FT: Ayr United 0-4 Partick Thistle

Ayr United manager Lee Bullen tells BBC Scotland: "I thought in the first half that we were well in the game.

"When we lose the second goal we just had a mad 20/25 minutes where we just didn't do enough.

"We've just got to hold our hands up, we've got to do better defensively."

  3. 'We're delighted' - Doolanpublished at 21:48 British Summer Time 15 September 2023

FT: Ayr United 0-4 Partick Thistle

Partick Thistle manager Kris Doolan tells BBC Scotland: "Delighted [with the result], as you would expect.

"We had to defend for large parts of the first half but we started brightly.

"Our goalkeeper was called upon and came up with some good saves.

"To come here and score four, this is a difficult place to come to, so we're absolutely delighted."

Despite Brian Graham giving Thistle an early lead inside the first two minutes, it felt as if the game was keenly poised at the interval.

The visitors obviously thought otherwise as they blew Ayr away in the second half through a sensational Steven Lawless double.

His first was a long-range peach of a strike with his second of similar quality from closer in.

Tomi Adeloye showed his clinical capabilities to score with his first touch of the game after Lawless lofted the ball through for him.

The second and third goals were so important for Partick Thistle and Steven Lawless is my man of the match tonight.

It would be a mere consolation now but Jamie Murphy comes close to cancelling out Thistle's clean sheet.

Despite having little of note to deal with in this half, Jamie Sneddon once again denies Ayr a goal, though.

    Cool, calm, and collected.

Lawless sets this one up, dinking a ball over the top for Adeloye to pass into the corner having just come on as a sub.

His first touch tonight against his old club. Clinical.

    Aw deary me.

Nick McAlister goes down on the touchline and the cameras catch him showing the ref what's wrong...a dislocated finger.

Now, I'm no doctor but fingers shouldn't hang like that.

Thankfully it's not dinner time and thankfully he's back on the pitch in no time.

Jamie Murphy tries to conjure up some attacking intent for the hosts but it's simply not happening as his edge-of-the-area pass is easily cut out.

It's been a frustrating night for the Honest Men.

Three nil is harsh on Ayr United tonight, but the facts are they're three nil down at home.

Are they going to have enough about them to dig themselves out of this bad start to the season they're having at the moment?

Thistle have brought a fair few new faces in, but it's the old guard doing the business tonight.

It's unforgivable that Ayr not once, but twice have allowed Stevie Lawless to roam in from the right, unmarked, and let fly on his left.

He's been doing it for years. And he's mastered it.

    Steven Lawless

    Well, that's that then.

It's not quite as eye-catching as his first but it's a great goal nonetheless.

Lawless drifts in from the right-hand side and is allowed to get to the edge of the D before drilling a shot towards Albinson.

A slight, yet cruel, deflection lets the ball squirm underneath the diving keeper.

Ayr's poor start to the season looks set to continue.

I was just typing, 'there's an air of optimism among the home support,'... then, Stevie Lawless lets rip.

    My goodness. What a finish.

Charlie Albinson has played a blinder tonight, but he'd have to clone himself 10 times over to stop that from going in.

    Simply stunning.

    Steven Lawless

A peach. No other word for it.

Lawless collects it on the touchline as Aaron Muirhead spreads the play with a raking, firm pass.

Thistle's number 11 drives towards Ayr's defence after the pass completely opens up the angle for him, and the defenders just drop deeper.

He has acres of space about 25 yards out and he unleashes a venomous left-footed strike that rockets into the net.

    What a strike.

Ooft. Some effort from Kerr McInroy.

He opens up his body just outside the box and tries to bend one all the way out and back in with his left foot but it zips narrowly past the post.

You'd imagine an on-loan Killie player would like a goal here of all places.
