Luton won their last top-flight home game in April 1992, a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa. The Hatters are unbeaten in their last eight at Kenilworth Road in the top division (W5 D3), with West Ham the last side to beat them (1-0 in January 1992).

  2. 'A tall order to stay up'published at 19:26 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Luton v West Ham (20:00 BST)

    Chris Sutton
    Former Chelsea striker

I always think Luton staying in the Premier League is going to be a tall order. They've had a difficult start. It's their first home game in the league because they needed to get their stadium up to scratch.

West Ham are off to an absolute flyer. Not many people saw them beating Brighton and they did it with 22% possession. I don't think this will be straightforward but I think West Ham will win the game.

    Sutton's prediction: 0-2

  3. A great statpublished at 19:25 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Luton v West Ham (20:00 BST)

Luton's starting XI has made a combined 320 Premier League appearances prior to tonight - 233 of which have been from Ross Barkley. That's 25 fewer than West Ham's James Ward-Prowse (345) had made on his own coming into this evening's game.

That shows you how young this team is in terms of Premier League nous.

West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen joined BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club earlier this week to discuss the Hammers' fine start to the season.

He explained how he feels manager David Moyes does not get the credit he deserves, stating: "When I joined, they were in a relegation battle.

"He kept the club up, then we had two seasons of finishing sixth and seventh, getting to a Europa League semi-final, going all the way and winning the Conference League.

"What he has done for the club probably doesn't get enough credit. But that's just noise. The players respect the manager, respect his ways."

Doesn't every neutral wish Luton all the best for the coming season? After their meteoric fall to non league football and then a fantastic return to the PL. An inspiration to any lower league club.

  8. 'Culture comes before success'published at 19:16 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Luton v West Ham (20:00 BST)

    Luton Town

Luton Town's chief executive Gary Sweet on Sky Sports: "The higher we go, the more we've got to spend. We've got a lot of good kit. We have got a new gym and a lot of new facilities. In a lot of areas we are prepared. We do it the Luton way. We have got a process of how we do everything here.

"When we got promoted from the Championship we were bottom in terms of budget and we are not concerned with spending as much as everyone else. We think our pound is worth more than anyone else's."

On the growth of Luton beyond this year: "The one thing that I am most nervous about is culture. We have a great culture here and it reflects the town and is very charitable. The culture is epitomised by the stadium. The new stadium has got to do that as well. Success does not come first, culture comes first. If you don't keep the culture, success doesn't follow.

"We are aiming to start [the new stadium] at the end of this calendar year."

Would you turn down a £150m offer for one of your players? "Never. Not a chance! I would walk that one!

"One of the things we are aiming to do here is develop players. Buy low and sell on. That is how football clubs like us grow. We have a vision of how we develop players. Every player we bring in, they all get better."

Defender Teden Mengi swapped Manchester United for Luton Town on Thursday, ending his stay with the club that he joined when he was six.

Teden Mengi said the move was a "no brainer" - saying "I’d been at Manchester United all my life; I’ve seen people come and go and I was the last of my age group to leave. While it’s sad to leave United, it’s an exciting time.

"I just had to be real with myself and ask what’s going to be best for me. Stay and fight with United or go somewhere else and look for an opportunity? In the end I was honest with myself and took that option.

"Making Luton my home was a no brainer and taking on that challenge as I’ve never lived outside of Manchester is something I’m looking forward to.

"Even before they got promoted the team were doing well. I like the way they play and with five at the back I feel I could fit in very well. After speaking to the manager, I feel as though I’ve got a good chance of making an impression here."

He's not in the squad tonight but I'm sure he'll be there to enjoy history being made...

  11. 'Luton love a fight - and so do West Ham'published at 19:08 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Luton v West Ham (20:00 BST)

West Ham striker Michail Antonio is anticipating a tight game against Luton but is hopeful of getting the three points required to put the Hammers back on top of the table.

Victory at Brighton on Saturday briefly catapulted David Moyes' side to the summit of the Premier League and they can leapfrog Manchester City once more with a win at Kenilworth Road.

"It's going to be a really hard game on a small pitch," Antonio told the Footballer's Football Podcast. "You see the way they press and the way they run around - it's quite crazy.

"They love a fight as well so it will be physical. I like a physical game and West Ham do as well.

"I think it'll be good. We've had a positive start to the season and this is the first game of the Premier League for this weekend. It's a chance for us to end up top of the table again."

Three weeks ago, Brighton seemed to be leading the race for Ajax forward Mohammed Kudus.

We all know how that worked out with David Moyes and West Ham snapping up the talented Ghana international on Sunday, ironically after beating Brighton in the Premier League a day earlier.

BBC Radio Sussex got the inside track on Kudus from Ghanaian journalist Rahman Osman on their Albion Unlimited podcast earlier this month: "He has played as a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder and then last season he was played as a forward or a false nine and performed really well. He has all the tools needed to adapt to the Premier League.

"He is so good in small spaces and is both efficient and effective. If fans can remember Samir Nasri, he is like a quicker version of him. He is clearly not the finished article but can modify his game to be one of the greatest midfielders around.

"He is determined, strong and does not shy away from challenges. In fact, he comes alive when the lights are brighter. Last season, he was unbelievable against Liverpool in the Champions League and he clearly thrives in the big games.

"An exciting player, he is a quintessential great African player at the right age. And, not only he is a good player, he is also a promising human being. He understands what it requires to be a professional athlete and play the game at a level where you need more than just skill."

Having said there's more to Luton than the Oak Stand, I can't deny the interest. I first entered it as a fan over 25 years ago and it remains one of English football's great experiences.

The finishing touches have been added to Kenilworth Road in the last few weeks including the stand being newly sponsored and rebranded.

The ground also features a new-look Bobbers Stand after a £10m revamp to bring it up to league standards.

Visitors will notice the famous Oak Stand has been repainted as part of a sponsorship deal with Domino's Pizza, the gates emblazoned with the words "history is made in Luton".

Now known as the Domino's Oak Stand, it displays 1885 as the year the club was born, alongside 1985, when the pizza chain's first UK branch opened in the town.
