At the end of the day we are European champions and World Cup finalists, a top team.

In a couple of months time we will come into the next camp with players who have played a lot more domestic football and competitive matches.

At the end of the game you saw players hunched over, and rubbing their heads, they are tired, which is why we say use the squad a little bit more.

Come October they will be more into a rhythm, more game under their belt. As a nation we should be beating Belgium next up, and we need to.

Yes it is a scenario where England are trying to qualify Team GB for the Olympics, but these are the situations you want to see new players be given their chance.

The likes of Esme Morgan at centre half, Maya le Tissier, or perhaps Jess Park. Even Ebony Salmon, can some of these players come on and give the side something else?

You want players to be able to come into the squad and experience situations like the first half, where it wasn't going so well, to see if they have it in them to also work out how to solve issues.

We need people to come into those situations and make a difference, like Chloe Kelly did when she came on.

  4. NI win but England and Wales losepublished at 21:27 British Summer Time 26 September 2023

It's been a mixed bag for the home nations tonight.

England though have lost thanks to a late Netherland's winner and Wales were hammered 5-1 by Denmark.

But Northern Ireland earned a 1-0 victory against Albania.

  5. 'Overriding issue was giving the ball away too easily'published at 21:25 British Summer Time 26 September 2023

    FT: Netherlands 2-1 England

    Former England midfielder on ITV4

I think Sarina Wiegman will look at these two games against Scotland and the Netherlands and know that they did not tear us apart, they had spells but it was more that England gave the ball away in silly areas.

As Sarina is a possession-based coach, she will say that it came from our mistakes. But, I also think we have to use our squad more, adapt a little more to opponents. Freshness seemed to be a real issue in these games.

Sarina will look at England first and the mistakes but then I think she will have to go away and look a bit deeper.

  7. 'Elite goalscoring from Russo'published at 21:18 British Summer Time 26 September 2023

    FT: Netherlands 2-1 England

    Ian Wright
    Former England striker on ITV4

For the equaliser from Russo the finish was harder than she made it look, simply because of the deflection that was on the pass into her.

The ball comes into the box behind her, and normally when that happens you are leaning back, and as a result the ball goes high.

Alessia manages to just guide it into the corner. She doesn't take a wild slash at it but guides it back to where it's coming from. That is elite goalscoring.

  8. 'We gifted them two goals'published at 21:15 British Summer Time 26 September 2023

    FT: Netherlands 2-1 England

    England

England's Millie Bright, speaking to ITV4: "It's hard because there were some really good parts of the game where we really dominated. I thought they were ruthless when they had their opportunities and to be honest we gifted them two goals.

"When you concede in that manner, that's the most disappointing thing especially when games like this really matter.

"There is still a lot to play for. We have to rest, recover, go again and reflect because the games get harder and harder. We have to get better as a team, evolve and develop.

"Second-half we came out as a different team and put the passes together better. There were really good parts.

"But as I said, if you give away two goals like that, it makes it really hard. They had less chances but were really, really clinical. We were not ruthless enough in that area."

  9. 'Overall Dutch deserved to pinch a late winner'published at 21:12 British Summer Time 26 September 2023

The Netherlands knew what England's weakness was going to be.

They kept us under pressure and got enough bodies around the ball that they forced one of our best technicians, Alex Greenwood, into a mistake.

Whether that was from fatigue or tiredness I don't know, but it came from our mistake.

Given the chances England had in the second half they could have taken something from the game. But maybe overall the Dutch deserved to pinch that late winner.

  10. 'Fair result in the end'published at 21:09 British Summer Time 26 September 2023

I think in the end it was a fair result, the Netherlands deserved to win it.

They had more intensity in their attacking play, those slip balls into the channels always looked a threat throughout the game.

England were better in the second half, more direct. Chloe Kelly had an impact when she came on.

But a great goal from Jansen wins the game.
