Portugal earned a face off with reigning champions United States for a place in the Women's World Cup last 16 with an impressive win over Vietnam.

The debutants earned their maiden win via their first World Cup goals, scored by Telma Encarnacao and Kika Nazareth.

Portugal will progress to the knockout stages if they cause a giant upset and beat four-time winners the USA.

Vietnam are eliminated from the World Cup after this loss at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton, New Zealand.

Portugal play the United States in their final Group E match on Tuesday at 08:00 BST, while Vietnam will seek their first World Cup point and goal against Netherlands at the same time.

  3. 'Strange penalties were missed by VAR'published at 10:36 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

    Jen Beattie
Former Scotland defender on ITV 1

We've seen how strict VAR has been in the tournament so far and it shouldn't matter the result or the state of the game, a penalty is a penalty.

There was an almost rugby tackle in the first half that wasn't given and handball in the second half from the corner too. Portugal were unfortunate not to get either.

  4. 'Game was in Portugal's hands from very early on'published at 10:34 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

The game was over in the first half.

It was an uphill battle for Vietnam from the start of the second half onwards.

For Portugal it became a case of "I want to score at a World Cup", with plenty of long range shots from across the pitch.

Portugal knew the game was in their hands and it didn't really get going after half time.

They can build on the momentum now having gotten their first World Cup win and goals. Obviously they will be cautious with them having USA up next but this result will be huge for confidence.

    FT: Portugal 2-0 Vietnam

Portugal probably need to cause a massive shock and beat reigning world champions United States if they are to qualify.

Vietnam are out and, on today's evidence, expect them to be thrashed by the Netherlands.

The Dutch will be looking for goals as they push to win the group.

Portugal get their first ever win at a Women's World Cup to keep their hopes of advancing alive, although they will need to be much more clinical with their chances against the United States.

Vietnam were absolutely overpowered, but, somehow, only conceded the two goals - scored by Telma Encarnacao and Francisca Nazareth.

That's played two, lost two for Vietnam are they will not be advancing. They will be hoping to avoid a hiding and maybe sneak a goal in their last game against the Netherlands.

This one was done and dusted after 21 minutes. Portugal win it.

At times they have been lucky to not perhaps concede a third and a fourth, but Vietnam have been better and not quite as out of shape after half time.

Portugal just haven't stepped up that intensity and made their dominance count in terms of the scoresheet.

Should be a third. Ana Borges makes a fine surge to ghost past a couple of Vietnam players and her cross finds substitute Andreia Norton but she can only send her header wide.

For the second time, Joana Marchao hits the woodwork, with her free-kick, which may well have been an overhit cross, bouncing off the bar.

Portugal are starting to progress to that next level in women's international football now.

They aren't content to just take a 2-0 win, they want to score more goals and dominate teams ranked below them.

They are looking to be in control and to win well.

    Portugal 2-0 Vietnam

Portugal are 13 minutes plus injury time away from their first-ever win at a Women's World Cup, so they can't be too disappointed with the result.

However, five, six or seven goals would have been a better reflection of their dominance.

  14. 'Improved second half from Vietnam'published at 10:04 British Summer Time 27 July 2023

Vietnam will have come into this World Cup to learn and improve.

And they have certainly been better in this second half, have been firmer at the back.

The Netherlands will be watching this thinking they could have a field day against Vietnam in their last group match.

The Dutch drew 1-1 with reigning world champions the USA earlier on today, to leave Group E in the balance with both sides level on four points.

USA only beat Vietnam 3-0, so the Netherlands will be looking to go goal crazy to potentially win the group.

Not too sure how Portugal don't have a third goal - Jessica Silva has a couple of attempts, Joana Marchao shoots against the top of the left-hand post, with Kim Thanh then pushing an effort over the top.

That's already six saves made today by the Vietnam keeper.

In the first half Portugal did everything right, played as though they were facing a top team, but they are just getting a bit carried away now.

A better option for Marchao would have been to cross the ball, she had plenty of options in the box.

It seems everyone is thinking about getting their name on the scoresheet.
