    Bristol City 0-1 Arsenal

Well, it hasn't been Arsenal's best start to the season and they'll be expected to win comfortably this evening, so that goal will just set the tone for them.

Bristol City will now need to avoid this turning into the same result as last week's 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City.

    Katie McCabe (7 mins)

A bit of a defensive mishap from Bristol City hands Katie McCabe the ball on the edge of the area and, as we have seen her do time and again, she drives onto her left foot and unleashes a thumping strike into the top right corner.

    She only scores beauties.

    Bristol City 0-0 Arsenal

Caitlin Foord does really well down the left-hand side and fires off a right-footed shot towards the near post.

Olivia Clark has to make a good save and that might just serve as a bit of a nerve settler for the debutant.

Arsenal look to get forward early on but Kim Little's through ball has too much on it for Alessia Russo.

Bristol City are already set up very defensively.

It's a massive challenge that Bristol City have got ahead of them.

Just looking at both teams, they need to get some momentum and the three points over the line before the international break. But the manner in which Arsenal turned the game around last week against Aston Villa will give them confidence coming into this match.

I think this is going to be a really tough night for Bristol City.

  8. 'Might as well give it our all'published at 18:44 British Summer Time 22 October 2023

Bristol City v Arsenal (18:45 BST)

Bristol City boss Lauren Smith speaking to Sky Sports:

On goalkeeper Olivia Clark's debut: "She's got the ability, she knows that she's a good keeper, she's number one for Wales and she's ready to step up. She's very much looking forward to the game."

On facing Arsenal: "It's a difficult one but when you're coming off the back of a game against Man City where you've lost 5-0, it's all to play for. At half-time last week we put some lines in the sand and moved on and it's an opportunity to move forward. You might as well give it all at this point."

  9. Positive signs for Gunnerspublished at 18:43 British Summer Time 22 October 2023

Bristol City v Arsenal (18:45 BST)

While the return of Beth Mead last week and Vivianne Miedema this week is a huge positive for Arsenal, they are still waiting on several others to return, including Laura Wienroither - who was running on the pitch for the first time this week - and England captain Leah Williamson.

Last season was a torrid one when it came to Arsenal's injury list so they will be pleased to be finally seeing some players up and moving again.

  10. Pick of the statspublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 22 October 2023

Bristol City v Arsenal (18:45 BST)

    • Bristol City have lost their last five WSL matches (final two in 2020-21, first three this season). The Robins haven’t lost six games in a row since April 2018.
    • Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa was only the third time in WSL history a side has won a game when they were trailing going into the 90th minute, along with Everton vs Liverpool (August 2012) and Reading vs Leicester (October 2022).
    • Bristol City have shipped 12 goals in their opening three WSL matches this season – it’s the most by a team at this stage of a season since the Robins themselves conceded 16 goals in 2020-21.
  11. Record crowd at Ashton Gatepublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 22 October 2023

Bristol City v Arsenal (18:45 BST)

A record crowd of more than 10,500 fans are expected for this one and the Robins will hope to be able to put on a show for them.

They are winless so far in the WSL but a big home crowd against a not-yet firing Arsenal could be the time to get off the mark.

Arsenal’s Beth Mead assisted their winning goal in the 2-1 win over Aston Villa last time out, her first appearance since last November.

Mead has assisted 12 winning goals in the WSL, with only Karen Carney doing so more often in WSL history (13).

  14. Gunners lacking potencypublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 22 October 2023

Bristol City v Arsenal (18:45 BST)

This is a bit of a weird stat...

Arsenal have had the most shots (63) and faced the fewest (23) in the WSL this season.

But, the Gunners have only scored with 6.4% of their efforts at goal, while their opponents have a conversion rate of 17.4%.

Remember, that win against Aston Villa last week was Arsenal's first of the season. But clearly, not for a lack of trying.

They have been missing some potency but with Beth Mead back in the side, Arsenal fans will be hoping to see some of that delightful link-up play between her and England team-mate Alessia Russo.

    Arsenal

Arsenal picked up their first win of the season with that late comeback to beat Aston Villa 2-1 last weekend and they were boosted by the return of England international Beth Mead from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

There is plenty of positivity in the Gunners camp as they prepare for Sunday's fixture with newly promoted Bristol City - Leah Williamson has been encouraging karaoke at the training ground.

Manager Jonas Eidevall revealed Williamson has brought in a karaoke machine, but the Swedish boss insisted he is not a fan of ABBA when asked about his music taste - and he is "more of a Johnny Cash" man.

"I have not had a go!" said Eidevall. "It tried to come into the medical room a couple of times, but they have been doing some strong defence to try and get it out so it doesn't disturb the treatments.

"But we get to spread joy in other rooms in the building. Sometimes you need a spark in something. You need to start with a laugh. That's why Leah is a great leader."

  17. Miedema back after 11 monthspublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 22 October 2023

Bristol City v Arsenal (18:45 BST)

So, the big news out of those line-ups is that Netherlands striker Vivianne Miedema is back in the Arsenal squad for the first time in almost 11 months.

She ruptured her ACL against Lyon in the Champions League in December last year, just two weeks after Beth Mead picked up the same injury.

Miedema has been back in first team training for a few weeks and manager Jonas Eidevall said earlier this week she could return to the fold.

    Good news for the Gunners.

  18. Team news - Mead & Miedema on Gunners benchpublished at 18:18 British Summer Time 22 October 2023

Bristol City v Arsenal (18:45 BST)

Bristol City boss Lauren Smith makes three changes from their 5-0 thrashing by Manchester City last week.

Loanee Kaylan Marckese is not involved against her parent club, so Olivia Clark starts in goal, while 16-year-old Yasmin Davies is named as their back-up goalkeeper.

Sille Struck and Chloe Mustaki are also on the bench, with Ella Powell and Ffion Morgan getting the nod.

Bristol City XI: Clark, Powell, Layzell, Aspin, Napier, Morgan, Connolly, Rodgers, Furness, Jones, Thestrup.

Subs: Struck, Hayles, Mustaki, Bull, Syme, Teisar, Ward, Murray, Davies.

Jonas Eidevall makes two changes to his Arsenal side that scraped a last-minute win against Aston Villa last week.

Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema are both on the bench, with the former having made her return last weekend and the latter potentially doing so tonight after 11 months out.

Defender Laia Codina starts while Amanda Ilestedt isn't in the squad and Frida Maanum is replaced by Victoria Pelova.

Arsenal XI: Zinsberger, Catley, Wubben-Moy, Codina, Maritz, Walti, Little, Foord, Pelova, McCabe, Russo.

Subs: Mead, Miedema, Beattie, Maanum, D'Angelo, Kuhl, Cooney-Cross, Lacasse, Blackstenius.
