Check this out for a fact: this match will mark the first time Wales have ever played a women's international fixture outside Europe.

Quite a few players in the Wales squad - captain Angharad James, Jess Fishlock and Ceri Holland among them - have played domestic football in the USA, though.

We wanted to be at the World Cup, we want to test our game plan, we want to make sure we leave this game knowing more about ourselves.

To play against the back-to-back world champions is the type of game we want.

We know in the Nations League we will need to adapt so this game gives us a chance to test ourselves and we will know more about ourselves as a team moving out of this game.

There are quite a few Wales players on the move this summer. One of them is defender Rhiannon Roberts, who has signed for Real Betis.

After tonight's game, the 32-year-old will turn her attention to the Spanish top flight, having left Liverpool for a two-year deal at Betis.

"I think I'd been at Liverpool a bit too long," Roberts said.

"Real Betis is something new for me. I am excited to go and play a new style of football and I am excited to test myself against the best and to get on the ball a little bit.

"I wanted to try something different - embrace a new culture and learn a new language. I am looking forward to every part of it."

We know how relentless and ruthless the USA are in attack, they recover really quickly but with a quick counter attack that is where Wales will be successful this evening.

They are not invincible there are ways we can exploit them.

It used to be catastrophic if you heard Jess Fishlock wasn't available for a Wales game, it's not quite the case anymore.

Jess is the greatest player Wales has ever produced but now she has other fantastic athletes around her such as Angharad James, Sophie Ingle Hayley Ladd.

  13. Fishlock blow for Walespublished at 20:49 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

    USA v Wales (21:00 BST)

It's a blow for Wales - and for this game in general in terms of a spectacle - that the visitors will be without their most capped player Jess Fishlock.

Wales had hoped the midfielder could feature for OL Reign on Friday in the National Women's Soccer League and still play a part against the US.

But she was forced off early in Reign's 1-0 loss to Orlando Pride.

Fishlock, 36, went down off the ball in the 23rd minute and received treatment to her hamstring for several minutes before being replaced by Nikki Stanton.

As a result, she'll play no part for her country tonight.

What about Wales' opponents tonight then?

Four-time world champions, stellar talents everywhere you look: the USA are simply the best team on the planet.

In Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, they boast two of the world's most recognisable athletes, never mind two of the best footballers around.

Rapinoe, Morgan and defender Kelley O’Hara are set to play in their fourth successive World Cup, while goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and midfielder Julie Ertz are preparing for their third in a row.

Wales know they're up against it in San Jose. This is the toughest challenge they've faced yet.

The 26-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Women's Super League title contenders following her departure from Reading.

"It's a massive honour to sign [for United]," said Evans, who starts tonight's game.
