  1. Bye for now...Europe next!published at 17:44 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

So Celtic's two-year grip on the Scottish League Cup has come to an end after a thrilling win by Kilmarnock.

The Glasgow side had won it six times in the last seven years, but city rivals Rangers will no doubt be the new favourites given they have been drawn at home to Livingston in the last eight.

Kilmarnock's reward for knocking out last season's treble winners is also a home tie against Hearts, while Hibs host St Mirren and Aberdeen visit Ross County.

That's all from us for today, but join us in midweek as Rangers, Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs chase a place in the group stages of European competition.

  2. Naismith praise for debutant Offiahpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

FT: Heart of Midlothian 4-0 Partick Thistle

Hearts technical director Steven Naismith is pleased that on-loan Brighton defender Odel Offiah marked his debut with a goal in the convincing win over Thistle a day after arriving at the club.

"We know his talents," he tells BBC Scotland. "He's very powerful and aggressive in his defence duals, with a mature head as well, which is great for us.

"It's about coaching them. They're young, they're going to make mistake at times, but overall, I'm pretty certain that, over the course of this season, they'll all be better players than they are right now."

  3. Celtic records crumble at Killie's handspublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: Kilmarnock 1-0 Celtic

You realise the magnitude of Kilmarnock's win when you consider.

Celtic had never lost a domestic cup game under Brendan Rodgers during his first spell as manager.

Celtic had not lost a domestic cup tie since Rangers beat them in the Scottish Cup semi-final in April 2022.

The last time Celtic lost in the League Cup was back in November 2020 to Ross County.

Kilmarnock had lost their previous six meetings with Celtic since a draw in August 2020 and had not beaten the Glasgow side in 13 meetings since September 2018.

  4. McInnes targets lifting Viaplay Cuppublished at 17:31 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: Kilmarnock 1-0 Celtic

Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes tells BBC Sportsound his side "had a wee advantage" over Celtic today.

"To beat such a top opponent at this stage of the season, you have to do a lot right," he says.

"I'm really pleased with everything I saw today. I thought we limited Celtic to very little. It's testament to the players in front of my goalkeeper, who, across three games, has faced two or three shots.

"We dealt with the changes Celtic have the luxury of making really well and I'm delighted we're through to the next round of the cup tie.

"There's no point in beating Celtic if we don't go on to win it now. I've just said that to the boys. No one will remember this result if we don't go on and win it."

On the secret to today's win, McInnes adds: "We had a wee bit of an advantage over Celtic today. We looked a wee bit more together as a squad. They're still pitching towards where they want to be. We've got there a wee bit sooner than we thought and it's been a huge help today."

  5. 'I felt we were good for a draw'published at 17:27 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: Hibernian 2-1 Raith Rovers

Raith Rovers manager Ian Murray tells Sportsound he thinks his side deserved more from their defeat by Hibs.

"I wanted us to come and show what we can do and I felt we did that after the first seven or eight minutes, where Hibs had all the ball," he says.

"You saw the quality in their side when you have Joe Newell and Dylan Vente coming on. But, over the piece, I felt we were good for a draw and disappointed we didn't get that."

  6. 'Key was trying to get through game'published at 17:23 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: Hibernian 2-1 Raith Rovers

Hibs assistant coach Adam Owen tells Sportsound the Leith outfit are just happy to have edged through against Raith Rovers.

"It's a difficult one for the lads mentally with the travel and getting through the cup is never easy, but we're in the next round, that's what it's about," he says.

"The key was trying to get through the game with a result and trying to manage the lads in terms of minutes played and using the squad to its best. I think the manager did that with the way the changes happened."

  7. 'We weren't good enough today' - Rodgerspublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: Kilmarnock 1-0 Celtic

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers tells BBC Sportsound his side "didn't do enough to win the game" against Kilmarnock.

"We're disappointed with the goal," he says. "It comes from a throw-in and, despite being a man down at the time, we should be winning our dual and defending it better.

"We didn't do enough when we had the ball. We didn't show enough personality and didn't show the quality to win the game.

"You have to give all the credit to Kilmarnock. They defended strong, got their blocks in and took one of the few chances they had in the game.

"I have to analyse ourselves, though, and the quality wasn't good enough in the game."

On Celtic perhaps being less up to speed that Killie, he adds: "Whenever you play for Celtic, you have to be up to speed. We had enough time over pre-season and have had our games, so no, no excuses - we weren't good enough today."

  8. 'We made our own mistakes' - Doolanpublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

FT: Heart of Midlothian 4-0 Partick Thistle

Partick Thistle manager Kris Doolan tells BBC Sportsound his side's defeat by Hearts is "a tough one to take".

"We hate losing goals, but we made mistakes, our own mistakes," he says.

"When you step up a level against a Premiership side and gift them good chances, you get punished. We were inviting too much pressure.

"We didn't create anything today. We were chasing the game."

Celtic played in front of Kilmarnock today and they were quite comfortable allowing them to do that.

They didn't change their style of play, despite it being clear to see it wasn't working.

    Their identity was lost today.

  10. 'Credit to the squad, we were really good ' - Naismithpublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

FT: Heart of Midlothian 4-0 Partick Thistle

A very pleased Hearts technical director Steven Naismith tells BBC Sportsound: "These games can be difficult after midweek, but credit to the squad, we were really good.

"Some of the newer players that have come in have had to wait for their moments, but they're learning every day and, in spells, you could see that.

"The off-the-ball stuff, the reaction of the players in the transition moments, was excellent. It's a really pleasing day."

  11. Disappointing Celticpublished at 17:11 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

    FT: Kilmarnock 1-0 Celtic

    Pat Bonner
Former Celtic goalkeeper on BBC Sportsound

I'm stunned by the way Celtic played today. There's going to come a time when they lose a game, but it's the way the lost the game.

They didn't create the chances or put Kilmarnock under pressure. even when they were 1-0 down, they didn't do enough.

Kilmarnock deserve it, they were well organised and throughout the game, they continued to press Celtic high.

Brilliant scenes here. Listen, Kilmarnock fully deserve their win. I felt they wanted it a little bit more than Celtic. They put a lot of work-rate in there, disciplined in their shape. I felt like Celtic ran out of ideas. It was a very similar performance to the Rangers one where they reduced the opposition to not many opportunities.
