A positive if you're a Southampton fan of course is, that they haven’t conceded yet.

When they played Sunderland and Leicester earlier this month both opponents scored within the game’s opening 60 seconds.

But to be fair to Russell Martin’s men their defence has been better the last two games.

    What a start from Saints.

Adam Armstrong makes a superb run between two Leeds defenders on the nearside edge of the box.

Kyle Walker-Peters feeds him the ball and Armstrong collects and clips from close range past the keeper on a tight angle.

The referee blows the whistle at St Mary’s, on a mild overcast day on the south coast, and we are under way in the Championship’s early kick-off.

Can Saints stop the rot? Or will Leeds continue on their impressive unbeaten run?

    Should be good, this one.

Leeds have set their stall out really well recently.

There is no doubt they are expected to win here today at St Mary's and Daniel Farke knows that.

I don’t think Russell Martin knows his best Southampton team yet and that hasn’t been helped by a bad run of results.

The four changes suggest to me that he still hasn’t found the squad he is looking for.

I’m a little bit worried really.

  9. Win over Leeds 'would be huge' – Martinpublished at 12:23 British Summer Time 30 September 2023

    Southampton v Leeds (12:30 BST)

Is it too early to hit the panic button on Russell Martin at Southampton? Probably.

He got his side off to a terrific start despite falling away recently.

The 37-year-old has been quick to defend his players in recent weeks, saying many of them still have plenty of “scar-tissue” after getting relegated from the Premier League last season.

“Results have been unacceptable but as a group of players and staff we have to pull through this difficult moment and stay together," he said.

Saints have been booed at home recently, with supporters growing frustrated with their team's disappointing performances.

“I think at the moment when the players feel fear it is of making a mistake on the pitch and the reaction from the supporters,” Martin added.

“We need to see a performance that looks more like us [versus Leeds].

“It's going to be a really good game and it will be huge if we win.”

Both Southampton and Leeds were relegated from the Premier League last season and both sides had a reshuffle over the summer and brought in new managers.

So far, things aren’t quite working out as planned for Saints (three wins, one draw and four losses) but United have made a strong start to their 2023-24 campaign (three wins, four draws and one loss).

Russell Martin’s south coast side have lost four in a row and conceded 12 goals in the process in truly shocking fashion where often defenders looked lost and confused in the face of their goal-hungry opponents.

Meanwhile, United’s German boss Daniel Farke – who briefly coached Martin at Norwich – has them on a six-game unbeaten run and they haven’t conceded a goal since the end of August.

Southampton have won six of their last nine home league games against Leeds.

But considering their current form and home record - one win from four at St Mary’s this season – a betting man would be wise to back the in-form visitors.
