    Brighton v Liverpool (14:00 BST)

    • Brighton won 3-0 against Liverpool in their last Premier League meeting in January – the Seagulls have never beaten the Reds in consecutive league games, with this their 29th such meeting.
    • Liverpool have had four players sent off in the Premier League this season; it’s the first time in the competition’s history that a side has been given four reds in their opening seven games of a campaign. Liverpool’s four red cards in their last six Premier League games are as many as in their previous 178 matches combined.
    • Solly March has either scored (2) or assisted (3) five of Brighton’s last eight Premier League goals against Liverpool, netting a brace and setting up a Danny Welbeck goal in this exact fixture last season. His five goal involvements against the Reds are his most against an opponent in the competition.
    • Mohamed Salah has only been involved in more Premier League goals against Man Utd (14) and West Ham (13) than he has against Brighton (6 goals, 6 assists in 12 apps), with seven of these coming in his six appearances at the Amex Stadium.

    Brighton v Liverpool (14:00 BST)

    Julien Laurens
French football expert on BBC Radio 5 Live

He [Harvey Elliott] is completely deserved to start. Right now, I just don't think Gravenberch is in the top three or top four in the pecking order for midfielder from Klopp.

I think Szobozslai and Mac Allister are the starters and then it is up to who plays the left side of centre midfield. There's Curtis Jones, who is suspended, and then Harvey Elliott, who starts today.

Endo can play there too, and Gravenberch is an option too.

Jurgen Klopp laughs out loud when asked by TV what Liverpool need to do to celebrate his eighth anniversary in style.

"Play good would be nice," he says. "Use the good form we're in. It will be a tough one but in these eight years I cannot remember an easy game."

Asked about Brighton, Klopp adds: "I couldn't admire them more."

The German says Liverpool will "go for it" and says it's good to have a player of Trent Alexander-Arnold's quality back starting in the Premier League for the first time since 3 September.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking to PLP before the match against West Ham: "I think we have had a rest in between games. Hopefully the lads physically and mentally are ready. Not maybe the rotation we would prefer but I have full confidence in the players.

"It is early days for us. The games have been really good. The attention to every match has been spot on. The demands are so high sand it is going to be a tough game.

"I think when you play West Ham you have to be good at certain aspects. Set-pieces will be crucial and stopping their danger men. And then it is for us to give them problems too."

"We are enjoying it [Europe] but it [the fixture schedule] is part of being in Europe. We have a squad good enough and big enough to rotate and we did it the other day.

"I think they [Newcastle] are playing as well as any team in Europe at the moment. They have had a great couple of seasons. It was hard for us here last year so hopefully we can improve and get a result."

"I think performance-wise we've had tough fixtures. It has been a tough start at home but the lads are ready. The fans have been excellent. We need them today, they are going to be bouncing, I am sure.

"Systems are not as important as they used to be. Things move around more. Team selection is based on last week, on Aston Villa and how we want to play."

What makes Brighton a threat? "Their style of play. They are a great team with talent and a great manager as well. It was always going to be a tough game and today is another one. We just need to make sure what we have been working on during the week, we apply it today."

“Sunday will be a tough, tough game. They’ve started the season strongly as well, but we want to win the match. It’s the last game before the international break and it’s another opportunity for us to get three points and push up the table.

“It’s always a tasty game when we play them because they play at such a high intensity. They always bring a good away following too so it is set up for a really good game.”

  12. Do Villa have the depth for Thursday - Sunday?published at 13:14 British Summer Time 8 October 2023

Wolves v Aston Villa (14:00 BST)

    Tom Gayle
    BBC Radio 5 Live commentator

For the second Europa Conference League game running, Aston Villa struggled to replicate a performance anywhere near the levels they’ve shown domestically, which has seen them make their best Premier League start in 25 years.

For 93 minutes they sat bottom of Group E, being held by the Bosnian and Herzegovinian Champions Zrinjski Mostar. John McGinn’s late winner sent fans home happy, still believing they can ‘do a West Ham’, and go all the way in this competition. But, given the standard of opposition, the majority of the match made for painfully frustrating viewing.

It’s understandable Unai Emery wants to rotate his squad. But he must be concerned about the drop off in level his decision to make six changes had. A full-strength Aston Villa could once again trouble the top six this season. However there are serious doubts whether those players not getting substantial Premier League minutes can help prop up a legitimate European challenge.

  13. 'Lopetegui might once have been Mr Right, but O’Neil is Mr Right Now'published at 13:12 British Summer Time 8 October 2023

Wolves v Aston Villa (14:00 BST)

    Mike Taylor
    BBC WM

Mario Lemina said it plainly: "We deserved it, because we had the better tactic to beat them in this game."

He was being a little modest there on behalf of the Wolves players, who experienced one of those days when everyone was on top of their game, and they surfed on an atmosphere of rare energy to a famous win over champions Manchester City.

But he expanded on the point: "The thing is, if everyone is committed to the tactic - and because the gaffer is really good on it - we’re not going to suffer so much during the season. Because of all the talk we had during the week, with the gaffer and the players, we were really focused."

There have already been novellas written about the tactical plan deployed by Wolves on Saturday. I will not add to them here, other than to say that you could sense it working from early on – and so could the players. It’s easier to give your best if you can feel what you’re doing is making a difference.

Until Saturday, a significant chunk of the Wolves support was not being won over by Gary O’Neil or by those who decided to hire him. It would be a good week, then, for the Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs to take a lap of honour, but in his interview with the BBC this week he made a number of pertinent points.

When Julen Lopetegui left, it was a bad look for a manager so well-known in Europe - and so long coveted by Wolves - to say he was not being given the resources required, and that he apparently expected. But Wolves have been in a very different financial situation this year, and the sense left by Hobbs’ interview was that while Lopetegui might once have been Mr Right for Wolves, O’Neil is Mr Right Now.

By the accounts of Lemina and Hobbs, the players think so too. "You’re seeing him improve individuals on the pitch," said Hobbs. "I’ve got a great relationship with a lot of the players - they talk to me and they’re so excited about where we’re going. I think now gradually the fans will continue to turn and be open-minded about what Gary’s doing and the direction he’s taking us."

Hobbs will know, as we all know, that the relationship between the fans and the manager will be governed by results. But Saturday was a good start.

    Brighton v Liverpool (14:00 BST)

Roberto de ZerbiImage source, Getty Images

Roberto de Zerbi has urged Brighton's players to consider their "habits" in the face of a mounting injury list.

The Brighton boss has spoken repeatedly of the challenge of managing his squad as the club adjusts to the demands of European football.

Tariq Lamptey has become his most recent injury concern after the 2-2 draw with Marseille on Thursday as the Seagulls look to a game against Liverpool on Sunday.

"(Lamptey) was one of the best of us on the pitch," said De Zerbi.

"Now the problem is for Sunday, because I don't want to take risks with him. He was injured in the last part of last season and the first part of this season.

"But at the moment it's very tough because we lost Pervis, I don't know if we will have James Milner. We have to analyse Pascal Gross' situation, for him it was the first game after injury. It's a tough moment, but I think we can play well anyway.

"The most important thing is not physical. For Lamptey yes, for Pascal in this moment it can be a physical problem. Lewis Dunk lost the pre-season, Solly March as well lost pre-season. But for the others, the problem is not physical.

"It's about habits. We have to change our habits, but we will reach that point. It's a target for us, to reach the level which we have to play every game, every week, three games (a week). I don't know how much time we need, but that's the target."

  15. 'Have to put a few things right' - Klopp on Brighton rematchpublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 8 October 2023

    Brighton v Liverpool (14:00 BST)

Jurgen Klopp is ready to "put things right" as his Liverpool side returns to Amex Stadium this weekend, where they were beaten 3-0 in the Premier League and 2-1 in the FA Cup back in January.

In the league game in particular, the Reds were completely outplayed by Roberto de Zerbi's side and Klopp believes his team are in much better shape for this encounter.

"If we play like we did last year, then we will get a massive knock again, but I think we will play better," he said. "That's the first step.

"I am really looking forward to it, and we have to put a few things right. We should not let it happen again. It can - because they are really good - but we will do a really big try to make sure it does not."

Nevertheless, he still had plenty of praise for the way De Zerbi has got the Seagulls flying.

"We expect a really tough game against one of the best sides in the league," said Klopp. "They are probably the best coached team in the league. You always see Brighton's football - it is incredible.

"They have had a lot of change and lost top players, one of whom we got, but still go on. They have had a few results that did not go exactly their way but that is completely normal."
