Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins: "It is always nice to score and help the team to win. It had been a few games I hadn't scored. I knew the goals would come but I am delighted it has come in a game that helps the team and helps us get the three points.

"The defender did well to block the first shot but then it fell to me and I hit it quite cleanly. I was always feel good, but that first goal is tricky to get.

"We played against a top team in Poland the other day and then it was a quick turnaround. We showed our resilience, kept playing our game.

"We concede goals because we play such a high line it is risky. But we've got an unbelievable goalkeeper who one v one is so hard to score against.

"We have such a good squad. We have crucial players out with injuries that we cannot forget about. We just have to keep recovering and keep working hard."

Lots of tributes outside Bramall Lane following the very sad news that Maddy Cusack, a midfielder at the Women's Championship club, has died at the age of 27.

One Blades shirt pinned to barriers outside the ground says: "We'll love and miss you forever, Mads".

Meanwhile, the club flag is flying at half mast while a number of floral tributes have been placed outside the ground.

    Liverpool

Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister: "Very tough game. We know them, we know how they play and we knew that they were going to try and defend a lot and try to counter attack. We prepared really well for the game and thank goodness we won it.

"It was my first assist for the club and even nicer because it was to Darwin, very happy, but of course the most important thing is the result.

"We are working really hard and everyone can see we have improved a lot since the beginning and this is the way and we will have to keep working.

"The most important thing is to win games and we are doing it."

  4. 'Why can't things be normal?'published at 16:08 British Summer Time 24 September 2023

This has been a weird week. On Saturday, I was going to celebrate my wedding anniversary when I saw a report suggesting Chris Wilder was on the cards to return to Sheffield United, replacing Paul Heckingbottom. Because of course. Why can't things just be normal for once?

It's well known that Prince Abdullah and Wilder have developed a strong relationship since the former Blades boss left Bramall Lane.

Yet replacing Heckingbottom, especially after a competitive start in the Premier League, would be absurd. He's done a remarkable job himself and deserves more than these headlines popping up moments after they nearly won at Tottenham.

I'm led to believe there's not much in this report, a feeling backed up by not so subtle posts from the club on X (formerly known as Twitter) celebrating Heckingbottom's win percentage on Monday.

Even so, there's often no smoke without fire. It wouldn't be a total stunner if this story crops up again down the line.

Aami: This Liverpool team has a lot of potential and is only going to get better. Confident we finish in top four and push the top two. A defender in the January window could make us title challengers.

Matt: Let's call this what is - an absolutely bang average Villa performance helped by a shocking refereeing display. Chelsea completely dominant but repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot makes for a complete package!

Sheffield United are paying tribute to Maddy Cusack before this game to "celebrate and honour" her life. Cusack, a midfielder at the Women's Championship club, died on Wednesday at the age of 27.

She became the first player to reach 100 appearances for United's women's team last season, while she also worked in the club's marketing department.

Before joining the Blades in 2019, Cusack also played for Birmingham, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

"Ahead of the Newcastle game, we will celebrate and honour the life of Maddy Cusack, a loved and respected figure of the Sheffield United family," the club said.

"There will forever be a void in the hearts of everyone connected to the club."

They were tested today at times by West Ham and they dealt with that test, clinically in front of goal. They got the job done and that was the most important thing. Some quality moments especially from Darwin Nunez who has found it difficult so far in his Liverpool career but showed today what he is capable of.

Anon: A Liverpool team that cost £500m to assemble cannot be considered as "dark horses". If you don't compete it's a failure.

Ryan: Mark @ 15:52 - Dark horses? Liverpool? One of the most successful teams in football history!

Anon: Liverpool aren't close to City. Huge slices of luck have gone their way alongside some truly outrageous decisions. It will balance out during the season and they'll end up well off the pace.

Two half-time changes do the job for Brighton, who were poor before the break but much better after, thanks in part to Ansu Fati, but mainly Kaoru Mitoma.

Bournemouth remain without a league win this season.
