As you can't fail to have been reminded this week amongst all the video tech nonsense, Tottenham nicked a 2-1 home win over Liverpool last weekend, thanks to Joel Matip's 96th-minute own goal.

Some other stuff happened in the game too.

Putting all that aside, it shows once again that this is a different Tottenham to recent years. They've got some backbone. This is hardly surprising when you hear their manager speak. He does not come across as a fella to take a backward step.

Going top of the league today would be a big statement of intent.

A summer of massive upheaval at Tottenham was always going to dominate the conversation this autumn amongst fans and journalists. However that conversation has quickly shifted away from the big figures who no longer dominate the landscape.

James Maddison has become an absolutely vital cog in their attacking apparatus. He's been so influential that it is now frightening to think what it might be like without him.

However, he is not the only new signing to sparkle in these opening weeks. Destiny Udogie is only 20 but has already shown himself to be not only one of the most talented left-backs in the Premier League, but also one of the most level-headed. When a Spurs defender gets booked early in a North London Derby up against Bukayo Saka, you tend to feel it's only going to end one way. Not last Sunday. Udogie subdued Saka in the second half despite walking that tightrope.

Micky Van de Ven has slotted in alongside Cristian Romero at centre-back as though they've been playing together for years. His unfussy style and sheer enthusiasm for defending has turned Romero into a much more composed defender as well. He's also pretty rapid. Just ask Cody Gakpo, who must have thought he was through on goal on Saturday, only to see Van de Ven thunder past him to tidy up.

And a word too for the goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who's first half double save against Liverpool kept the score at 0-0. In their own way, all three have contributed as much as Maddison.

The previous spine of this team, for good or ill, has been stripped out. Lloris, Dier, Hojberg, Kane – all gone or discarded. The players that have come in have all quietly distinguished themselves and made it look much easier than it actually is.

  3. First Premier League win 'a highly significant moment'published at 12:11 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

A win and an all-round solid defensive performance at Everton means that we are officially up and running in the Premier League. Four points on the board, out of the relegation zone, and the first of the promoted trio to win a game in the competition this season.

Although it is still early days, it will not stop the Hatters from dreaming of survival, akin to the 1980s when Luton became quite the escape artists, with Derby County often being the team against whom we would grab the necessary points to ensure survival in the top league.

While discussing Derby, hopefully this goes some way to encourage those who insisted Luton were only here to make up the numbers and that we were likely to beat Derby's long-standing record low points total of 11, that Rob Edwards' side will be doing absolutely everything they can, leaving everything on the pitch after every match.

This is a highly significant moment for Luton Town fans. Our previous top-flight victory came on 25 April 1992 - some 11,480 days before Saturday's victory at Goodison Park.

After that 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Kenilworth Road in front 11,178 spectators, we held our chances of survival entirely in our own hands, needing a victory at Notts County on the final day to ensure our participation in the maiden Premier League season.

Well, 31 years later, here we are again, with pretty much a full season ahead of us. Survival is once more entirely in our own hands. Let's not waste this golden opportunity.

Luton manager Rob Edwards reacts to defeat at home to Burnley: "I'm obviously really disappointed with the result, we're down, flat and hurting because of the manner of it.

"We pushed, we had set-pieces, we went forward in numbers and were brave, aggressive and didn't allow them the control they wanted.

"But we come away with nothing and that hurts.

"The lads gave everything. The fans were clapping at the end and if they're doing that then we're doing the right things, but everybody will be disappointed because we should have taken something from the game."

Yves Bissouma is not just a player who will sit in front of the back four, he has many more aspects to his game.

He can pick up the ball, dribble, and get the ball into Son, Maddison etcetera. He is an incredibly talented footballer and is right up there in terms of the best midfielders in the league this season.

His confidence that he is showing in his game now makes it even more strange what happened under Antonio Conte last year.

  8. Pick of the statspublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

    Luton v Tottenham (12:30 BST)

    • This is the first meeting between Luton Town and Tottenham since a goalless draw in a top-flight game at Kenilworth Road in March 1992.
    • Spurs are unbeaten in eight Premier League games (W6 D2), with no side currently on a longer run without defeat.
    • Luton have won just one of their past 10 home league games against London sides (D5 L4) - with that victory coming against QPR in October last season.
    • Tottenham have had more shots than any other Premier League side this season (138), with their average of 19.7 per game their highest on record in a campaign since 1997-98. They've had at least 20 efforts in three of their past four league games, as many as they had done in their previous 28.
    • Luton's Rob Edwards is looking to be the first Welsh manager to win a Premier League game against Tottenham since Mark Hughes with Stoke City in May 2015. Since then, Welshmen have drawn four and lost seven against Spurs - including the past five by an aggregate score of 18-2.

The achievement of this club getting here, what they have done with the resources they have, or the lack of resources, is incredible.

We could probably name plenty of players across the league that earn more than this club do in wages each season.

They have a manager in Rob Edwards that has instilled a philosophy and way of playing here that they will continue to stick to and try to use to get results.

Alongside that though there has to be a belief in that changing room to come out on to the pitch today that they can win. They went to Everton and won, we know how hard that is to do.

Luton went into their midweek game with Burnley in good spirits after recording their first ever Premier League win, at Everton last weekend.

They were brought crashing back down to earth as Jacob Bruun Larsen's stunning winner - barely a minute after the Hatters had drawn level late on - gave the Clarets their own first win of the season.

It leaves Rob Edwards' side on four points, still out of the relegation zone as it stands mind. So a decent result this lunchtime would be just dandy for them to try and claw a bit more distance between themselves and the bottom three.

Ange Postecoglou is not changing Tottenham's style of play for the trip to Kenilworth Road on Saturday but at the same time is aware of the threat posed by Premier League newcomers Luton Town.

Spurs could go top of the league if they win the early kick-off and yet he knows just how difficult that will be to achieve.

"I think Luton will be resilient," he said. "Their results have not been as positive but all their games have been really tight.

"Rob [Edwards] did a fantastic job to get them promoted on the back of resilience and competitiveness and they are bringing that to the Premier League. They fight for everything.

"They are a fantastic story. Having been among the big boys for a long time, they fell down the pecking order but to fight back up is great for the town. Any team playing them is in for a tough game."

Postecoglou's Spurs have drawn praise for their high-intensity style and he intends to deploy that against the Hatters.

"We have got to play our football and try to bring the game to the kind of things we want to dominate in," he said. "We are still learning aspects of our game so to improve we have to focus on ourselves, irrespective of the challenge.

"If we don't, it will be a difficult game for us."

Manor Solomon plans to come back "stronger than ever" after undergoing surgery on a knee injury.

It was confirmed by Tottenham that the forward suffered a meniscus injury to his right knee in training this week and underwent surgery on Thursday.

They added that he would begin his rehabilitation "immediately" with their medical staff.

The 24-year-old - who joined in the summer transfer window from Shakhtar Donetsk having previously spent last season on loan with Fulham - has featured in five of Spurs' seven league games this season, making two assists.

Taking to social media on Friday, Solomon said: "Not an easy one to take for me personally, but I've already started my rehabilitation in order to come back as soon as possible and stronger than ever.

"Thank you all for your support, looking forward to seeing you soon on the pitch."

OK, one more entry on VAR, largely because I want to provide a link to that audio again...

Referees' body PGMOL released the audio of discussions between the match officials around Diaz's disallowed goal on Tuesday.

Video assistant referee Darren England said the check was "perfect", before swearing when he realised a mistake had been made.

From this weekend, PGMOL said VARs will confirm the outcome of any decisions with their assistant VARs before notifying the on-field officials to prevent a repeat mistake.

"I've got absolutely zero against goalline technology, that's a no-brainer because that's quite significant, but it works for our game," added Postecoglou.

"I just think our game is unique and I know people say, 'well, let's get referees explaining their decisions'. Oh my God. Seriously? Could you imagine sitting there listening to a referee explain every decision on the game."

  16. Team news - Spurs unchanged, three Luton changespublished at 11:38 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

    Luton v Tottenham (12:30 BST)

Luton boss Rob Edwards makes three changes to the side that lost against Burnley last week.

Defender Amari'i Bell misses out with the hamstring problem he suffered in that midweek defeat by Burnley while Ross Barkley is on the bench after his own hamstring issue.

Issa Kabore and Teden Mengi also drop to the bench while Reece Burke, Elijah Adebayo and Mads Andersen start.

Luton XI: Kaminski, Lockyer, Andersen, Ogbene, Morris, Adebayo, Nakamba, Burke, Mpanzu, Brown, Doughty

Subs: Krul, Barkley, Berry, Woodrow, Kabore, Chong, Mengi, Giles,Johnson

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou opts for the same team that faced Liverpool last week.

James Maddison starts alongside Richarlison and Son Heung-min with Yves Bissouma and Destiny Udogie also getting the nod.

Spurs forward Manor Solomon has undergone surgery after suffering a knee injury in training.

Meanwhile, Brennan Johnson remains sidelined with the hamstring problem which caused him to miss last week's win over Liverpool.

Tottenham XI: Vicario, Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie, Sarr, Bissouma, Kulusevski, Maddison, Richarlison, Son

I'm going to mention it once and then forget about it... at least until the action starts and we're left to experience it's use again.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou would like to banish the video assistant referee system "in its current form".

Spurs benefited from VAR officials failing to overturn a wrongly flagged offside decision when Luis Diaz scored for Liverpool with their match at 0-0.

Postecoglou's side won last Saturday's game 2-1 after an injury-time own goal.

Asked whether he would get rid of VAR, the Spurs manager said: "I would, in its current form. I just don't think that technology's ready for our game."
