Wales fell to a 2-0 defeat in their European Championship qualififer against Turkey as Umut Nayir and Arda Guler scored for the hosts at Samsun 19 May Stadium.

It was looking mostly positive for Wales until Joe Morrell went high into a challenge with Ferdi Kadioglu and was shown a straight red card by referee Fabio Maresca on 41 minutes.

A man light, Wales struggled to compete and the loss leaves them sitting fourth in Group D with just four points from four fixtures.

Boss Rob Page, however, insists there is still a long way to go in the qualification process and is refusing to give up.

"There are loads of points to play for," said Page.

"Armenia beat Latvia tonight and I think both teams are capable of picking points up.

"We just have to have the mentality now that we have to win every game to give ourselves a chance."

There was no shortage of praise for Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka, 21, following his hat-trick for England in the 7-0 win against North Macedonia.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate was leading the chorus and he revealed Saka had been dealing with an Achille problem in the build-up to the European Championship qualifier.

"I'm delighted for him," he said. "He's had it for a few weeks and it's an injury that just needs managing, but it would have been easy not to appear.

"I think when you then have probably one of the best nights of your life, it's a reminder to everybody that it's worth going through those things.

"He works incredibly hard. He's talented, he's humble, he's hugely popular with all of the players and all of the staff - and I have to say his finishing has been like that all week."

England are well on their way to Euro 2024 in Germany after easing to a 7-0 win against North Macedonia at Old Trafford last night.

The Three Lions have won all four of their qualifying games and they sit six points clear of Ukraine at the top of Group C.

Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka, 21, was the star, netting a hat-trick to take his overall tally for the national side to 11 goals in 28 appearances.

"I will probably frame the match ball but I'll probably hold it in my arms for a few days first," Saka told BBC Radio 5.

"It's a special night, a big win and [to score] a first hat-trick is really special.

"I don't remember the last time I scored three, even at junior levels. It's a decent scoring record but there is always room for improvement."

Northern Ireland suffered a sorry, late 1-0 home defeat by Kazakhstan to leave their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2024 severely dented.

A breakaway 88th-minute goal by substitute Abat Aimbetov gave the visitors an unlikely victory.

Craig Cathcart and George Saville missed first-half headers for the injury-hit hosts, with substitute Conor McMenamin going close late on.

Northern Ireland, toothless for large parts, remain fifth in Group H.

    Turkey 2-0 Wales

Wales' hopes of reaching Euro 2024 took another huge blow as Turkey left it late before sealing a 2-0 win against the 10-man visitors in Samsun.

The Wales defence came under heavy criticism after its performance against Armenia on Friday, and it looked like they had been caught out once more when Chris Mepham turned the ball into his own net after nine minutes - only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside.

It was looking like a mostly positive half for Wales until Joe Morrell, one of two changes made for Wales, went high into a challenge with Ferdi Kadioglu and was shown a straight red card by referee Fabio Maresca.

Umut Nayir rose between Wales defenders to head home the opener and it was another substitute, Arda Guler, who put the result beyond doubt as he curled a superb effort from the edge of the Wales box into the top corner.

Victory leaves Turkey in pole position in Group D, while Wales could already be staring down the barrel of the play-offs if they are to reach Euro 2024.

Bukayo Saka scored the first hat-trick of his career as England made it four wins out of four Euro 2024 qualifiers by thrashing North Macedonia at Old Trafford.

Gareth Southgate's side are well on course to qualify for the tournament in Germany next summer and, even though North Macedonia provided meagre opposition, England still demonstrated the dazzling array of attacking options they have at their disposal.

And at the heart of it all was Arsenal's Saka who struck a superb treble before departing to a standing ovation with the game won.

Captain Harry Kane chipped in with a brace, while Marcus Rashford and Kalvin Phillips also got their names on the scoresheet.
