    Aberdeen 0-0 Hibernian

    Tyrone Smith
    BBC Scotland

A big opportunity for Connor Barron for Aberdeen today. A player of undoubted quality, who hasn't had anything like the amount of game time he would have wanted for one reason or another. Can he stake a claim?

  2. Postpublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Aberdeen 0-0 Hibernian

Long balls very much the order of the day so far at Pittodrie. From one such attack, Hibs win a free-kick and Joe Newell's delivery is header over by Will Fish.

    Hearts 0-0 Motherwell

A very scrappy opening at Tynecastle. Yutaro Oda has been caught on the ball on the right a few times.

Motherwell passing it around a little better, but Hearts have had the best chance - a ball played over the top only for Lawrence Shankland to err... shank wide.

  6. 'Incentive is there' for Hibs - Graypublished at 14:58 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Aberdeen v Hibernian (15:00)

Hibernian interim manager David Gray tells BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound: "Just a bit freshness. All the players are itching and raring to go. It's just a couple of different things we wanted to try.

"They're always important games. This is a great opportunity for us. The incentive's there, if we win we go above Aberdeen. Very good side, they're very aggressive the way they play.

"There's been a lot of games. If we can go and get three points we can go and take stock after this."

  7. Robson explains Clarkson absencepublished at 14:58 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Aberdeen v Hibernian (15:00)

Aberdeen manager Barry Robson tells BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound: "Leighton, over the last couple of days, he's really struggling with his calf. We've got to be careful with that. Connor Barron comes in to give us fresh energy in there.

"There shouldn't be [a European hangover]. We've got to try and win this game today. The fixture list has been heavy for us. We've been away from home a lot.

"I'm really confident and I think the fans should be. We look in good shape. We're alright, we'll get stronger and stronger. We know it's going to be difficult. We need to bring our A game."

  8. 'There's not a lot to tweak' - Kettlewellpublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

Heart of Midlothian v Motherwell (15:00)

Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell tells BBC Scotland about the one change to his starting XI: "It worked for us last week. There's been disappointment with Harry Paton's injuries but he gave us energy and impetus from the middle of the park. We want to replicate that today. We need that aggression and drive and Harry gives us that.

"We've been decent. There's not a lot to tweak and twist and change. I'm not a knee-jerk guy. We've been working to a plan, that's why there's only one change.

"I always speak about pushing boundaries. Four games into a season isn't relevant in the grand scheme of things, but we need these little carrots to change a mentality."

  9. Naismith wants to avoid another 'flat' displaypublished at 14:53 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

Heart of Midlothian v Motherwell (15:00)

Hearts' technical director Steven Naismith tells BBC Scotland: "After the European games, it's been slightly flat. We have to learn from that.

"Peter [Haring] had produced some good performances with Cammy [Devlin] before he got injured, they have a good connection. He's trained all week. It's good to have him back, he understands what we want to do and he brings a calmness.

[On poor form] "It's something we need to deal with. The defeat in the previous round against Rosenborg - the goals conceded were poor but the reaction was good. The Dundee performance was poor and the goal we lost summed it all up.

"The home game against PAOK could've been a draw, could've been a win. During the week, we had a similar amount of chances to PAOK but we defended very poorly. Every chance PAOK got, they scored.

"We have to defend better. Domestically, teams give us respect at Tynecastle but they try and counter us. We need to be a threat but then lock out the game when teams think we're vulnerable."

  10. 'Nowhere near where I want us to be'published at 14:51 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    FT: Rangers 0-1 Celtic

More from Brendan Rodgers on the VAR disallowed goal for Rangers.

"We had controlled the game up until that point, so I would have been disappointed." he said.

"Obviously Gustaf [Lagerbielke] has to be quicker getting his passes away, but it looks like he's just been nicked from behind.

"Rangers will probably say it was never a foul, but there's enough officials looking at it, and they obviously deemed it to be a foul.

"It's still very early in the season. You don't win anything in September. We've just got to stay calm. This is a very young group that's missing some influential players at the moment.

"Once we get them back, they're only going to get better. In spells we've looked good, but it's nowhere near where I want us to be."

  11. 'The players stood up' - Rodgerspublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    FT: Rangers 0-1 Celtic

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers tells BBC Scotland: "It's a massive result for the squad when you consider virtually half the team is unavailable.

"I said to them before the game that I need my men today. You need to come here, with 50,000 baying for blood, you need to come and play like a man, even though you're really young players.

"We had chances to score before we did, but we forced one or two passes. It's a great finish from Kyogo, and it puts us in a position that I thought we deserved at half-time.

"The players stood up. The two centre-halves - Liam Scales was outstanding today. It's a fantastic win for us.

"A lot of the new players needed that big win to feel what the intensity is like at a club like Celtic. Second half, we had to show resilience and fight. To come here, keep a clean sheet, and win with not one supporter in the stadium is a brilliant win."

I tell you what, what a day at Pittodrie - the sun is shining down and it is scorchio. A perfect day for football, well watching it anyway, I wouldn't fancy running around for 90 minutes in that heat.

  14. 'We had more moments than Celtic'published at 14:40 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    FT: Rangers 0-1 Celtic

More from Michael Beale, with the Rangers boss asked about the loud boos at full-time.

"I completely understand [the fans' reaction at full-time]. We want the expectations to be high. The fans today stuck by their team for a long time, and it's natural that if you don't get a result in the derby that fans show their frustration.

"We have to dust ourselves down and come back. We have to go on a run. There's 34 games to go. The most important thing is focusing on getting this group consistently playing to a stronger level than it is right now.

"We went with a really bold, attacking team, and that was then added to by the boys that come off the sides. We had a right go, we chased the game, we had more moments than Celtic, and we didn't take them."

  15. 'A desperately disappointing day' - Bealepublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    FT: Rangers 0-1 Celtic

Rangers manager Michael Beale tells BBC Scotland: "It's been a rough week. Today, I thought the performance merited more in the game.

"I thought we started the game quite well - obviously we score an offside goal, and then the VAR call. Having seen it back, he kicks Cyriel, so I think it's a harsh call. I think that's one that's gone against us, but there's a lot of time to play in the game.

"The goal is an error on our part, a huge error, and second half, we pushed and pushed, but you'd like us to be more inventive and ruthless, because the chances were there. It's a desperately disappointing day for everybody. We're behind them, and we have a lot of catching up to do. I thought we were strong in the game.

"There's areas we can improve on, but we had the moments - we were in front of Joe Hart two or three times and our last pass or shot wasn't good enough. That's where the frustration is. We have to come back stronger after the international break."

  16. Dons and Hibs seek first winpublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    Aberdeen v Hibernian (15:00)

    Tyrone Smith
    BBC Scotland at Pittodrie

Both Aberdeen and Hibernian will be hoping there is no European hangover as they return to domestic action.

The sides must forget all of that and instead focus on a game which, even at this early stage of the season, falls very much in to the ‘important’ category.

After three rounds of Premiership fixtures, neither has mustered a win, with Aberdeen amassing just the two points so far, although that is two more than their managerless opponents have managed.

A win would be the perfect tonic heading in to the international break.

  17. 'Celtic are champions for a reason'published at 14:30 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    FT: Rangers 0-1 Celtic

    Tom English
BBC Scotland's chief sports writer on Sportsound

Rangers will look to the goal in the first-half that wasn't and they might use that as an excuse but they had so much possession, so many chances, they just weren't good enough to break down a Celtic defence which was teetering at times.

Battling through their own inadequacies, they found a way to win, and credit to them. Not many people thought they were going to win today given the defensive casualties, a lack of confidence, 50,000 fans against them, but they did.

They're the champions for a reason and Rangers are the pretenders for a reason.

  18. 'We had to dig in' - Scalespublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

    FT: Rangers 0-1 Celtic

Player of the match Liam Scales has been talking to Sky Sports, along with centre-half partner Gustaf Lagerbielke.

"We got a couple of disappointing results, so to come here and win is massive," the Celtic defender said.

"We finish the first round of fixtures on a win, so it's good. We had to dig in and defend - they're a good side, so we showed a lot of character.

"We've been put together, we're still getting to know each other, but I think we've done well. We're happy playing together."

Lagerbielke was involved in one of the game's key moments, when Cyriel Dessers pinched possession and set up Kemar Roofe to score, but the Swedish defender agrees with VAR's decision to disallow the goal.

"I took it forward, and then I got fouled - it was a foul, I thought so," he said.

"It was tough to come here, but we stuck together, showed a lot of team spirit. Keep your head calm, there's a lot of noise, lot of emotions, and just try to focus on what we do."

  19. Kettlewell swaps one; Gent and Shaw on benchpublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

Heart of Midlothian v Motherwell (15:00)

Last week's Motherwell goal-hero Harry Paton is rewarded with a start at Hearts - the club he joined when he first moved to Scotland as a teenager.

Deadline day signings Georgie Gent and Oli Shaw - the former Hibs, Ross County and Kilmarnock striker - are named among the substitutes. Joining them is Joe Efford, the man who drops out for Paton.

Brodie Spencer, fresh from a Northern Ireland under-21 call-up, retains his place in the side after an impressive debut against Kilmarnock.

  20. Hearts change three from PAOK pummellingpublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 3 September 2023

Heart of Midlothian v Motherwell (15:00)

There's a big surprise in the Hearts line-up, with Peter Haring returning far earlier than thought from an ankle injury picked up in the goalless draw with Kilmarnock in August.

Yutaro Oda is also back in the starting XI, alongside Alex Lowry - the only positive in Hearts' 4-0 loss to PAOK in Greece through the week.

Stephen Kinglsey hobbled off in that game and misses out completely. Toby Sibbick and Kenneth Vargas drop to the bench. No sign of Beni Baningime or Odel Offiah.
