Crystal Palace are also on the look-out for a new head coach.

Chambers is due to give birth to her second child any day now but she took just two weeks off work last time and could do the same again.

First team coach Phil Cousins, who has worked alongside Chambers in the WSL, is said to be favourite to take over at Reading, at least for the summer while they look to build a squad to compete in the Championship.

"A player and a coach before becoming the manager and a valued and dedicated member of senior management within the structure of the club, Chambers has been a pioneer at the pinnacle of women’s sport, championing women’s football at every turn and standing strong at the very heart of its rapid growth," said the club in a statement.

This is a huge blow to Reading at a concerning time for the women's team following their relegation from the WSL and the move to a part-time model.

During her time at Reading she became a figure of hope, guiding the team to WSL safety on numerous occasions when they were battling against clubs with bigger financial sway.

She was in tears as Reading's eventual relegation was confirmed on the final day of this season and many feared then she would be considering her future.

The club added that it would shortly be advertising "a role similar to the one Kelly is vacating" before the start of the Championship season in August.

As pleased as Scotland will be after winning their opening three games to top Group A in European Championship qualifying, Georgia, who travel to Hampden Park tonight, will be just as delighted with their exploits.

Georgia have never qualified for a major international competition but they have collected four points from their opening two games, drawing with Norway and beating Cyprus.

They are spearheaded by Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who scored 12 and assisted 13 to help the Italian club lift the Serie A title in 2022-23.

The 22-year-old has scored 10 goals in 21 appearances for his national side.

Former France international Willy Sagnol manages Georgia and he has no shortage of exciting young talent to work with.

Georges Mikautadze, 22, scored 24 goals and laid on nine assists to help Mez win promotion to Ligue 1, while goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, 22, is fresh from winning the Valencia fans' player of the year award.

It's also looking a big ask for Northern Ireland to qualify for Euro 2024 in Germany.

Michael O'Neill's men appeared to be on course for a goalless draw at home against Kazakhstan last night, but an 88th-minute goal from Abat Aimbetov sealed a 1-0 win for the visitors.

Northern Ireland have lost each of their last three European Championship qualifiers 1-0 and they sit fifth in Group H with just three points - trailing table-toppers Finland and second-placed Kazakhstan by six points.

O'Neil was without several senior players due to injury but he's hopeful they can provide a big boost during the next international break in September.

O'Neill said: "To concede the way we do at that stage of the game, it's heartbreaking really.

"The games in September will be difficult, a big test and big challenge for us but that is what it is about.

"You have to go away to difficult places and we will go there, will hopefully a little bit more strength in our squad than we've had in the opening two international windows. We will hopefully have Corry Evans back, I'm not sure about Stuart Dallas or Steven Davis."
