Are Sheffield United, Burnley and Luton going to be the worst three promoted teams ever ?

    John in Romford

Really interested by the pundits’ views on Newcastle in the first half - I am amazed how positive they are - the Newcastle I watched I the first half were sluggish and second best for first 15 mins and lucky not to be behind. They’ve got a bit better, but have not taken what would be considered the best chances and been a bit lucky overall. Am I the only Newcastle fan that thinks this?

Will we see a Sheffield United reaction? Back under way.

  4. 'Only thing missing is scoring'published at 17:35 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    FT: Chelsea 0-1 Aston Villa

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to BBC Sport: "I am not frustrated, just disappointed. I think we were the better team until the red card.

"The team has given everything, we need to keep working. To play with 10 men is always difficult but the team worked hard.

"We need to change the situation, the only way I know we can change the situation is by working really hard.

"We are confident in the way we perform. The only thing we are missing is scoring. If we keep working hard we will change."

  5. 'It feels like two points lost'published at 17:34 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    FT: Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to Sky Sports: "We feel like we lost two points. It's true there was a lot of change in the dominance of the game. But especially when we had more control and more dominance in the game and we score the goal, they score straight away.

"And we missed the huge chance we had with Gabriel Jesus, big moments for us. To do that, we still came back into the game, we started quite good, we scored the goal, but straight away we concede. So, emotionally, that was a difficult one to take.

"I thought we struggled for a period 10 or 15 minutes later, we lacked a lot of composure with the ball and we made a basketball game. But I think in the end we pushed, pushed and pushed, but couldn't get the win.

"The hardest thing to do is put the ball in the net. We've done it twice but I think we conceded two really poor goals. At this level they're going to punish you because they've got top players.

"Obviously we are dissapointed with the way we conceded the goals, but of course this is football and you have to live with that."

On the penalty decision: "I have seen it back but straight away my players looked so convinced that we were going to get the penalty."

On Declan Rice's injury: "He looked really uncomfortable with a back issue and we had to take him off.

"These are the things we have to get used to. We did a lot of things today to win the game, but obviously when you make mistakes this game becomes really difficult."

  6. 'This side is growing'published at 17:33 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    FT: Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou to Sky Sports: "I thought performance-wise we had to show a bit of everything we've got. They're a good, top team and we had to defend at times. But I thought we showed real courage and bravery just to keep playing our football. We certainly pressed agressively.

"I thought we were unfortunate with both of the goals, an own goal and a penalty, but great character to come from behind in a difficult place twice."

On the decision to award Arsenal a penalty: "I didn't see it. I saw the one that was given yesterday. I don't know what the handball rules are. It's pretty much if it hits your hand it's a penalty these days so, even with guys shooting from a metre away.

"But anyway he gave it. Like I said, it seems like their needed to be forensic evidence to give it."

On the result: "It's brilliant. That's four away games we've had in difficult venues. We've gone behind at three of them but a brilliant response. They're a top team, particularly here at home. We know how hard they are to beat.

"This side is growing. In terms of our football we're still at the beginning but I'm so impressed with the character we're showing, particularly as a group.

"It's just further evidence that we're having an encouraging start. We're only six games into building our side here. Today was about playing our football in a top venue against a difficult side and I thought today at times we did and that's the most pleasing thing."

  7. 'Mature performance'published at 17:32 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    FT: Liverpool 3-1 West Ham

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "In moments very good. Tough opponent. I had a long talk before the game with David [Moyes], fantastic guy.

"It's obvious how good a team or squad West Ham has now and they can cause each team problems. They did it with us today. We tried to control the game and create chances and that's pretty tricky you have to be consistent to deal with setbacks.

"Super goals. Love them and really really good performance and mature performance. That's it, really happy for today."

  9. 'The worst game in my time'published at 17:30 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    FT: Brighton 3-1 Bournemouth

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi: "We played the worst game in my time. In two or three situations we were lucky. It is the first time we have played after a European game. We have to get used to playing a lot of games in a row. I changed a lot of players because we need to give one game on the bench for the players. We can't lose a player like Pascal Gross or Lewis Dunk the last game. We have to adapt. We didn't play well but showed character.

"We spoke at half time and that the attitude was not enough. We have to push more and attack more with intensity and be stronger.

"Mitoma is a great player for us but today we suffer without March. Gross is a unique player for us and to lose him is very tough. For new players it is tough to play with the same qualities of other players."

  10. 'Clean sheet important'published at 17:28 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    FT: Chelsea 0-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery: "It is very important at the beginning to try and keep consistent in the Premier League. We needed to find a way where we were stronger than we were against Newcastle and Liverpool. Today was tough but we competed very well.

"We had our chances to score, we tried in those moments to be offensive and we did. It is always difficult to win here.

"The clean sheet is important. We have to feel good defensively and feel comfortable when we try to control possession and the game. These three points are very important for us to try and keep the balance in the Premier League.

"There is still work to do but today I think is very good. We have to keep trying to keep going forward working on the things we want to improve."

  11. 'Game of two halves'published at 17:27 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

    FT: Liverpool 3-1 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham striker Jarrod Bowen: "I think we had a few chances and maybe that's what it comes down to just taking our chances when we get them.

"Away at Anfield it is never easy and when you create good chances we should put them away. But also we've got to keep the ball out of our net to give us the best chance we've got right up until the end of the game

"It's a game probably of two halves where we were happy going in with a draw because we felt like we'd done some good stuff, created some good chances, but second half we didn't create as much as we wanted."

After conceding, Sheffield United have basically collapsed.

They can't handle Gordon. He is causing them all sorts of problems. They can't deal with him and he has had a great impact since he has come on.

Big team talk for Paul Heckingbottom but Newcastle have been outstanding.

Sheffield United only have themselves to blame. Played anti-football at Spurs last week, now their defenders are more interested in pulling shirts than actually clearing the ball!
