Wales really stood up to the challenge they worked really hard defensively, the gaps between units have been really solid, organised and compact and that is why we are being successful defensively.

There was a bit of a bombshell during the USA's news conference yesterday as the legendary Megan Rapinoe revealed she will be retiring at the end of this season.

The 2019 Ballon d'Or winner made the announcement days before she leaves for her fourth Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

"I did want to do it my own way," the 38-year-old said.

"I feel very grateful that I'm here and that I have the trust of this team and that my body has held up this long."

Wales could hand a debut to forward Mary McAteer tonight, and it's been a busy few days for the 19-year-old.

McAteer joined Championship side Sunderland on Wednesday, signing a one-year deal after leaving Coventry United at the end of last season.

She's already represented Wales at under-19 level, so a first senior cap in San Jose would cap off a memorable week for the teenager.

One concern for Wales at the end of that first half was the fact that Carrie Jones was on the ground receiving treatment when referee Karen Hernandez brought the half to a close.

That will be one to watch. Wales will have their fingers crossed Jones will be fit enough to play after the break.

A highly creditable performance from Wales in their first game against the four-time world champions.

The USA have dominated possession as you'd expect but genuine chances have been at a premium for the hosts, thanks to dogged Welsh defending.

Wales need to defend the second ball better.

Andi Sullivan has had a busy few minutes!

After creating a couple of chances from free-kicks, this time the USA player heads over from a corner.

There will be four minutes of added time in this half.

The free-kicks are beginning to pile up for the USA as the first half nears its conclusion.

It's Sullivan again to take, this time from the left. Wales clear, but only as far as Sophia Smith, whose low shot is deflected wide for a corner.

Sullivan's next free-kick is much better, swung invitingly towards the back post where Ashley Sanchez heads over from close range.

That was a good chance for the hosts.

Andi Sullivan has a free-kick for the USA in a semi-decent position 40 yards out but just lofts it harmlessly into the arms of Wales keeper Olivia Clark.

Not long for Wales to hold out until half-time.

We haven't seen enough of the likes of Ceri Holland, Hannah Cain, Carrie Jones on the ball.

They are the players you want in possession to get you higher up the pitch.

Alyssa Thompson on the USA's left flank has pace to burn but she makes a bad decision on her latest foray forward, blasting way over from a tight angle.

Wales are making themselves a nuisance for the USA and they almost carve the world champions open.

Ceri Holland finds herself in a good position on the right flank but her low cross just evades her team-mates.

Wales need to regroup and not be afraid to keep possession of the ball and play a few passes.

Every time they get the ball they are looking to play it long and there's nobody up there.

Wales need to believe in themselves a little bit more.
