Former Newcastle United striker Les Ferdinand, speaking on Sky Sports: "It certainly does [send alarm bells into a boardroom]. Especially when you see the crowd leaving the stadium.

"Lack of quality you can deal with, but I have to say that for a large part of that game, Sheffield United didn't compete with Newcastle.

"They are struggling badly. But they have been competitive [in other matches]. You need the rub of the green and you need to get that result. Nine times out of ten it comes down to quality."

How bad are the newly promoted teams this season? Played 16 games between them, no wins, three points and only 12 goals scored. The gulf between Championship and Premier League never bigger.

It is concerning. You don't want a gap to appear and get to the stage where you are four or five points off 17th. More often than not we have teams that stay up and do well.

It would be nice to see one of them get a win next week and give them belief that they can compete in this league. Any team that comes up you have to expect to be fighting for your lives.

I feel sorry for Paul Heckingbottom because I look at him and think he did such a great job to get this team in the division. They are really short [on quality]. Yes, you can change managers but it is tough in the Premier League. It is unforgiving.

I have so much sympathy for the three managers that haven't picked up a win yet.

It's not going to be easy. You can't look at any fixture and think 'we can get a win here'. Just make sure that they get everyone right for the weekend and they have to show some character.

    FT: Sheff Utd 0-8 Newcastle

    Jamie Carragher
Former Liverpool defender on Sky Sports

When you look at what Sheffield United have done this season, the games they've been involved in against top opposition, they took those games right to the wire. We look at the results they've had and they are really close games. A bit of luck and that changes.

Most people in football will hope it is a freak result. I think it is always difficult for a manager when it's 3-0. You want to give the fans something to cheer about and hope you can get back in it but you do fear it could get worse.

  7. 'Hungry for goals and for success'published at 19:13 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    FT: Sheff Utd 0-8 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was very good. I don't know whether it was the complete performance. We are always looking to look and find things to improve. It's a really tough place to come, especially off the back of a European week for us so delighted with the players."

On turning up in their best condition: "Well that was the key to the game. If we didn't turn up in the best condition Sheffield United would have beaten us.

"First of all we had to attack the game in the way that we normally would. We had to be ready for what they would throw at us, try and quieten the crowd and we started really well and got the goal early. That settled us down and we played some really good football after that.

"It shows you that the players were very motivated for the game. They were hungry for goals and for success. I do think we've got a really motivated group. I see really good character traits through the whole squad. It's a long season for us. We've got a lot of challenges to come but certainly the last week has been a return to form for us."

On Anthony Gordon: "He's a top player. So our idea was just to rest him after two really big physical efforts. He comes on straight away and yeah I think that's his best game in a Newcastle shirt. I thought he was outstanding and he's really found a good rhythm this season and hopefully that continues."

  9. 'Our season won't be defined by this game'published at 19:06 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    FT: Sheff Utd 0-8 Newcastle

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom, speaking to Sky Sports: "The first half we had to change the way we wanted to play, set up a bit differently. We went in 3-0 down and that was purely down to our organisation.

"We made changes at half time to chase the game and regardless of mistakes, mistakes lead to goals. The things we have to put right are the bits off the ball.

"We understand the league we are in, we've lost three points regardless but as long as learn from the nature of the defeat and what went wrong then all we have lost is three points.

"You could see moments where Newcastle out-fought us and out-ran us. That is not acceptable. We want to compete. There is still a level of competition we expect. We know they have top class players but there is an expectation from us that we are here to compete.

"The organisation is on me but it is not like we don't work on it.

"We prepare for moments like this, we prepare for coming up against top teams and we prepare for our performances not being good enough. Our season won't be defined by this game so long as we take the things from it we need to and address things."

    Newcastle United

Newcastle Unite striker Callum Wilson, speaking to Sky Sports: "Delighted to get the three points and get the goal.

"Especially having missed a few chances in the first half, I was frustrated at half-time that I hadn't got on the scoresheet. Once Kieran [Trippier] put his head up I knew there was no doubt. It was concentration and making sure. I missed a few, but this one has got to go in."

How did the 8-0 happen? "I wouldn't be able to explain it myself. We did a lot of research on Sheffield United. We knew it was going to be a difficult game. Once the first and second went in we had so much pace and the only disappointing thing is that we could have been even more clinical."

Recovering from a shaky start to the season: "Hard work comes into that on the training field. The fans were there at the end of that game [against Brighton] even though we'd lost. Today it is nice to give back, with the same people who were there that day and give them something to cheer about."

On rotation in the squad: "Frustrating at times, especially when you have scored. You want to get a bit of momentum going. But you understand the reasoning and all you can do is respond to that and get the goal when you have the opportunity to."

Kicking on: "We've got Man City in a competition [Carabao Cup on Wednesday] when we got to the final and we want to get there again. You have got to try and progress and we have got to try and do everything that we can on the day."

  12. 'We have to learn from this'published at 18:56 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom, speaking to BBC Sport: "A bad end to what has been a bad week for us.

"These results are going to come, we expect them but it is the nature of the performance that we are upset about. We were undone by our organisation.

"We can't afford to put ourselves behind in that sort of fashion if we want to compete. It is the second half I am upset with, regardless of the errors that lead to goals. We need to make sure we learn from that.

"A lot of the things I saw in the second half I've never seen here. There are certain things that aren't acceptable, which they know.

"These games are not going to define our season. It is about accumulating the points. While there are huge things we have to learn from, we also have to keep a calm head about this sort of game.

"No-one wants to see that. The supporters were first class, you could hear them all the way through. It has been a tough week for everyone, we wanted to do our bit to change that but we've failed.

"You can't feel sorry for yourself. We are ready to go tomorrow morning. There are things we have to address from that, we can't shy away from it but the good thing is you always have another game."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought we were really good from the start and when the goals came I felt the confidence in the team returned."

On what he said at half time: "The big thing for us was that we really wanted to score and we weren't content with three and I want that mentality to run through the team."

On eight different scores: "We shared them around a bit today. There were important ones there for Alexander Isak to score and Sean Longstaff, for me he is a goal-scoring midfielder. So some really important ones for the individuals."

On three clean sheets in a row: ""It is a welcome return to form in that regard because we were so good defensively last season and we weren't as watertight at the start of this one. It is a welcome boost for us because we know we have top quality defenders."

Callum: To give the Sheffield United supporters some hope, last season Bournemouth lost 9-0 to Liverpool and they stayed up, so there is always hope that history can repeat itself.

Anon: I've never seen a team come up and look as open as Sheffield United. At times it looked like they had one central midfielder. It's even more incredible considering they looked like they'd get something from Manchester City and Spurs.

This was Newcastle’s biggest ever away win in the league, while it is their largest overall league victory since their 8-0 defeat of Sheffield Wednesday in September 1999. The Magpies have only ever won by a greater margin once in their league history, via their 13-0 win over Newport County in October 1946.
