  1. CLOSE!published at 14:26 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Republic of Ireland 1-0 Northern Ireland

The Republic are picking up where they left off at the end of the first half and are starting to create chance after chance in the second.

First the ball falls to Lucy Quinn on the edge of the box, and she spins before Sarah McFadden slides in to reclaim possession before Quinn can get a shot off.

Kyra Carusa then meets Katie McCabe's cross, with Rachel Furness diverting the ball behind before Denise O'Sullivan can latch onto it.

Furness is alert to clear away McCabe's resulting corner that was destined to find Caitlin Hayes.

Just before the hour mark, the Republic opt to make the first change of the game as Heather Payne is replaced by the exciting Abbie Larkin.

The 18-year old striker has just signed for Glasgow City and impressed in her World Cup cameos.

  3. CLOSE!published at 14:19 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Republic of Ireland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Another trademark delivery from Katie McCabe causes problems for Northern Ireland, with Lucy Quinn ghosting in behind Abbie Magee, but she is inches away from getting on the end of the cross.

A warning sign for Northern Ireland at the threat the Republic continue to pose.

There are plenty of numbers upfront now and I think Tayna has obviously told them that they need to get out of their own half now.

It could be a case of taking a risk now because what have they got to lose whenever they're 1-0 down? They can go on the front foot rather than just sitting back and maybe absorbing the pressure.

  5. Postpublished at 14:15 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Republic of Ireland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland have certainly pushed further forward in the second period. They have shown some neat interchanges of passes, but they are lacking that killer final ball to fashion a clear-cut chance.

  6. CLOSE!published at 14:11 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Republic of Ireland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Chances at both ends early in the second half.

A clipped ball into the box sees Callaghan challenge Courtney Brosnan for the ball, with the goalkeeper dropping it but quickly smothering.

The Republic then go close at the other end, with Demi Vance forced to sweep the ball off the line after Kyra Carusa had got in behind the defence and slid the ball between Shannon Turner's legs.

  7. NI need more players across the waterpublished at 14:08 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

I think with Tanya coming in she has a big aim, not just on the pitch but off the pitch to possibly get people across the water a bit more and maybe to get into that professional environment.

That's maybe something we're lacking in and I think if she has that investment to get us across, to get the players that want to do it and then that will help us moving forward.

  8. KICK-OFFpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Republic of Ireland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Kyra Carusa kicks off the second period for the Republic, who will be keen to build on their momentum in the second half.

Going in with 1-0, you'd be ok with it. You can come out and put in a good performance after that, it's just a matter of how they're going to react and find a solution for what's going on.

We do need to get more on the attack because as we said we have no support. hopefully we can get the likes of Emily Wilson and Caragh Hamilton in the game going forward in the second half.

We only have one outlet with Simone Magill upfront and she's not really got anyone around her at the moment so hopefully we can find an outlet when we head into the second half.

  11. HALF-TIMEpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Republic of Ireland 1-0 Northern Ireland

The whistle goes for half-time and the Republic of Ireland lead at the break courtesy of Lucy Quinn's deflected strike.

In truth, it could have been a greater margin at the Aviva, with Shannon Turner denying Kyra Carusa, and Sarah McFadden clearing one off the line from Quinn.

Katie McCabe and Denise O'Sullivan have grown into the game and have been key for the Republic.

Northern Ireland have yet to test Courtney Brosnan and have struggled to get out of their half, but they do only trail by a goal and will want to produce a better attacking performance in the second half.

That's something we need to look into, it seems to be second balls that are dropped in from the box that we just aren't clearing well enough at the moment.

It's a great, great block from McFadden.

    What a block!

Sarah McFadden has been Northern Ireland's best player over the past two years and she's right on the money there to clear the ball off the line.

She just gets better and better.

  14. CLOSE!published at 13:48 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Republic of Ireland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Sarah McFadden makes a crucial intervention to deny Lucy Quinn and the Republic's second goal of the game.

Katie McCabe again puts in an inviting cross, which Denise O'Sullivan gets on the end of. She heads the ball into Kyra Carusa, who tees up Quinn.

The Birmingham City player's low shot was blocked on the line by McFadden and Northern Ireland clear.

Half-time can't come soon enough for Tanya Oxtoby's team, who are tiring.

  15. 'It's just important for Northern Ireland not to panic'published at 13:45 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Republic of Ireland 1-0 Northern Ireland

    Jackie Burns

The Republic definitely have a spring to their step now, they've upped a gear and have made it a bit more quicker with everything going forward.

I think it's just important for Northern Ireland not to panic, we've seen that a few times in the past, and hopefully they can just settle down into the game and make it to the half and then reset.

  17. CLOSE!published at 13:43 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Republic of Ireland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland will be relieved to get to half-time only one goal down as they are struggling to stem the flow of the Republic of Ireland's set-pieces.

This time Megan Connolly whips in a free-kick from the left, which Kyra Carusa gets minimal connection with, and she can't direct her header on target.

  18. CLOSE!published at 13:41 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Republic of Ireland 1-0 Northern Ireland

Lucy Quinn goes close again from the second phase of a corner. Katie McCabe's delivery from the right eventually falls to Quinn, and she drives into the box before seeing her lofted effort from a narrow angle go just over the crossbar with Shannon Turner back-pedalling.

  19. 'We can't switch off'published at 13:41 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Republic of Ireland 1-0 Northern Ireland

    Jackie Burns
Northern Ireland goalkeeper on BBC iPlayer

Northern Ireland have done well, they've learnt from the first corner and dealt with the first ball, first phase and got it away.

It's just that second phase, we can't switch off and we need to keep an eye on the edge of the box, but fair play, what a great strike.

    Lucy Quinn (30 mins)

The Republic of Ireland finally break the deadlock through Lucy Quinn's deflected strike and the Aviva erupts!

From the first corner, Quinn swings the ball to Caitlin Hayes at the back-post, and her bullet header is pushed behind by Shannon Turner.

Katie McCabe then takes the second corner, which is only half-cleared by Northern Ireland and Quinn's low strike from the edge of the box deflects off Rachel Furness and flies into the bottom corner.

A blow for Northern Ireland, who had been frustrating the Republic.
