    Newcastle United

A final word from Eddie Howe on full-back Kieran Trippier, who laid on three of Newcastle's goals in Sunday's 8-0 win at Sheffield United: "He's technically so good Kieran. His use of the ball is second to none and when you are under pressure to find a pass and find a way out, he finds a way.

"It goes without saying, his set-piece delivery is brilliant and has been for a number of years.

"He's been so good for us off the pitch as well - with his leadership skills and experience and how he helps the team drive forward and be successful. He has been an incredible player for us."

More from Eddie Howe on in-form midfielder Anthony Gordon: "He is someone who wants to train and wants to play every day. We will monitor his load and with a lot of players we will pick and choose.

"I chose the Sheffield United game to try and give him a rest. That didn't work out because Harvey [Barnes] picked up his injury."

  4. 'I will use the squad'published at 10:21 British Summer Time 26 September 2023

Newcastle v Man City (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on player selection: "I think we will use the squad. I need to assess everybody physically first. There have been a couple of players who are carrying things and we do have players who are keen to show what they can do and I have to use the squad.

"We want the players to enter the pitch in the best physical condition and that will be no different on Wednesday."

More from Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on facing Manchester City in the EFL Cup third round: "There is not one tournament that is more important than the other. I have told the players that. Our most important game is the next game and that is what we will do. We will focus our energies on that game and getting the best result we can.

"It's the draw that no-one wants because for me they are the best club team in the world and have been for some time. The test is there for us and we also want to attack it and show that we have strength in depth and compete on all fronts. This is the ideal place to show that.

"The spirit is high but I think nothing can replicate scoring goals. The rhythm was good at the weekend and different goalscorers as well. Long may that continue."

  6. 'The ultimate test'published at 10:10 British Summer Time 26 September 2023

Newcastle v Man City (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on facing Manchester City as he bids to steer last season's finalists on another good run in the EFL Cup: "It is an important competition for us. Last year was amazing for us and we started in against Tranmere which was an incredibly difficult game. You have to go to some tough places in the early rounds and we have the ultimate test this time round.

"We want to compete in every competition."

  7. Gordon's adding goals and product - Howepublished at 10:05 British Summer Time 26 September 2023

Newcastle v Man City (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe, speaking about winger Anthony Gordon: "I think he has had an outstanding start to the season. I think his athleticism is coming to the fore but he is adding goals and product.

"He had an assist and a goal on Saturday, which is great to see, and all attacking players will be ultimately judged by that.

"I always say when we sign players there needs to be patience. As much as you want them to be in and be outstanding immediately, that's rare.

"I always knew Anthony's quality and I think the pre-season has been really good and as were the six months he had with us before the summer."

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe speaking at his press conference ahead of Wednesday's Carabao Clash with Manchester City about Harvey Barnes' injury: "I think it is an injury to his part of the foot below the toe. I think it is a substantial injury. We have had it scanned and we are waiting for a specialist to say whether it needs surgery or not.

"I think it was just [from] pushing off to run. A very unusual injury.

"We have got a couple [of other injuries] in there. Naturally, from the three games and such a physical effort is something we have got to get used to, but we have a few in there."

Newcastle fans gearing up to host Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, may well remember a meeting between the two sides in the competition nine years ago.

Goals from Rolando Aarons and Moussa Sissoko helped Newcastle to an unlikely away victory at the Etihad Stadium against then-holders City.

The Geordie faithful will hope for a repeat of that when Pep Guardiola's side visit a buoyant St. James' Park on the back of Newcastle's 8-0 win at Sheffield United on Sunday.

A number of Premier League clubs will be holding news conferences today to preview Wednesday's EFL Cup ties.

We will shortly be hearing from Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe.

Newcastle, of course, were defeated 2-0 by Manchester United in the final of last season's Carabao Cup, their first appearance in a major final since 1999.

Goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford broke the hearts of the Geordies and they were rewarded for their exploits by being drawn against treble-winners Manchester City in the third round this term.

We will be hearing from Pep Guardiola later today. His side defeated the Magpies 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium in August but their last trip to Tyneside was the enthralling 3-3 draw in the Premier League last season.

Could Newcastle and City be about to serve up another classic?

  13. 'That company destroyed us' - a derby 18 years in the makingpublished at 09:36 British Summer Time 26 September 2023

When Red Bull approached Austria Salzburg about a plan to help in 2005, there was an expectation they would be major sponsors, aiding them through their financial troubles.

However, as talks progressed, it became clear Red Bull did not just want to sponsor them, they wanted overall change - from colours, to crest, to name - and that infuriated the club's fans.

"That company had just destroyed a huge part of our lives," board member Stefan Schubert explains.

A large portion of the supporters formed their own phoenix club a year later, keeping the original name and history, even maintaining that they were formed in 1933, when Austria Salzburg was formed.

On Tuesday, Austria Salzburg will play Red Bull Salzburg in the OFB Cup. It will be the first meeting between the two sides.

Former Scotland and Everton striker Duncan Ferguson will be the new Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager.

The 51-year-old left Forest Green Rovers in July following just one win in 18 games in charge, after which they were relegated from League One.

Forest Green had been Ferguson's first foray into management on his own.

Ferguson's appointment will be announced at a Tuesday morning media conference as he takes over from the sacked Billy Dodds.

Caley Thistle sit bottom of the Scottish Championship with one point from six games.

When Phil Jones was actually fit and had played a run of games, I thought he was at his best when he was acting on instinct.

When he was defending and he knew what he had to do and he only had one option, he just went for it. He made the tackle, made the block and I thought he was brilliant when he did that.

His problem was when he had a second to think about what he was about to do - because he'd change his mind and make the wrong decision.

It's the same with Marcus Rashford on the offensive side. If he makes his mind up as soon as he gets the ball, he's electric and not many people can stop him, no matter what he wants to do.

He's a great passer of the ball but we haven't seen it in a while because at the moment he's got back in the mentality of not exactly knowing what he wants to do with the ball when he gets it.

More often than not, especially when he's linking up with Hojlund - or the lack of linking up with Hojlund - he's making the wrong decision again.

The winners of the 2023 Carabao Cup, Manchester United, are playing their first match as holders this evening, hosting Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

For Erik ten Hag's team, Harry Maguire and Mason Mount were back in training this week and could be in line to play against the Eagles.

Raphael Varane was also back involved last week prior to their Champions League clash against Bayern Munch, while new loan signing Sofyan Amrabat made his United debut off the bench at Burnley on Saturday.

Palace, on the other hand, are plagued by injuries at present and come into the match at Old Trafford with little room for rotation.

Ajax's match against FC Volendam, scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed.

In a statement, Ajax said they disagree with the decision to finish the game on Wednesday on fixture congestion grounds and are considering legal action.

  18. Sheff Utd's 8-0 defeat 'just one of those games'published at 08:54 British Summer Time 26 September 2023

    Rory Smith
Chief Soccer Correspondent for The New York Times

I think it does feel of the three of them that Burnley might have something growing that in November and December it comes to fruition. I do worry that they have gone very young with their signings.

I do wonder that Sheffield United was just one of those games. It's not really reflective of what they've been like this season. They have lost games but there has never been a sense that they would get thrashed at Bramall Lane. They have been competitive but they have left their transfer business until very late which is a risk for a newly-promoted team.

Listen to BBC's Monday Night Club.

  19. Postpublished at 08:50 British Summer Time 26 September 2023

The conversation continued on the Monday Night Club about the respective chances each of the three promoted sides - Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United - have of staying up.

All three have just one point, with Sheffield United having played six games and Burnley and Luton five.

The panel discussed Sheffield United's 8-0 defeat to Newcastle, with Rory Smith, of the New York Times, suggesting that it was not indicative of their form this season and could have been "one of those games".
