Former Ballon d'Or winner Ada Hegerberg made her only start of the tournament in Norway's opening defeat against New Zealand.

If she can come on, she has to come on.

Japan now have the opportunity to just sit back, let Norway have possession if they want to.

Norway have shown they have the character to come back from a goal down - it will be interesting how fit Ada Hegerberg is, if they need her, if they bring her on.

Boe Risa's pass didn't make it to her team-mate and Shimizu was there to pounce.

A tough, tough opening to the second half for Norway - a big goal for Japan.

    Norway gift Japan another!

Yui Hasegawa collects the ball in the box but when her pass is intercepted it looks as if Japan's chance has gone.

But Norway midfielder Vilde Boe Risa gives the ball away in the box straight to Risa Shimizu whose shot deflects in off Ingrid Engen.

Norway have been happy to let Japan have the ball - but Japan haven't been able to make the most of that possession because of Norway's shape.

You would say Japan have controlled the game without causing too many problems for Norway.

Hasegawa has been a standout as you would expect - and I think it will become more and more difficult for Norway if they allow Japan to keep dictating.

Having said that they did exceptionally well to get back level after going behind.

  14. Spain hit five to reach quarter-finalspublished at 09:59 British Summer Time 5 August 2023

    FT: Switzerland 1-5 Spain

    Neil Johnston
    BBC Sport at Eden Park

In Saturday's earlier match Spain reached the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup for the first time after producing an outstanding display of firepower in Auckland to send Switzerland out.

La Roja were beaten 4-0 in their final group game by Japan five days earlier in Wellington but bounced back in style to score four times during a dominant first half showing in front of 43,217 - a record crowd for a football match in New Zealand.

Aitana Bonmati swept the Spanish ahead before Switzerland equalised when Laia Codina, without looking up, hit a back pass past her own keeper and into the net from 10 yards inside her own half.

Spain soon restored their lead through Alba Redondo's header before Barcelona midfielder Bonmati produced a classy finish to make it 3-1.

In an incredible opening half, Codina made up for her own goal by adding Spain's fourth after a scramble inside the box.

They added another after half-time through Jennifer Hermoso's clinical finish - her third goal of this tournament.

While some of the quarter-final spots are being decided today, England have to wait until Monday for their showdown with Nigeria.

There was a training session at Central Coast Stadium this morning and midfielder Katie Zelem will speak to the media shortly.

Zelem was one of those called up to the starting XI to cover for injured Keira Walsh's absence and impressed against China.

Will England play the same system with a back three which worked so well in that match or will they shake things up?

Zelem will also take on BBC Sport's Jo Currie in the darts competition which is 1-1 at the moment.

Alex Greenwood beat Talksport's Courtney Sweetman-Kirk before ITV's Katie Shanahan's got the better of Rachel Daly.

Nail-biting stuff for Norway fans now as Japan prod the ball around just outside their opponent's box.
