  1. See you soonpublished at 19:41 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

The tough games don't stop for Newcastle, with Brighton and Brentford up next. I'm sure they will bounce back though.

That's all from us tonight, hope you've enjoyed the Bank Holiday football and can get out in the rain tomorrow and pretend to enjoy a day off work.

    See you later!

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking to Match of the Day: "That's a very tough one to take. Very similar emotions to this time last year when we lost late on to Liverpool, different circumstances of course, but the disappointment is the same. At the time that defeat was hugely painful, this one is exactly the same.

"We played really well today. Up until the sending off I thought we were magnificent. From that point onwards it was a different game, but we still had the chances to win that match."

On the journey the club are on: "Games like this happen, you have difficult moments and that is part of football. We must embrace that and understand it. Today we were on the wrong end of it, but we did have the chances to score.

"The lads committed everything to a good performance. Perhaps a criticism is that our passing slowed down when they went down to 10 men, we were not precise enough. Both goals equally as difficult to watch, particularly the first that bounced off Botman."

On changes made: "I thought the momentum was shifting in that moment and so I made the changes. In hindsight would I have made them? Maybe not. But I had to make the decision I thought best at the time."

On picking up the side after this defeat: "This team is very strong. There are going to be bumps on the road, today is a bump and we have to be strong enough to take it and bounce back."

To clarify, Virgil van Dijk will not get a three-match ban for his red card. Just one.

  5. 'Trent feels it'published at 19:28 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports: "First and foremost, I think when Trent gets a yellow card, it's a clear foul on him. The fourth official said so. There is no active contact from Virgil van Dijk. It is just going for the ball and on the way there, he made contact.

"For this contact, getting three games, oh my God, unbelievable. We will see. For today, it gave us the chance to create something really special. The boys put up a proper fight."

  6. 'Virgil's really thankful'published at 19:26 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports: "Virgil's really thankful. It's all good. Players came on, Jarell Quansah came on. Joe Gomez came on early and played a super game, I'm really happy for him. Endo has no clue on what we actually do. Macca and Dom as a double six were brilliant. Diogo made a super impact. Sometimes these kind of stories get written, obviously I would be much more happy if we can finish a game with 11."

New team: "For the moment, it's great. With 10 men in my history, I have never had something like that at Newcastle, in this stadium with that atmosphere, it is crazy. Next week it is, Aston Villa, they are strong like crazy."

  7. 'Twice we have lost by the narrowest of margins'published at 19:24 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-2 Liverpool

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to Sky Sports

On the possible Trent Alexander-Arnold red card: "You don't want to see players get sent off but I thought the ref got that one wrong. Two key moments, that and the Van Dijk red card, and the first one was wrong.

"We are not looking at that as being the reason why we didn't win the game, let's be clear that falls on our laps. But that moment was particularly frustrating for us."

On picking the players up after another defeat: "There will be a lot of emotion. For us we've had three really tough opening games, won one and lost two. The two we lost were lost by the narrowest of margins, and they were against the best two teams in the Premier League."

  8. 'Darwin was fired up'published at 19:23 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

    Darwin NunezImage source, Getty Images

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports: "It was much more difficult than the Barcelona game [in the Champions League]. Today was different. We didn't start the game well, we conceded a goal and got a red cardhad Then we played better. At half-time the feeling was there that something was possible. Nunez with a super performance. I don't think we needed too much luck. We calmed the game down and brought on Darwin, he was obviously fired up from not starting. We had really good football moments. It was a super mature performance."

On Darwin Nunez: "I understand the question, it's clear he's not happy. It's early in the season, we need to find stability and results. He will play, there's no doubt about that. We need everyone. We need to find a way of playing. This is a new team with new key players. It needs time. He scores two goals and can't get the smile off his face. For the team, it was super important. You need these things together. You cannot force it. I enjoyed that in the last second."

  9. 'We should have put the game to bed'published at 19:21 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-2 Liverpool

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to Sky Sports: "There was a lot of good. We should have put the game to bed and that is probably the thing we are all kicking ourselves with. We had a lot of chances and goalmouth action. Their goalkeeper made one of the best saves that I have seen live from Almiron and it just wasn't to be for us.

"There were moments there for us. We needed the second goal because Liverpool are dangerous, they are bringing world class players on from the bench. It only takes a chance, even with 10 men, and they are a really good counter-attacking team.

"We were unlucky with their first goal. it hit Sven's [Botman] heel and lands perfectly for Nunez and it is a great finish. Those are the small things that go against you sometimes."

On playing against 10 men: "Sometimes football is like that and you play better against 10 than 11. It wasn't our intention for us to slow down or lose momentum, but Liverpool down to 10 men then become content to let you have the ball in front of them. There's less space, and it was tough for us to break them down.

"Our message at half time was to keep the same intent and to try and score again, to put the game to bed. The moments and chances were there right until the end but we lacked the killer instinct.

"Then to a degree the later the game goes it's on a knife edge, one moment can hurt you and that's what happened."

Liverpool have been Manchester City's biggest rivals for the last few years before Arsenal came to the fore last year - why can't they be that team again this season? That squad now isn't good enough to challenge Manchester City but they've got to go for it this week in the window.

Trent Alexander-Arnold should have had a second yellow card early on, he got lucky. He then made a mistake for the Newcastle goal, his head was scrambled but he came into the game. Liverpool were celebrating like they've won the league today, that shows what a big result this was.

Newcastle were in complete control in the first half, I was so impressed with them. The only thing they didn't do is get the second goal and if you don't do that in the Premier League you'll get punished.

Poor game management from Howe. Tonali and Gordon should've stayed on. Why we didn't go for it when they went down to 10 I'll never know. Small team mentality is not what got us competing with the big boys.

Liverpool keeper Alisson speaking to Sky Sports: "You cannot underestimate Liverpool, even in a game like that. When we played them last season they had a man sent off and it was still very hard to play against 10 men.

"When you play as a unit you can do so many things on the pitch. You can make it smaller, slow the play down. We always believed we were going to have chances. We always believed that we were capable of doing something here tonight and we did. A game for history, one of a kind."

On recording a personal record number of saves in the game: "It was that many really? I am here for these moments, this is part of football and my job. I am there for the team and they are there to help me prevent the opponent from having chances.

"Today was about passion and believing to the end. After the performance against Bournemouth where we played over 30 minutes without Maca [Mac Allister] we showed what we can do with 10 men. We have to take this forward now, focus in every moment and be at that high level, and do it with 11 players.

"There has been so much talk around our team and how we are not happy with the transfer window, please do not put words in our mouths. We are happy, we are together and showed it today."

Since Darwin Nunez came to the club it hasn't gone to plan, he's the fifth attacker really.

But he has the mentality when he misses, it doesn't affect him. He keeps making the runs and gets in there.
