Preston celebrate six wins in a row to stay top of the ChampionshipImage source, Rex

Cold, dark nights are upon us as autumn sets in, but there's still a warm glow about Deepdale as Preston North End carry on marching on at the top.

    Six wins in a row.

It was a goalfest for Reading tonight, as it was for Wigan, and Bristol City in the Championship.

It also feels like an Indian summer for Ipswich and Cardiff right now too, but for others, like Boro and Sheffield Wednesday, it might feel like a deep freeze.

There's no bedding in time now, it's time to get going.

The same applies tomorrow night of course, when we're at it again with the other 12 teams in the second tier.

Get your flask and blanket out, and give us a whirl. Until then, good night.

  2. EFL Trophy full-time headlinespublished at 22:10 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    • Reading scored nine - yes nine - against fellow League One side Exeter. That's the Royals' biggest win in 122 years.
    • Wigan hammered Leicester Under-21s 7-1.
    • Liverpool Under-21s beat Morecambe 3-0, Derby beat Lincoln 2-0, Doncaster beat Everton's youngsters and MK Dons beat Oxford.
    • A late goal from Luke Leahy saw Wycombe beat Crystal Palace's academy stars.
    • Shrewsbury and Leyton Orient beat Brighton under-21s and Fulham under-21s respectively on penalties.
    • Tottenham's academy eased to a 5-0 win away at Colchester and West Ham's youngsters enjoyed a 3-1 win away at Bristol Rovers.
    • Sutton scored a goal in the 100th minute of play to equalise against Aston Villa under-21s but then fell to a 5-4 defeat on penalties to the Villans.
  3. Sorry Cheltenham equal unwanted recordpublished at 22:08 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

Cheltenham's failure to score means they have matched the record for most games (eight) without scoring at the start of a season in football league history.

Before tonight that record belonged to Halifax Town's team of 1990-91 alone.

The only positive to say about that is that Halifax avoided relegation that season but it's a very sorry start to the campaign from the Robins.

  4. League One full-time headlinespublished at 22:06 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    • Portsmouth's 3-2 victory over Barnsley sees the move to the top of the table and stay unbeaten. Pompey scored three times in the opening 16 minutes and held on to win despite a strong second-half Barnsley fightback.
    • Burton earn a surprise 3-2 win over Port Vale to earn their first three points of the campaign.
    • Cheltenham's nightmare start to the season continues after a 2-0 defeat at Peterborough. They had two men sent off and have still slipped to the bottom of the table having failed to score a single goal in eight games.

Sheffield Wednesday's Barry BannanImage source, Rex Features

Still no win for either side, but they pick up another point at the bottom of the Championship.

Wednesday led through Anthony Musaba, before Darragh Lenihan poked Boro level.

Not a lot of smiles about Hillsborough.

  7. Postpublished at 21:57 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Sheff Wed 1-1 Middlesbrough

You know when people's say: "It was a great advert for the Championship" of a game...

Well they won't be saying it here. It's two desperate teams scuttling about. Plenty of tension but little quality.

  8. Postpublished at 21:53 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Sheff Wed 1-1 Middlesbrough

Five minutes of added time still to go at Hillsborough.

Both sides desperate for a first win and it has showed at times...

  9. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:49 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    QPR 1-1 Swansea

Lyndon Dykes' late goal earns QPR a point and denies Swansea a first league win.

Swansea led for almost the entire game through Josh Ginnelly's seventh-minute goal but they couldn't hold on for the victory.

They even finished with 10 men thanks to that late Oli Cooper red card.

    Cardiff 3-2 Coventry

Karlan Grant got on the scoresheet as Cardiff beat CoventryImage source, PA Media

Erol Bulut is just starting to work his magic at Cardiff, as they follow up south Wales derby glory with another impressive win.

Goals from Dimitrios Goutas, Karlan Grant and Kion Etete were enough, despite two from Matty Godden in return.

Still just one win for Coventry this season, while the Bluebirds have a third of their campaign.

  11. RED CARD: Oli Cooper (Swansea)published at 21:47 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    QPR 1-1 Swansea

A late red card for Swansea in the closing stages as this one looks set to end level.

Oli Cooper is shown a second yellow for a foul on goalscorer Lyndon Dykes.

Ipswich have done it - they're up to second in the table with a 1-0 win over Southampton who have now lost three games in a row.

Saints fan were streaming out before the end of the game and loud boos greet the final whistle - they are not happy with Russell Martin and his side.

Where has that early season form gone?

As for the Tractor Boys, the excellent start continues.

    Preston 2-1 Birmingham

Milutin Osmajic celebrates giving Preston the win against BirminghamImage source, PA Media

Six in a row for Preston North End and Ryan Lowe, who come from behind to win against a Birmingham side who will feel they maybe deserved more.

Jay Stansfield's net-buster put the Blues in front, but Krystian Bielik's ridiculous own-goal and a Milutin Osmajic strike turned the game the hosts favour.

Big roar at Deepdale. The league leaders march on. Blues edged out for the second game in a row. John Eustace will be frustrated.

  14. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:43 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Bristol City 4-1 Plymouth

Bristol City celebrateImage source, Rex Features

A very satisfactory evening for the hosts.

They caught Plymouth cold with a couple of early goals before the visitors hit back to make it 2-1.

But Mark Sykes made it 3-1 before the break and Harry Cornick sealed it late on.

  15. goal

GOAL: Cardiff 3-2 Coventrypublished at 21:41 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Matty Godden (90+6 mins)

    Game on perhaps?

Matty Godden is using that extra time to good effect, burying a near-post header from Jay Dasilva's cross.

Keeper got a hand to it, but too strong.

    Still they believe...

  16. Postpublished at 21:40 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

  17. goal

GOAL: QPR 1-1 Swanseapublished at 21:40 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Lyndon Dykes (90+2 mins)

    Drama!

Ilias Chair sends a dangerous ball into the box and Lyndon Dykes guides a fine header into the back of the net.

Swansea could not hold out - the question now is can they hold on for a point?

    Big finish coming up!

  18. Postpublished at 21:38 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Sheff Wed 1-1 Middlesbrough

Groans sweep around Hillsborough, after an excellent Wednesday move sees the ball released wide left for Akin Famewo to send into the box.

However, the defender shanks it, and it sails harmlessly wide. All the intricate build-up wasted by a seemingly thoughtless finish.

  19. League One updatepublished at 21:38 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

Oliver Arblaster grabs a goal for Port Vale but they still trail Burton 3-2.

Things are going bad to worse for Cheltenham at Peterborough - two goals down and now two men down as the Robins receive a second red card.

  20. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 21:36 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    Bristol City 4-1 Plymouth

So close to a sixth league goal of the season for Ryan Hardie but it comes back off the post.

    Not his, or Plymouth's night.
