    Burnley 0-0 Aston Villa

It's a poor first corner from the home side. Hits the first man.

It leads to a rapid break from Villa through Mousa Diaby, who has impressed in the early games of his career in England. He carries the ball into the box but sees his low shot blocked.

Peter (13:56) would Wimbledon be exciting if we knew the champion at the start of the tournament? Would the football World Cup be as big if the winning team was known? There may be great games in the way, but the inevitability absolutely takes away from the spectacle.

    Sheffield United 0-0 Manchester City

    Andy Hinchcliffe
Former Man City and Everton defender on Sky Sports

It may make some difference that Pep Guardiola isn't here, but he will have ways to get his message across to the team and make changes if he wants to do so.

He will have done his tactical briefings and meetings with the team throughout the week.

The players know that even though he isn't here they will not be able to take it easy.

  5. Postpublished at 14:04 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    Sheffield United 0-0 Man City

Manchester City keep the ball for nearly three whole minutes before Jack Grealish loses his footing on the edge of the Blades area and the ball drifts out. The home side are going to have to be so disciplined in their shape and then use the ball well when they are lent it.

  6. Postpublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    Burnley 0-0 Aston Villa

Manuel Benson turns the volume up a notch by sliding in to win the ball in midfield, but he can't progress too far forward.

Soon after, there is a break in play as Douglas Luiz is down with a potential head injury. He's soon back up, though, much to the ire of the home fans.

It's been the weekend of the "smaller" team taking the lead and then having absolutely no idea how to defend it so I'll go United so score within 10 minutes and then lose 6-1.

Kyle Walker is captaining City at the home of his boyhood club today, what a special day for the England defender.

If you're just tuning in then Phil Foden, widely praised for his display last week, is on the bench. Little Pep roulette.

High pressing early on from Burnley, followed by a bit of stroking it around at the back. If you've not seen much of the Clarets since they were last in the Premier League, you may spot a few changes.

Should be plenty of goals in these.

It's Man City, they are Treble winners for a reason. They're hard to get the ball off and put under pressure.

It's going to be very tough afternoon for Sheffield United.

  12. Sutton's predictionpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

Burnley v Aston Villa (14:00 BST)

Chris Sutton's prediction opponent for this weekend's fixtures is Nothing But Thieves guitarist Joe Langridge-Brown, who is an Arsenal fan.

Burnley didn't have a game last week and this is a tough second fixture for them after losing to Manchester City on the opening day.

It is hard to judge them off the back of that, they were brave. But I think Aston Villa will have a bit too much nous for them and edge this one.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-2

    Joe's prediction: 1-1

Sheffield United v Manchester City (14:00 BST)

Sheffield United are in massive trouble. They sold their best player Iliman Ndiaye to Marseille and while they have brought a couple in, they will be in a fight.

They fought well against Nottingham Forest but lost late on and Crystal Palace beat them 1-0 on the opening day, but wiped the floor with them, it wasn't a close 1-0.

And now they have Manchester City in town, who I think will win 4-0.

    Sutton's prediction: 0-4

Joe's prediction: I am obviously hoping for a Blades win but I've got to pick up some points myself. 0-3

  16. Pick of the statspublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

Sheffield United v Manchester City (14:00 BST)

    • Man City have never lost a Premier League game against Sheffield United (W7 D3), with their last top-flight defeat against them coming in February 1992 (2-4 at Bramall Lane).
    • None of Sheffield United’s last 26 Premier League matches have ended as a draw (W7 L19) since a 1-1 draw with Brighton in December 2020. The last team to have a longer run were Arsenal between February and October 2022 (27 games in a row).
    • Manchester City have conceded just one goal in their 10 Premier League games against Sheffield United. Their clean sheet ratio of 90% against the Blades is the highest one team has against another in the competition (min. five meetings).
    • Gustavo Hamer scored on his Premier League debut for Sheffield United in their 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest. The only player to score in his first two Premier League appearances for the Blades is Brian Deane in their first two games in the competition in August 1992.
    • Julian Alvarez netted his 10th Premier League goal for Manchester City in their 1-0 win over Newcastle, with his last three goals all being the winning goal in the game. City have won all nine games when Alvarez has scored, with only Chris Smalling scoring in more Premier League games and ending on the winning side each time in Premier League history (11).
  17. Pick of the statspublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

Burnley v Aston Villa (14:00 BST)

    • After losing 5-1 to Newcastle in their first Premier League game this season, Aston Villa won 4-0 against Everton on matchday two. They are only the second team in top-flight history to lose their opening game by four or more goals then win their second game by four or more goals, after Burnley in 1925-26 (lost 10-0 vs Aston Villa then won 4-0 vs Leicester).
    • Burnley’s starting XI against Man City had an average age of just 23 years and 206 days, the youngest any team has named in the division this season.
    • None of the 16 players who appeared for the Clarets in the game were aged 30 or over - the first time Burnley hadn’t used a player over the age of 30 in a Premier League game.
    • Aston Villa central defender Pau Torres has progressed the ball upfield a distance of 399 metres with ball carries in the Premier League, the second-most of any player behind Crystal Palace’s Joachim Andersen (437m). His 40 progressive carries are also more than any other player has managed.

Perhaps with Pep missing from the touchline today the Man City players may just drop that little bit. It could be an oppportunity for Sheffield United to take advantage and cause a bit of an upset.

Sigh, yet again my fantasy team has fallen foul of Pep Guardiola and his infuriating, inexplicable changes. Foden best player on the pitch and wins the game for City; get out. Akanji one of the most consistent performers in defence since he arrived; sorry, we blew £77m on Gvardiol so he’s got to play now. Thanks Pep, I hate you

Former Sheffield United striker Carl Asaba won't write Sheffield United off in their game against champions Manchester City.

The Treble winners visit Bramall Lane on Sunday, and Asba told the Blades Heaven podcast that Paul Heckingbottom's side have a chance of pulling off a surprise result in front of their own fans: "It is Man City, but it’s Bramall Lane and it’s going to be a cup final for us.

"We have 36 cup finals to play, and you need to get the players in as soon as possible.

"You treat it as you're in the same division as the other club and any club on their day can win. Hecky [Paul Heckingbottom] is going out to win, he’s not going out to lose 5-0.

"We played them at Wembley in a semi-final of a cup and apart from an unfortunate penalty we gave a good account of ourselves first half. We're going to be at home and anything can happen. Don’t write us off.

"Man City are the best team in the world, they can come with complacency. The manager isn’t going to be there. One of the players just need to have an off day and do something silly, anything can happen

"To get further down the evolution of the squad he [Paul Heckingbottom] does need to concentrate that it’s a normal match. They've got to get the fitness up, the relationships on the pitch and learn the patterns of play. It’s an important match, what better an occasion to turn over the odds."
