Gabriel Martinelli scored a dramatic late winner as Arsenal earned a statement victory over defending Premier League champions Manchester City at Emirates Stadium.
A largely disappointing game was given a stunning finale four minutes from time just as both sides looked certain to have to settle for a point.
Making his return from a hamstring injury as a substitute, Martinelli's strike deflected in off Nathan Ake to earn Arsenal a first league win over City since December 2015.
It was a moment that sparked wild celebrations and put the Gunners level on points with north London rivals Tottenham at the top of the table.
The biggest talking point until the goal was how Manchester City's Mateo Kovacic somehow stayed on the pitch after successive late tackles on Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.
City had the better early opportunities when Rice cleared off the line from Josko Gvardiol before Ake scooped a shot over the bar from close range.
Arsenal keeper David Raya, who had an uncertain time, was twice almost caught in possession on his line by Julian Alvarez.
But it was the home side who were elated as Martinelli, introduced off the bench for the second half, made that vital contribution.

More from Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli, this time speaking to Match of the Day: "It was so exciting. I wanted to play so much. This is what I tried to show on the pitch and be helping my team.
"When you play against the big teams it is always more special. We are so happy with this victory because we know how tough it is to play them.
"We have a really good team and really good players. Everyone is so kind and that is what we did every single game. We go into every single game trying to win every single one."

Arsenal
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, speaking to MOTD: "It is a special one. It has been a long time since the club beat Manchester City. We felt today could be the day but we needed a big performance from everyone and we had that.
"The players had incredible discipline, they won so many balls. We lacked a bit of threat but overall the atmosphere was just incredible.
"We started the second half really, really well. The subs made a huge difference.
"Martinelli made a huge effort to be in the game, nobody believed he would there. The medical staff were trembling but he was there and he was excellent.
"It sends a message to our team, to keep doing what we are doing and stay humble and then we are a very difficult team to beat."

Steve: Let’s put this result into perspective. 90 points still to play for, as a City fan, I ain’t going to lose any sleep just yet.
Mike: And suddenly the whole western world thinks City won’t win the league…..How gullible people are

Arsenal
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to Sky Sports: "So proud. It was the moment with the right people and the right players. We knew we would have to suffer and we did that. You need a big performance and the crowd too. It feels like a big win.
"I think the way we started we conceded the corner and then we gained some control and in the second half we started really good. We were there and really aggressive. The changes helped as well. The quality they produced in the goal was top.
"[City] give you a lot [of problems] and we gave them a lot of issues as well. It is not easy to get out. You need the right timing, the right movement, the right moments. I like the courage.
"You are going to have these [hard] moments against this team. You have to be direct and managed the emotions and make sure you don't get caught against this team."
On David Raya: "I think he was excellent. The way he controlled the ball. How dominant the was and how high he played. I love players with courage and David certainly has big ones.
On Martinelli: "Another player with big ones too. The physios weren't having it and he said 'I am ready to go'. Leo got injured and I looked to him and he was already ready to go."
On the win: "It is just part of the journey. You learn from every defeat. But the team is so willing. It is a joy to work with them. We have to live this moment we have to carry on."
On the Kovacic foul in the first half: "I have seen the action but it is in the past and luckily we won."

Manchester City
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to MOTD: "One deflection, We had 10-15 really good moments in the first half, they started the second half well. It was a tight game. Not many chances, one deflection.
"It was a tight game. We defended really well, the players gave everything. It is football, we lost the game. We will come back stronger.
"Rodri is an important player but he is not there for the reason everyone knows and we have to move forward. Every game is completely different.
"I know these players for many years and what we have done together. It is honour and privilege to seem them running and fighting."

Manchester City
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to Sky Sports: "That game, we started really well with two or three chances. They started the second half really well with the rhythm. The it was tight and they got a deflection goal. They won, congratulations to them.
"We tried. We did it. I think from both sides there was not a lot of chances. I think both teams did good high pressing. It was tight and in the end, one action, we lost the game.
"Ten minutes was like that [Arsenal on top] and after it was equal. We had also our moments but in general it was a tight game. Unfortunately they did it."
What do you make of your side in the final third: "Not much. I don't know how much they had shots on target. To have momentum, it was equal and then they won."
On the defeat: "Yeah, of course, we can lose in Wolves as well. Now we have two defeats in a row and then we have the internationals. Hopefully they come back fit and then we go again. Maybe it is a little bit better to be there and see wat we have to do to catch them and then [we will] when we come back.
"It has happened. In Wolves it was a difficult game. Congratulations to Arsenal. We know exactly what we have to do and we do it.
Rodri's absence a factor? "That is a stat we cannot deny it. But we put players to control more passes but they [Arsenal] are aggressive in these areas. We will come back and continue. We will move forward."

Arsenal
Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus speaking to Sky Sports: "For sure [it is a big win]. Everyone knows how hard it is to play against them. But it is not impossible to beat them. You have to congratulate them on how they worked or played, but it is our home. We had to run, fight, be efficient and score goals. I am happy for Gabi [Martinelli] that he comes on and scores. That shows how strong our team is.
"It is not easy playing three games in one week. I did this. I think I am back with my fitness. I have been fighting, running and helping the team. But as Gabi says, the whole team played amazing and we won the game."

Arsenal
Arsenal match winner Gabriel Martinelli speaking to Sky Sports: "I am not the man. I think everyone has a part in this victory. I scored the goal but it was the whole team and the staff and everyone. I am happy and the team is too.
"After that moment [my injury], I just tried to give my best to my recovery and try to be ready for the next game. Luckily it was for this game and I helped the team. I am happy with my goal and fitness.
"It gives more confidence [to us]. We know our potential and how tough it is to play against them. Today we beat them and it gives us more confidence to kick on."
FT: Arsenal 1-0 Man City
Tempers appeared to flare at the end with Erling Haaland clearly unhappy with someone, possibly from Arsenal's coaching staff, as they left the pitch.
Gunners fans have been celebrating long after the final whistle. After the pain of missing out on the title last season, they will see this as a win that suggests they could be closer to City this term.

Former Manchester United and Manchester City goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live
Today was a statement. I think some of the results they have had this season have been big statements.
This game was achieved without Saka. I think that is a statement.
It wasn't a great game but it was clear that Arteta desperately wanted to beat Guardiola.
At the end of the day, Arteta comes out of this as a winner. The goal came from his substitutes. He changed the course of the game.

Manchester City had four shots in this match – it’s the fewest shots a Pep Guardiola side has had in a top-flight game since April 2010 with Barcelona against Espanyol (also four).

To win matches and win the Premier League, you have to ride your luck sometimes. Very even affair and of course the goal [was from] that deflection.
I think it is difficult to talk about if they deserved that. Did anyone deserve to win that game? But it is what football is about at the highest level.
