  2. It's just one performance - Bealepublished at 22:41 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    FT: Rangers 1-0 Real Betis

More from Rangers manager Michael Beale in his post-match presser...

"First half, we had big moments - Rabbi running away. At that moment when he goes through, you wonder if we'll be here talking about that moment.

"We didn't show enough belief with the ball. We spoke about that at half-time. Until about the 35th minute, we didn't settle with the ball. That's something that is reoccurring. Second half, we were much better everywhere.

"It comes down to belief and going for it. We've been here too often in big games and fallen a bit short. Tonight, in a tight game against a good team, we hit the bar, hit the post, had a one-on-one and scored. Ultimately we deserved to win the game.

"For this group, we've had a few bangs on the head. We've heard it loud and clear from the outside. Nothing's done. It's just one performance. There was lots I'm happy with, but lots to improve on."

  3. 'There could be momentum for Beale now'published at 22:37 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    FT: Rangers 1-0 Real Betis

Rangers fan Tommy McIntyre, from the This Is Ibrox podcast, tells BBC Sportsound: "There was a big need for Michael Beale, for the squad, for the fans and the club coming into this game. I thought Rangers weathered the storm in first half. Second half, I think Rangers dominated.

"The more tangible thing for the supporters going home tonight, in that second half, is they got to the start of what Michael Beale is trying to do with this team. That little bit of fast movement, that little bit of chaos up front.

"There's definitely been pressure. I think when you've had the run of results that he's had, and the run of poor performances side by side with that, he's lived with that. I'm not sure he's always helped himself, or the players have helped him with the performances.

"I think there could be a little bit of momentum now. Ultimately though, nights like tonight will not define Michael Beale. Rangers can take belief from this, but it won't ease the domestic pressure. We have to see that run of consistency now."

  4. I don't remember Rangers chances - Pellegrinipublished at 22:34 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    FT: Rangers 1-0 Real Betis

Real Betis boss Manuel Pellegrini: "I don't really remember chances at goal for Rangers in this game.

"We have another clear three or four chances that their goalkeeper saved very well. I'm happy with the way we played.

"You must score if you want to win. We didn't score. We lost."

    FT: Rangers 1-0 Real Betis

The big games keep coming for Rangers.

The next three are at home, with league games against Motherwell and Aberdeen bookending a Viaplay Cup quarter-final with Livingston.

It's then back to the Europa League in a fortnight as Michael Beale's side travel to Aris Limassol.

Jack Butland has settled in brilliantly at Rangers. I think he's been excellent.

It's such an important position in terms of building that foundation and getting clean sheets.

  7. 'Beale needed a big result'published at 22:25 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    FT: Rangers 1-0 Real Betis

    Steven Thompson
Former Rangers striker on BBC Sportsound

Off the back of the Old Firm, Michael Beale needed some big results. He got one at St Johnstone, he got one tonight.

The performance wasn't brilliant, but they were playing a good team in Real Betis. At times they rode their luck a wee bit, but they showed their quality in the second half.

It's a huge result to get off to a brilliant start. They can win all their home games. That'll be the hardest home game they have. This next month is absolutely massive.

They have four, winnable, home games. They can get the momentum going and it'll do their confidence the world of good.

  8. 'No more than Rangers deserve'published at 22:22 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    FT: Rangers 1-0 Real Betis

    Derek McInnes
Former Rangers player on TNT Sports

I thought they had real, concerted pressure in the second half. It just felt as though the goal was coming.

When the goal comes, Kemar Roofe does really well. It's no more than Rangers deserve.

You can get a feel-good factor from a European run. I think this group is wide open, there's no real standout and Rangers can take on any of the teams

  9. Big step in right direction - Bealepublished at 22:19 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    FT: Rangers 1-0 Real Betis

Rangers manager Michael Beale is delighted, particularly with centre-back Ben Davies.

"A lot has been said about [Davies] on the outside," he tells TNT Sports. "His last two performances have been outstanding."

On keeper Jack Butland: "We've signed a fantastic goalkeeper. He wanted to show everyone his true level. He's already shown that in his short time."

On tonight's victory: "We had other chances, it wasn't prefect. We need to improve but it's a big step in the right direction.

"The pressure for me and these players is just around the corner. We'll enjoy tonight then get right back on it.

"I've got one of the best jobs in the world. You have to enjoy this."

  10. A potential launchpad?published at 22:16 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    FT: Rangers 1-0 Real Betis

    Kheredine Idessane
    BBC Sport Scotland at Ibrox

Victories over Spanish opponents don't come all that often for Scottish sides, so Rangers will rightly relish this one.

It feels like a big step forward for manager Michael Beale this season. He's already said his side "should" qualify from this group, and he's a big step towards that with three home points banked against an enterprising, skilful and highly technical Real Betis side who're likely to be Rangers' big rivals for top spot.

The home side weren't great in the first half but went up a gear in the second and took their big chance when it came. Smiles all round Ibrox and a sense that this could be the launchpad for their season.

  11. Let Sima have the goal - Daviespublished at 22:14 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    FT: Rangers 1-0 Real Betis

Rangers centre-back Ben Davies tells TNT Sports: "Let the striker take that [goal] and I'll have the clean sheet.

"It was a good game. We were disappointed we weren't doing so well on the ball. Second half we did better. It was a big second half for us."

Rangers striker Abdallah Sima adds: "The most important thing is the win."

  13. 'This could be Beale's turning point'published at 22:04 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    FT: Rangers 1-0 Real Betis

    Lee McCulloch
Former Rangers midfielder on BBC Sportsound

Right from the beginning of the second half, Rangers were at them. They were on the front foot, the defence was high.

It was a matter of time when the goal came. It was all positive. Then in the last 10 minutes, the defence dropped deep but they did enough.

This could be the turning point for Michael Beale. He'll be the happiest person in this stadium. He'll have been feeling the pressure, hearing all the noise.

  14. Who got the final touch?published at 22:01 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

Rangers' group campaign gets off to a winning start.

A real hard-fought win over the La Liga visitors thanks to a goal that was either scored by Abdallah Sima or Ben Davies.

Still have no idea who got the final touch.

Although Betis have come into it more and Rangers have dropped deeper, there's not been too many scares.

There's not been much for them to do defensively, they still look reasonably comfortable.
