  1. 'Nobody around the club seems concerned about the lack of wins'published at 13:16 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    Brighton v Bournemouth (14:00 BST)

In the latest episode of Cherries Unpicked, BBC Radio Solent commentator Kris Temple highlighted the need to view Bournemouth's start to the season with perspective.

He said: "Nobody around the club seems concerned about the lack of wins. Of course it is always a concern but it's at the bottom of the list at the moment.

"We're five games into a 38 game season and looking at the table Bournemouth are just below Chelsea and Manchester United, and only by a couple of points.

"The fixtures have been horrible too. They've got Everton, Wolves and Burnley coming up, three games, two at home, that they'll look at and thing 'OK, we'll start to have a think about things'. The team will be clicking better then.

"A lot of stats that you see are based around last season under completely different players, it's irrelevant. Everything about the football now is different.

"Last season Bournemouth stayed up, that's great but we draw a line under that now."

  2. 'Plenty of positives' or 'a night to forget'?published at 13:13 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    Brighton v Bournemouth (14:00 BST)

Brighton didn't make the start they wanted to in Europe this week, losing 3-2 to AEK Athens. However, there were enough positives for the Seagulls to take according to their former striker Glenn Murray...

"AEK were a very tough test, they burst onto the game, they took the lead. Brighton fought back on a couple of occasions and showed a lot of character and ultimately the goal that has won the game is a real fluke. It’s ricocheted off Jason Steele, back onto the striker and into the back of the net.

"You have to deal with that and Brighton pushed right to the very end. They controlled the game all through the second half and into added time and they deserved something out of the game.

"But there are plenty of positives to take. They will go away from this and it’s about recovering now for the Premier League."

Former Albion midfielder Warren Aspinall told BBC Radio Sussex he was disappointed by what he saw from Roberto De Zerbi's side: "It's not the start Brighton wanted. I thought from the start the passing was off, the two strikers made the same runs and the wide players didn’t do enough in wide areas.

"If I’m really honest it’s what we deserved. We didn’t create many chances and we come away with no points. AEK Athens did a good job on us. We couldn’t break them down and when you’re under pressure you have to think of a different way and we couldn’t tonight. Sometimes you need to play differently.

"All three goals could have been prevented and it was a poor start in the competition. It’s a night to forget."

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has defended the club's medical team amid a lengthy injury list at the club.

The Blues were without 12 senior squad players for the goalless draw with Bournemouth last time out.

"It's the profile of the player, the risk of the player. It's not the people working in the medical staff of performance area," said Pochettino.

"I think we need to respect these areas [at the club] are very good professionals, qualified people. That's why they are working in football. But there's an individual risk to [certain] players, you need to assess.

"Then there's bad luck. We have injures that maybe happen in one season or maybe in two, but have happened [to Chelsea] because of different situations you cannot control."

German football expert Raphael Honigstein told BBC Radio 5 Live's Euro Leagues that Jurgen Klopp's "mission doesn't feel quite over at Liverpool yet" after he was linked with the Germany managerial job before Julian Nagelsmann's appointment.

"So far the timelines have not aligned between him and the German FA," Honigstein said.

"There was a real view within the corridors of power that a couple of years ago, coming off the back of that very bad Covid season and when Jurgen Klopp’s mother had passed away, that Klopp was looking for a change.

"But again the timings weren’t quite right and in the end he renewed his contract and seems very happy and very motivated at Liverpool at the moment."

But let's not get too carried away, yeah.

Spurs' opponent today come into this game looking, as Larry David would say, pretty, pretty, pretty good.

They have as many wins as Spurs, as many points. They've smashed Manchester United (OK, maybe that's not a huge feather in the cap right now), they come into this off the back of a thumping Champions League win and it's pretty clear already that last season was no flash in the pan.

Mikel Arteta's men are seeking to win three consecutive league games against Tottenham for the first time since a run of five between 1987 and 1989.

Talk about a breath of fresh air!

Folk in Glasgow knew perfectly well what Spurs were getting when they pinched Ange Postecoglou this summer. But a battered and bruised Tottenham fanbase were understandably wary of any decision their club made after seeing everything unravel in recent years.

But in strides big Ange, dusts the club off after losing Harry Kane and sets about constructing a new version of the Lilywhites.

Yes, I know, it's only been a handful of games, but there's been enough in those to suggest Spurs are going to be a team to watch this season. They look like they've got a top-four challenge in them. They look, dare I say it, fun again.

After a season in which Arsenal flew and they stuttered and stumbled, followed by a summer in which their star man flew the coop, Tottenham will have seen the Gunners as their sixth fixture of this season and felt a bit of dread.

It's funny, though, what a few wins and some fun football can quickly do to the mood of a fanbase.

Four wins and a draw from five games and Ange-ball has out smiles on faces and a bit of saliva in mouths ahead of what could be one of the most competitive North-London derbies in recent memory.

And we, lucky lot that we are, get to enjoy every kick!
