  1. Sutton's Predictionpublished at 18:56 British Summer Time 3 October 2023

    Luton v Burnley (19:30 BST)

    Sutton's Predictions

I feel like most people are expecting this game to end up in a draw, but I am going to go for a Burnley win, which would be their first of the season.

My reasoning behind that prediction is that the Clarets have had a tough start in terms of fixtures, starting with Manchester City on the opening weekend as well as playing Tottenham, Newcastle and Aston Villa - they've played Manchester United too, although I'm not sure that qualifies as being 'tough' at the moment.

This is a massive game for both clubs, so I don't think Burnley need or want the win any more than Luton do, it's more that I think they have a little bit more quality in their team than the Hatters do.

I watched Burnley's draw at Nottingham Forest a couple of weeks ago and thought they were a little bit unlucky not to win the game, but this might be the time where they do find a way of getting the three points.

I think it will be close, and if Luton do manage to get back-to-back wins after beating Everton on Saturday, it would be absolutely phenomenal for them and give them real belief that they can stay in the Premier League.

But I just have a sneaky feeling Burnley will edge it. Also, I have a Luton player, Hatters defender Amari'i Bell, in my Fantasy team so this way I get something out of this game whatever happens.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-2

  2. Can Premier League new boys defy the odds?published at 18:50 British Summer Time 3 October 2023

    Played 19, won one.

Luton's historic win at Everton on Saturday was not only their first-ever Premier League victory, it was the first three points for any of the newly promoted teams this season.

Before this campaign, the worst combined points total for the three new top-flight sides after six games each was nine in 2004-05. Two of those three sides - Crystal Palace and Norwich - were relegated.

Between them, Luton, Sheffield United and Burnley have picked up just six points so far. That is with the Blades having played seven matches: they and the Clarets have gained a single point each.

Luton and Burnley meet at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday, a match postponed from August while building work was completed.

And, while the Hatters will be full of confidence after four points from their past two games, things look gloomy for the other two in the battle for survival.

No newly promoted club has ever had fewer than three points after seven Premier League games and managed to avoid the drop.

It is a cliche but you feel that the key to their survival is the form that they can produce here at Kenilworth Road.

It has been well-publicised, it's such a unique Premier League ground with all of its wonderful quirks, it's terraced housing, its stands of various shaped and sizes, 10,000 capacity but when it gets going it's as loud as any of them so if Luton can harness that, as well as play like they did against Everton they'll give themselves a fighting chance.

  7. 'We have to take our moments'published at 18:41 British Summer Time 3 October 2023

    Luton v Burnley (19:30 BST)

Burnley ran away with the Championship last year.

But they are still waiting for a first win this season.

On Saturday, while Luton were securing their own first three points, the Clarets went down 2-0 at Newcastle to leave them with just one point from their first six games.

They arrived back in the top-flight with a lauded new style of progressive attacking play under Vincent Kompany - one that proved too much for most in the second tier. That gap to the Premier League is an almighty one, though, and so far Burnley have found it too big a one to successfully bridge, barring a solitary draw at Nottingham Forest.

After the loss at St James' Park, Kompany said it was all about his side "taking their moments"...

Manager Rob Edwards was understandably delighted after Saturday's win. Although, he did also claim he had a feeling it would happen.

"I'm just very, very proud of the players and pleased for the club," he said.

"I know it's a big moment, I get that. I don't want this to come across in any kind of arrogant way but I expected us to [win] today, I really did. I told the boys before the game, 'I know this is going to be a good day'.

"We really believed we could come here and win the game. We had a really good plan."

Former Chelsea and Everton manager Frank Lampard is in the running to fill the vacancy at Scottish Premiership side Rangers.

Lampard has been without a club since leaving his interim role at Stamford Bridge in the summer, when be replace the sacked Graham Potter.

BBC Sport understands the ex-England midfielder would be interested in talks with the Glasgow giants.

  10. PGMOL statement on VAR (part 2)published at 18:33 British Summer Time 3 October 2023

PGMOL are committed to enhancing VAR performance through a new training programme which started this season and focuses on process and best practice for all VARs, AVARs and Replay Operators in their specific roles. While we have a number of FIFA-recognised VARs, work is ongoing to create a dedicated pool of VAR specialists.

The VAR and AVAR in question were removed from their remaining fixtures in Match Round 7 in the Premier League and have not been included in the appointments for Match Round 8 this weekend.

PGMOL and The FA have also agreed to review the policy to allow match officials to officiate matches outside of FIFA or UEFA appointments.

  11. PGMOL statement on VAR (part 1)published at 18:33 British Summer Time 3 October 2023

PGMOL can confirm that we have carried out a review into the circumstances which led to the Luis Diaz goal being incorrectly disallowed for offside in the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur FC and Liverpool FC.

We recognise standards fell short of expectations and acknowledged the error to Liverpool immediately after the conclusion of the fixture.

A detailed report, including the key learnings and immediate actions taken, alongside the audio between the on-field officials and VAR team has been submitted to the Premier League, who have shared it with Liverpool FC and subsequently all other Premier League clubs.

The review of the on-field and VAR decision-making processes and application of the decision-making principles has identified the following key learnings to mitigate against the risk of a future error:

    • Guidance to Video Match Officials has always emphasised the need for efficiency, but never at the expense of accuracy. This principle will be clearly reiterated

    • A new VAR Communication Protocol will be developed to enhance the clarity of communication between the referee and the VAR team in relation to on-field decisions

    • As an additional step to the process, the VAR will confirm the outcome of the VAR check process with the AVAR before confirming the final decision to the on-field officials

Before Saturday, Luton had one point from five games - that coming from a 1-1 draw with Wolves. It's not the kind of return that emboldens a club to believe they will defy the odds and avoid relegation from a Premier League that many have snootily suggested was above them.

It's funny, though, what a trip to a fellow struggler and a subsequent away win can do for spirits.

At the weekend, the Hatters showed up at Everton's Goodison Park and left with three points courtesy of 2-1 victory - their first in the Premier League and one that gives them an almighty boost whilst increasing the angst eating away at the Toffees.

  17. The runt of the litterpublished at 18:14 British Summer Time 3 October 2023

We're under no false pretences this evening.

With the Champions League taking top billing, a rearranged match between two sides who not that long ago were both playing their trade in the Championship and this season have five points between them from a possible 36 is a tough sell.

But let's not be defeatist right off the bat. Let's fight our corner, we hardy few who either support Luton, Burnley or don't have TNT.

We might be the runt of tonight's football litter, but that doesn't mean we can't punch way above our weight.
