  9. Hayes calls for WSL expansionpublished at 18:40 British Summer Time 8 October 2023

Chelsea Head Coach Emma HayesImage source, Getty Images

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes wants the Women's Super League to be increased to 18 teams.

The league is currently comprised of 12 teams, meaning each club plays a 22-match campaign.

Chelsea, the defending champions, won last season's title by two points but Hayes says an increase in teams would boost the "unpredictability" of the league.

"It's time to grow. It's time to go from 12 to 16 or 18 teams," she said.

"Lots of people said we weren't at our best last season but we had a record points total to win the league.

"There is more unpredictability than ever [in the WSL]. The opening game demonstrates that. The question we should be asking is when are we going to make our league a bit bigger?"

We know each season that more and more clubs are investing in their women's teams and the standard of the WSL has gone through the roof.

There are more global superstars, players from across Europe and the rest of the world are coming to play in the league.

It is really important that teams start to push the traditional top four, the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and now Manchester United.

The more competitive the league gets the better the game becomes for everyone.

  11. 'Anybody can beat anybody on their day - that's exciting'published at 18:34 British Summer Time 8 October 2023

    Gilly Flaherty
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

We want competition. We don't just want the same two, three teams fighting it out. We want the upsets.

We had Liverpool beating Arsenal last weekend, as they did on the opening weekend last year [when they beat Chelsea 2-1]. Those are the results we want to see.

The more money that comes into the league, the more players that come over to play in our league, the more we strengthen.

No game is a given anymore. Anybody can beat anybody on their day and that is exciting.

Liverpool v Aston Villa (18:45 BST)

    • Liverpool won 1-0 against Arsenal on MD1 of this season’s WSL. The Reds last won their opening two WSL games in a season in the 2017 Spring Series under Scott Rogers.
    • Aston Villa’s Rachel Daly has been involved in 11 goals in her last six away WSL appearances (eight goals, three assists), scoring or assisting at least once in all six. The only English player to have a hand in at least one goal in seven consecutive away appearances is Nikita Parris (eight between September 2018 and March 2019 for Man City).
    • Aston Villa’s Adriana Leon came off the bench to assist Rachel Daly’s goal in their 2-1 defeat by Man Utd on MD1. She’s made 49 WSL appearances and could become the third Canadian to make 50, after Jessie Fleming (56) and Shelina Zadorsky (54).
    • Liverpool have won five of their last seven Women’s Super League games (L2), although they did lose 1-0 to Man Utd most recently in May. The Reds haven’t conceded more than once in any of those seven games, although have let in exactly one goal in their last five.
