  1. Teenage record-breaker to Premier League starpublished at 09:12 British Summer Time 22 September 2023

The football world first heard about Martin Odegaard when he was just 15 and starting to cause a stir in his native Norway with Stromsgodset.

Odegaard became the youngest player to feature in the Norwegian top flight, aged 15 years and 118 days, and he broke the record for the youngest goalscorer in the league just 33 days later.

It wasn't long until Europe's elite started to take notice and Real Madrid paid a reported £2.3m to sign 16-year-old Odegaard in January 2015.

He struggled to settle at the Bernabeu and spent time on-loan at Heerenveen, Vitesse and Real Sociedad before first linking up with Arsenal in 2021.

The midfielder made just 11 appearances for Real Madrid prior to agreeing a permanent switch to the Gunners.

Odegaard played a key role in helping Arsenal to finish second last term and was named player of the season.

  2. Arteta a huge admirer of Odegaardpublished at 09:06 British Summer Time 22 September 2023

Martin Odegaard joined Arsenal on loan from Real Madrid in January 2021, making 14 Premier League appearances in the second half of the season.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta liked what he saw from the creative midfielder and convinced the board to pay a fee of about £30m in the summer of 2021.

The Norway international has become a mainstay at the Emirates, featuring 73 times in the league over the past two seasons. He was named captain before the 2022-23 campaign.

"He is our captain and a hugely respected person at our club, who is a great role model and professional, bringing quality and maturity in everything he does," said Arteta. "On the pitch, as everyone has seen, Martin is a young player of top quality who consistently contributes at a such a high level.

"As a manager, working with Martin the person and the player is an absolute joy, and it’s great that after experiencing a number of clubs already in his career, he is now settled and really feels at home at Arsenal."

Now I'm afraid we have some sad news to mention, with Sheffield United midfielder Maddy Cusack having died at the age of 27.

Cusack had been at the club since 2019 and became the first player to reach 100 appearances for the women's team last season. She also worked as a marketing executive at the Women's Championship club, who said they were "devastated".

"This is heartbreaking news for everyone at Bramall Lane," said Sheffield United chief executive officer Stephen Bettis. "Maddy had a unique position of being part of a number of teams at Sheffield United and was popular with everyone that she came into contact with.

"Her personality and professionalism made her a credit to her family - she will be sadly missed.

"Whilst taking in the news and moving forward, the club will offer as much support as possible to Maddy's family, friends and colleagues."

England host Scotland at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland later in the inaugural game of the Uefa Women's Nations League for both of the home nations.

For the Lionesses, it is their first game since the Women's World Cup final, when they suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain at Stadium Australia in Sydney.

Scotland, meanwhile, are aiming to upset their neighbours in their own backyard - and there is more than just local pride at stake.

The results from the Nations League will be used to determine the European competitors in the women's football event at the 2024 Olympics. If England win their group then reach the final, then Team GB qualify for the Paris Games. Weirdly, if Scotland win the group then GB won't qualify.
