John, in Norfolk: So early in the season, but for Norwich this afternoon already seems a must win. Last week at Plymouth the failings of poor recruitment showed (again).....it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that Ipswich are burning up the Championship....O T B C.

Ian B: On the way to Loftus Rd to see if my lot can we win only our second home game in 11 months? C'mon you R's.

Mansfield fans glad of the sunshine as they prepare to watch on in the uncovered stand at Gillingham - it’s second against third in League Two making this a good indicator of their promotion credentials. Should be a good game this!

League Two leaders Notts County take their eight-match unbeaten run to Colchester, knowing that three points could extend that lead, given that second placed Gillingham welcome Mansfield, in third, to Priestfield.

Crawley have won three on the spin and will hope to make it four against bottom side Sutton, while unbeaten Swindon host Grimsby.

Wrexham will have been smarting after a 5-0 defeat at Stockport last Saturday, and will have a chance to put that right against Crewe in North Wales.

The Hatters, on the back of three straight wins make the journey to East Lancashire to face Accrington.

Salford, the team in worst form in the division with five successive losses, will try to end that run at home to Newport.

Elsewhere AFC Wimbledon face Tranmere, Barrow are at home to Doncaster, Forest Green welcome Morecambe and Harrogate make the trip to Buckinghamshire to play MK Dons.

  9. League One previewpublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    #bbcefl

Unlike the Championship and League Two, the top of League One has not really taken shape. Leaders Portsmouth, unbeaten in their nine games, go to Wigan in 21st today. That is a false position for the Latics, given their eight-point deduction.

In-form Oxford have won six out of seven but that will be tested when they go to Stevenage, one place below them in third and who have made such a good start to life in League One.

It is fourth against seventh when Port Vale play Bolton. With those two in action, Barnsley in fifth, will hope to gain points on one or both of those sides, as they welcome Blackpool to Oakwell.

Fresh from their Carabao Cup exploits, Exeter are at home to Northampton, while Peterborough face Bristol Rovers and Derby, striving for consistency, face Cambridge at Pride Park.

At the bottom, it is a first game in charge of Cheltenham for Darrell Clarke as they try to add to their solitary point with a trip to Lincoln.

Fleetwood are also looking for a first win and have their ninth attempt as Leyton Orient head up to the Fylde coast.

Elsewhere, troubled Reading welcome struggling Burton, out-of-form Shrewsbury play in-form Charlton and Carlisle have made another journey, this time to Wycombe.

Struggling Stoke desperately need to pick up some points after a run of five games without a win has left them languishing near the bottom three. They travel to Bristol City who are looking to bounce-back from defeat to Leicester last week, albeit one that wielded a decent performance.

Following a decent start to the season, Birmingham’s run of four games without a win has seen them slip to 11th. They host Norwich who were chastened in a 6-2 thumping by Plymouth last week – a result captain Kenny McLean called “embarrassing”.

Three wins in a row has sent Cardiff City soaring up the table to seventh – a sight that will have all Bluebirds fans beaming after the last few seasons. Rotherham make the trip to South Wales today having not won any of the last six meetings between the two.

QPR and Coventry are two sides not setting the Championship alight so far this season with both tied on just eight points after eight games. QPR haven’t won at home in eight games while Coventry have dropped more points from winning positions than any other team in the league.

  12. Middlesbrough's leaky defencepublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Watford v Middlesbrough (15:00 BST)

A first league win of the campaign for Middlesbrough last weekend against Southampton certainly eased some of the weight sure to be sitting on boss Michael Carrick's shoulders.

That being said they have conceded 15 goals this season - 10 of those have come on the road and they have not kept a clean sheet in their last 17 league games away from home. You have to go back to October 1966 to find a longer run.

Watford's inconsistency from last season has continued this term and they start the afternoon in 16th, no where near where they want to be if promotion is the aim.

They've won just once in seven games and Valerian Ismael might start feeling some of that same pressure as Carrick if that doesn't start changing soon

  13. Can Preston’s unbeaten run continue?published at 14:41 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

Preston v West Brom (15:00 BST)

With October creeping over the horizon, Preston remain the only team in the Championship yet to lose a game this season.

With 20 points already in the bank, Preston could go top today depending on Ipswich’s result and with Leicester not playing until tomorrow.

Today’s opponents West Brom are in a less desirable position, with three draws – two which were 0-0 – in their last three matches.

Perhaps more worryingly for Carlos Corberan is his team’s form on the road. The Baggies have won only two of their last 14 away games –only Watford and Rotherham have won fewer.

Millwall v Swansea City (15:00 BST)

Millwall have been rather inconsistent so far this season, with impressive wins over the likes of Rotherham United, Stoke City and Middlesbrough being mixed in with losses to Leeds United, Bristol City and Norwich City.

They do remain handily placed to challenge the top six as we conclude the second month of the campaign though.

Gary Rowett has made just one alteration from his side's goalless draw at West Bromwich Albion last weekend. Kevin Nisbet returns from injury to replace Tom Bradshaw in the Lions' starting line-up.

As for Swansea, they have made their worst start to a league campaign for 32 years but did register their first Championship win under Michael Duff last time out by beating strugglers Sheffield Wednesday 3-0.

Duff has made three changes from that triumph over the Owls as Harry Darling, Bashir Humphreys and Jerry Yates replace the injured Nathan Wood, Kristian Pedersen and Josh Ginnelly.

    Hull v Plymouth (15:00 BST)

A seven game unbeaten run has seen Hull climb up to fourth in the table with defeat on the opening day to Norwich the only blotch on their scorecard so far this campaign.

More pleasingly perhaps for manager Liam Rosenior is that his side have only lost two out of 17 home games during his reign, with none in their last eight.

The side trying to end that run at the MKM Stadium today is Plymouth, a team unenviably yet to win on the road this season…

On the plus side for Argyle, they make the long journey up north buoyed by their 6-2 thrashing of Norwich last week which will surely have boosted their confidence.

  16. Darren Moore searching for first Terriers winpublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Huddersfield v Ipswich (15:00 BST)

Darren Moore on the touchline for HuddersfieldImage source, Rex Features

After taking a dramatically late point from his first game in charge of Huddersfield on Monday in the 1-1 draw with Coventry, Darren Moore hosts his first game at home as he looks for the first win of his tenure.

The task won’t be easy as the Terriers welcome high-flying Ipswich to the John Smith’s Stadium, a team second in the league and with four consecutive wins under their belts.

Ipswich have won all four of their opening games on the road this season – if they win their fifth today it will be the first time in their history they’ve done so.

Huddersfield might be 17th in the table at the start of play but they haven’t lost in their last four league games which Moore will no doubt want to start building on.

Southampton's dominant first half earns them their first win since August.

Leeds couldn't fight their way back into the game and their six-game unbeaten run comes to an abrupt end.

Jubilation and relief at St Mary's.

That's Russell Martin's biggest win as Saints manager.

It feels like Leeds have dominated possession this second half and they've kept Southampton's defenders and Gavin Bazunu busy.

But the quality on that final ball has just been lacking a little.

    Saints have defended valiantly.
