I agree last night was a wasted opportunity for Spurs, but the League Cup isn’t the “easy” trophy option people think. Since Swansea won in 12-13, Man City have won 6, Man Utd 2, Liverpool 1, Chelsea 1. Pretty grim reading for anyone outside the biggest spenders.

  4. Spurs defender Spence in Leeds loan switchpublished at 10:31 British Summer Time 30 August 2023

We have had news this morning of a player heading out of the Premier League, for this season at least.

Leeds United have signed full-back Djed Spence on a season-long loan from Tottenham.

The 23-year-old came through Fulham's academy before joining Middlesbrough, where he made 70 appearances.

He then helped Nottingham Forest to promotion to the Premier League during a loan spell in 2021-22.

Spence joined Spurs last summer in a £20m deal, but made only six substitute appearances before joining French side Rennes on loan in January.

  6. Man Utd interested in Chelsea's Cucurellapublished at 10:12 British Summer Time 30 August 2023

Manchester United have a problem at left-back, which could be solved by the arrival of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea.

With Luke Shaw and Tyrrell Malacia both out for extended periods, Erik ten Hag's options are reduced to Diogo Dalot switching from right-back and 20-year-old Alvaro Fernandez, who is untested at Premier League level.

United are looking at loan options, which include Marcos Alonso, who is currently at Barcelona. But they have also made contact with Chelsea over Marc Cucurella, who is out of favour at Stamford Bridge.

If Ten Hag got Cucurella, who was so impressive at Brighton, it could prove to be an inspired move.

  8. Spain FA president awaits fate over Hermoso kisspublished at 09:53 British Summer Time 30 August 2023

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

There are four ways to get rid of [Spain FA president] Luis Rubiales: a vote of no confidence [from the federation], the [Spanish] state prosecutor is investigating, the biggest sporting judicial body [in Spain] the TAD is also trying to get him suspended, and Fifa have started an investigation. All in all – you look at the federation and the people who are in charge are the people that Rubiales put in charge. So things are going pretty slow and frustrating for most of us who think that a big change is needed… He feels that he can defend himself to a point that he stays in charge.

The list is at the moment is 81 players who have decided that they will not play [for Spain]. They didn’t name him but in the statement a few days back they were actually saying as long as the directors don’t change then they will not play. They want a restructuring of the federation. And to be honest the ones in charge – all men – the 19 members of the board have said they want that as well – a restructuring and a change. It’s just not happening at the pace everybody wanted.

So, the board of the FA, instead having a vote of no confidence against Rubiales which would have really started that restructuring from the top, all they did was say, ‘We want you to resign’ knowing full well that he wasn’t going to resign. So the next step is that vote of no confidence but a third of the men in charge don’t really want Rubiales to go. So who is going to push him out? We just don’t know.

  9. 'Rubiales should go' - Toonepublished at 09:45 British Summer Time 30 August 2023

England's Ella Toone has said Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales ''should do the right thing'' and resign after he kissed player Jenni Hermoso on the lips after the World Cup final.

The final, which took place on 20 August, saw Spain beat England 1-0 to win the trophy for the first time.

As Hermoso collected her winner medal, Rubiales kissed her. Here is what Toone said in full:

Roy Hodgson has praised the job Plymouth Argyle boss Steven Schumacher is doing after Crystal Palace's 4-2 win in the Carabao Cup at the Pilgrims.

Argyle led 2-0 early in the second period before Palace scored three times in five minutes to set up victory.

The hosts, who won the League One title last season, made nine changes and dominated the first 55 minutes of the game.

"I'd like to say we were surprised by how good Plymouth were, but we weren't," Hodgson told BBC Sport.

"We knew they were very good and made it clear to the players that this is a good team you're playing.

"We thought when they made changes, 'Maybe we'll be lucky, maybe the ones they've brought in won't be as good,' but they were."

Until the 55th minute it looked like Plymouth were comfortably and deservedly going through. A stunning curler from Luke Cundle almost lifted the roof off Home Park.

Crystal Palace looked out of it at that point but wily old Roy Hodgson had a trick or two up his sleeve, namely some real Premier League quality coming off the bench.

On came Eze, Ayew and Schlupp [who all made assists] and Plymouth quite simply didn't know what hit them. I'll tell you what hit them, three goals in four minutes.

Crystal Palace scored three goals in five second-half minutes to come from 2-0 down to win at Plymouth Argyle in the Carabao Cup second round.

Ben Waine gave the Championship side a flying start as he fired in from close range early on, and Luke Cundle superbly doubled their lead 33 seconds after the interval.

But Palace responded in devastating fashion as Odsonne Edouard converted from close range and Jean-Philippe Mateta tapped in soon after.

Mateta then blasted in his second before Eberechi Eze fed the French striker to ruthlessly complete his first hat-trick for the Premier League side.

League Two Salford stunned Championship side Leeds with an epic penalty shootout victory to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The fourth-tier side eventually went through 9-8 on penalties after Ossama Ashley scored at the second attempt when his initial effort was saved by Karl Darlow but the keeper was adjudged to have come off his line.

The hosts had taken the lead against the run of play before the break when former Leeds striker Matt Smith powered home a header from 10 yards out.

Pascal Struijk poked home an equaliser for the away side, who also hit the woodwork through Crysencio Summerville and Sam Greenwood.

But the Ammies won out on spot-kicks to reach the third round of the competition for the first time in their history.

They will now go in the hat with Premier League sides, including Manchester United, for the third-round draw.

One of the problems they [Fulham] might have is strength in depth. They had a few players who had to come off which will be a slight concern for Marco Silva.

Overall, I really like their attitude. That is why I think they might have a good season. I think they will be well clear of the relegation zone because there is an attitude and commitment about them. I think that was shown against Arsenal and even more so [in this game].

When Tottenham put it on to them they stood firm and they have got some top quality players in certain positions.

I am sure the manager will be delighted with what he has seen, he would just like, before that window closes, to have one or two more additions to help them out when it comes to scoring goals.
