Burnley have had a busy summer with the ink running dry in that signature pen, but can they squeeze a bit more juice out of it before next Friday?

The Clarets have brought in 11 new faces - 13 if you include loan deals being made permanent - and they will be ones to keep a close eye on in the remaining days of the window.

The acquisition of a new left-back is believed to be high on the list of priorities, as is a proven centre forward - the most difficult thing to find in football.

  2. 'I'm convinced we've got the next £100m player in our team'published at 13:20 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

Burnley v Aston Villa (14:00 BST)

People may not be expecting huge things from Burnley from this season, but Vincent Kompany sure has faith in the squad.

The Clarets boss says he believes he has "the next £100m player" in his squad.

Kompany has overseen an overhaul of the Burnley squad during the summer following the club's promotion from the Championship.

He said: "I tell our players I'm convinced we've got the next £100m player in our team somewhere. I don't know which one but there's going to be one of them that's going to make this jump."

Such an influx of players provides Kompany a positive selection headache, with the former Belgium defender adding: "I would love it to be as tricky as possible.

"We as a club embrace competition, we feel that this is the way that you get progress and development. The players are really together and helping each other get better."

Go on then, start making your predictions for who that £100m Burnley player might be?

A miserable day in Burnley is brightened up by the football team returning to Premier League action after a weekend off last time out.

Vincent Kompany's men suffered a 3-0 defeat in the opening game of the new campaign and saw their second match at Luton postponed because of ongoing works at Kenilworth Road.

The Belgian was pleased to get more minutes on the training field and has urged patience, stressing his young side will improve as the season goes on.

Today they face an in-form Aston Villa side who have recovered from their opening game thrashing at Newcastle by taking it out on Everton and Scottish side Hibernian, scoring nine goals without conceding.

Hands down the best game I've seen live was Sheffield Wednesday v Peterborough second leg last season! The comeback of all comebacks from a team who don't often surprise in a good way, when all looked dead and buried at 0-4.

Pep Guardiola is still very hands on despite rehabilitating at home following back surgery, says Manchester City assistant manager Juanma Lillo.

Guardiola, who had the operation in Barcelona earlier this week, will miss City's next two games.

Lillo will deputise for the manager for Saturday's trip to Sheffield United and Fulham's visit to Etihad Stadium on 2 September.

"The contact is continuous," Lillo said.

"Pep is watching Sheffield [United] right now. What's important is his health. It doesn't keep him from being who he is. He's fully focused on the match.

"He is telling us the surgery has been successful, his recovery has to take the necessary time. He feels fine."

However, Lillo confirmed that the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager will not take the team talk at Bramall Lane.

"We won't do a video conference because Pep doesn't want it," Lillo added.

What can you say about Manchester City? They're ridiculously good. The end.

City have not opened a season with three consecutive league wins since their first campaign under Pep Guardiola in 2016-17, so that's the aim today, with Sheffield United next on the chopping block after Burnley and Newcastle.

There's a personal milestone in the offing for Guardiola too. A win for City would give the Spaniard his 200th English top-flight victory in just his 269th game, beating the previous record of 326 matches set by Jose Mourinho in July 2020.

Guardiola could also become the fastest manager to win 200 Premier League games surpassing Sir Alex Ferguson's tally of 322.

Two games, two defeats. It has been a tough return for Sheffield United so far. Both those losses were by a single goal, though, with Palace beating them 1-0 on opening weekend and Forest needing a late Chris Wood goal to see them off last time out.

Paul Heckingbottom can take heart from the fact they've competed well. But he knows full well just how ruthless the Premier League is and how competing comes a distant second to getting actual points on the board, however you can.

Few will fancy them to get anything today.

In fact, many will have packed their fantasy football team with City players in anticipation of handsome returns from the game at Bramall Lane.

Actually, maybe just competing for 90 minutes wouldn't be the worst outcome for the Blades today!

Hammered at Newcastle on opening weekend, but bouncing back in stunning fashion a week later against Everton - this is the story of Villa's opening to the Premier League season.

Having gone on that stunning run of form under Unai Emery to qualify for Europe, much was expected of Villa this season. However, Newcastle did plenty to puncture that.

The real Villa turned up last weekend, though, with Sean Dyche's Everton feeling the wrath.

Since hitting the Toffees for four, they've hit Hibs for five in Europa Conference League qualifying, meaning games involving Villa are averaging 4.33 goals so far.

Might be worth keeping an eye on the action at Turf Moor then.

Because of issues with Kenilworth Road (where Burnley were meant to visit last weekend), Vincent Kompany's side have just played the one game so far. And it's hardly fair to go judging them by that, seen as it was a complete mismatch with Manchester City.

The Clarets arrived back in the top flight with a renewed vigour and a different reputation from that held under Sean Dyche. Kompany employs a different strategy - one it could be argued is more expansive and easier on the eye.

They will be very much looking to get their campaign started proper today at a Turf Moor ground in which they lost just once all of last season.

The visitors today have had the most up and down start of any side in the division.

Aston Villa also make two changes from the Europa Conference League play-off first-leg win at Hibernian.

On-loan Nicolo Zaniolo is on the bench, which looks light and contains two goalkeepers.

Villa XI: Olsen, Cash, Konsa, Carlos, Torres, Digne, Kamara, Luiz, Diaby, McGinn, Watkins.

We'll have team news for you shortly from the first two matches.

Here, though, is a teaser for the teams for the later game, including all we currently know about players' availability...

Newcastle midfielder Joelinton is available despite having to go off with an injury against Manchester City last Saturday.

New signing Lewis Hall is available for selection although head coach Eddie Howe says he lacks match sharpness.

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold has been passed fit after suffering a knock against Bournemouth.

However, Ibrahima Konate is a doubt with a muscle problem and Curtis Jones and Thiago Alcantara remain out.

Alexis Mac Allister is available after his red card against Bournemouth was rescinded.

  17. Today's actionpublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

The contest between Newcastle and Liverpool at St James' Park takes top spot on the card today, but we have to wait for it, with that the last of three fixtures this Sunday.

First up, we've got a couple of matches at 2pm. One sees a promoted team unleashed after missing a week of action, hosting a side who bounced back in a big way after taking a tonking at St James'. The other has another promoted side taking on last season's treble winners.

Plenty to get your teeth into there, right?!

For the absence of doubt, here is the full rundown of what we're bringing you this afternoon...

  18. A proper contestpublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

There's just something about games between Newcastle and Liverpool.

Maybe it's the fact it's between two big clubs with vast, passionate fanbases?

It could be the shared DNA - Kevin Keegan, Terry McDermott, Kenny Dalglish and the like.

Personally, because I'm of a certain age, I think a big part of it is because of what went down on 3 April 1996, when Stan Collymore's decisive blow in that seven-goal thriller left Keegan draped and broken over the advertising hoardings at Anfield.

Today, they meet in an early test of each other's top-of-the-table mettle. Expect fireworks.
